Immigration deports Alexey Karetnikov: Microsoft engineer, alleged Russian spy, loyal Facebook user
The curious case of the Russian spies grows, well, curiouser, as the Washington Post reports that a Microsoft Software Design Engineer named Alexey Karetnikov has recently been ordered out of the country for "immigration violations." According to a government source, Karetnikov had "just set up shop," (spy shop, that is) and the immigration charges were technicalities used to get him out of the country quickly (and without an annoying trial). We just hope that Alexey followed our advice for managing Facebook privacy settings -- it would be terribly ironic if he was exposed to the world through his naive use of the social networking sites.

That European mens purse (shoulder bag) gave him away:)
I'm starting to think that all this Russian spy business is just a clever viral campaign for that Angelina Jolie movie SALT (In theaters July 23rd).
Yeah man...what's there to spy on. Get satalite picture via google....search anything on google and it comes up. Hell might as well send google back to Russia.
I seriously wonder what's left to spy on. The only secrets are corporate/financial.
There's no trial? What the hell?! So we can kick any one out now? how about Steve jobs, he needs to go see that Swedish scientist who knew the antenna was dumb.
Hopefully this doesn't escalate to anywhere cold war levels of paranoia with Russia. This is ridiculous.
orange is nice
stand like gangstah
Engadget is losing focus more and more these days... sigh.
@substance90 No, we're not. We're just hitting more news. We post about double what we were posting last year. The same amount of hard news, SSDs, cellphones, you name it. But we're also writing 500% more reviews, features, and then there's Alt. But, you're always free to like, not read everything -- though I encourage you to repeatedly read this headline, if only for the laughs.
@substance90
What would you expect? Engadget is a blog, not a respected news source.v
@whiskers Or better you, have both the + and - be like 10 +'s. If 2 people press either button, you're like automatically highest ranked.
scary! i will keep an eye out from now on at work......hmmmmmm..........(work in tech business)
we do have all these foreign employeess at Norto.........
Anyone wearing a hideous orange sweater like that deserves to get deported.
I'm more concerned about how he was an employee at Microsoft if he was here illegally. Just another example of how Microsoft refuses to hire Americans at American wages.
@mcross67 He was NOT in the country illegally. They simply "found" some immigration "problems" to resolve the spy issue... Didn't you read that part?
@ryn456 What don't you understand? Unlike Steve Jobs this guy was not an American citizen.
I'd vote to kick you out instead, I hear Somalia is good this time of year.
@andrewh12 It was just a joke, i understand why he was kicked out but it still seems like there should have been more investigation on the "spy" accusation, kicking him out i understand but calling him a spy W/O a trial isnt quite right.
@ryn456 There probably was a lot of investigation done prior to deciding to deport him.
It's more than likely they simply didn't want to tell the courts about how and what they found.
He ought to be deported just for that sweater alone.
I wonder if Mr. Karetnikov plans on getting a good deportation defence attorney.
er, make that defense.
Glad to hear Moose and Squirrel live to see another day.
And in other news.....A 12 inch screen running a new secret version of Microsoft Tabletta, a Windows Desktop version 9.2 and a series of Windows Mobile devices have appeared all over Moscow.
WOLVERINES!!!!!!!!
I always thought those Microsofties were commies. Promotion of a mono-culture, denial of security issues, inability to handle criticism, intolerant of competition, seeds the competition with spies and infiltrators, corrupt to the core, devoid of morals or ethics, resorts to threats, bullying and underhand tactics. Only the powerful few at the very top ever really benefit.
