Chile becomes first country to guarantee net neutrality, we start thinking about moving
Net neutrality: you want it, we want it, ISPs pretty much hate it. Chilean politicians? Those guys love the stuff! The Board of the Chamber of Deputies voted almost unanimously to pass Bulletin 4915 which, among other things, forces an ISP to:
There are other provisions as well forcing ISPs to protect user's privacy and the integrity of their systems, but it's the network neutrality bit we're really digging here. However, the cynics among us are wondering how long until ISPs start claiming that bandwidth-hogging sites pose a risk to user's systems. We're sure they just don't want your tubes to get backed up....ensure access to all types of content, services or applications available on the network and offer a service that does not distinguish content, applications or services, based on the source of it or their property.

"we start thinking about moving"... Please. Don't. The only thing I want is to leave this place....
This is a little bit premature, the bill still hasn't been signed into law.
Is anyone aware that "net neutrality" in the U.S. gives the FCC power in on the internet? Law suits are working fine right now, so why do we need the FCC to step in. This is just going to set a president with the government to have power on the internet in general. As the old saying goes, give an inch and take a mile.
I say keep it in the civil courts, because once the government bureaucracy gets hold of it, it will mark the start of the end of the 100% free internet. It happened to the newspapers, and the radio... don't let it happen to the internet.

Aww reality :)
Thank God I live in Chile..... VIVA CHILE MIERDA
Good job, Chile.
Chile has always been more receptive of authoritarian government controls than America for most of it's history. Though at this point I fear we are just as bad as them, and look for "net neutrality" as well as complete government regulation of all aspects of the internet, including content, here in the US shortly unless something drastic changes. The only real hope we have is if the Federal Government collapses, which at the rate things are going isn't as far fetched as it seemed a few years ago.
Watch yourself, Engadget. Most of your commenters are not smart enough to detect the humor in the headline.
I live in Norway.... we have a socialist system/ welfare system. So in this evil country we have full health insurance (including when we travel abroad), secure pension, 5 week vacation (i have 6) , 1 year maternity leave paid, ultra high broadband and the hottest girls in the world...
The minimum wage is around 29000 kroner per month the highest 10% of the population makes 62.000 kroner on average.
You must wonder how we did all this being socialist evil people, the answer taxes.
So those fundamentalists that love free market and low taxes must living a lot better than me right?
Regards,
An inmigrant from Norway.
Would net neutrality also cover cell networks? Like would it be illegal to say you could surf the Internet on a smart-phone but not use video chat? (not trying to be a jerk, just interested)
Where is the line then, can a network provider say "voice is a core service" or "email is a core service" and that we will always dedicate bandwidth to these services, but not to you connecting to other clients.
Is it a "everything on port 80 should be even" kind of thing?
@patoduck
Huh?... Are you actually on here promoting how great taxes are?
I don't think your gonna find anyone who is going to agree with you on that one. You sir have been brain washed.
Your like one of those people who call "crazy Kim" "Dear Leader".
FYI, I'm an American. I net around 20k per year. Which is below the average...and I make twice as much money then your top 10%. What does that tell you? Your country also has a higher cost of living...
Those 2 things alone clearly paint a different picture then your rant.
And that is why you all europeans are going dooooown. Just watch yojr economy numbers mate, your free stuff wont last too long.
@murc He said 29,000 Kroner per MONTH which is 348,000 Kroner per YEAR or in US currency $55,520 Per year.
The lowest earning Norwegian makes more than twice your income. The truth hurts.
HOW DO I GET CITIZENSHIP IN THIS COUNTRY??
too*
Not nearly enough caffeine in my bloodstream right now. I swear I just read China becomes first country to guarantee net neutrality...and went O_o
