HP Android tablet coming later than you think, or not at all
Although nothing official has come from HP on this front, we got some pretty solid word back in April that the American giant was mulling an Android tablet. As it turns out, what with the WebOS acquisition that followed and HP's dogged commitment to Windows 7, that Googly project has apparently slipped out of the limelight in HP HQ. Word from All Things Digital is that there'll be nothing forthcoming this year (as was tentatively expected) and if an HP Android tablet is to materialize, it'll have to come in 2011. The company seems to be in the midst of reallocating resources to its higher priority projects, and who knows, should that rumored Hurricane tablet blow us all away, Android might never gets its chance to shine at all.

just take your pick hp: win7, android or webos
pick one, stick with it and bloody release something already!
@mrqs so so true. HP needs to experience a committed relationship!
@mrqs HPQ already blew it and picked webOS for $1.2 BILLION.
Now we get to watch that mistake implode.
Or, more likely, fade away.
@mrqs Nah, HP knows they have to have a winner. The iPad has an effective lock on the tablet market. If HP wants in, they need to tread lightly. Triple A products don't just appear out of thin air.
@mrqs
Who cares about HP tablet now? By the time they decide whether to make one or not, they were be plenty (Win7 or Android) in the market for us to choose from.
@Pork
actually it seems to me that it's all announcements and show-offs at this point from all the companies - there still isn't one decent tablet out there and i'm not exactly holding my breath here either
@mrqs
Can we stop with the Mobile OS Tablets please? We are moving one step back! Instead, we should focus on fitting a processor into a tablet that lets a full-blown OS work in a fluid manner on one of these damned things!
@Pork
I do
@krishansy
the problem is lack of processor speed. It's that the tiny little red X in the top right corner of your window simply wasn't designed for your finger.
@TomSawyer
problem is *not lack of processor speed
WHOA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I thought HP bought Palm. So what's this Android crap.
WHERE'S MY WEBOS!
.
@Bakerdk
I have an android phone but have zero interest in an android tablet. I think it's great for phones, but that's it. I'd rather see webOS on this.
@mrqs
I have no interest in an iPad, but the irrational desire stirred within be to purchase a tablet is gone. Sorry HP/Notion Ink/ICD... you lost me.
@Freakin Ijit
Can we watch your stupidity fade away?
I think the largest computer manufacturer in the world knows what company to buy and how to use its assets
@krishansy well touch screen and full OS dont exactly go together.
It's nice to see HP is realizing it's not an enviable business position to be a hardware manufacturing shlub where you have no control over the platform itself. Bleeding yourself dry building razor-thin-margin products while the software maker (Microsoft, Google) makes all the money. No thanks.
I like your new vertical integration direction, HP. Smart move for you, and better products for everyone else.
@EpicBlob
But can they focus towards making one? I know Win 8 is supposed to be very touch-friendly and all. But can they come up with some tweak to Win 7 for tablet PCs? Can something similar be done to OSX?
@DefPoet Compaq.
@ImSpartacus Still trying to figure out what to call the iOS/Android/WebOS big screen devices.....We already have Tablet computers and none of those fall into that category.
They are closer to Portable Media Devices than Tablets IMO
@InnocentEd
They are actually called MID as in Mobile Internet Device. I think that name fits more than a tablet because I always associate tablet with Windows x86(_64).
And a MID isn't supposed to be that powerful or run on that Frankenstein they call x86(_64) CPU.
I understood from the beginning that HP wants to offer two tablets, one that would compete w/ the iPad and the other which is an actual computer:
1) HP Slate: A larger tablet based on netbook design running a true full multitouch operating system ala Windows7, but in slate form factor.
2) HP Hurricane: A smaller tablet based on cellphone design running a minimalist WebOS operating system, but in a larger slate form factor like the Dell Streak.
HP was not first to the tablet scene nor were they first to come out with a netbook, but their TM2 and TM2T and Mini series have done well.
@mrqs
I personaly don't like "Half OSes". I am waiting for a Tablet with a Full OS at a reasonable price LONG TIME NOW !!! But I wonder WHY ??? Why they cancer all the freaking cool tablets all the time ? Asus Hp or what ever they keep promising and never release a "Normal Tablet". WTF industry people ? Are you just playing with us ? D@mn I am so pissed off now...
P.S. Sorry for my bad grammar if any..
@krishansy
Because Microsoft's full Windows OS tablets sold so many over the past ten years.
By the way, what is the difference between a "full" os and a "mobile" os?
@iBurger
Then go buy one. Newegg has plenty of Windows tablets, the convertible laptop kind. Those have a very small market. Mobile tablets may eventually be found in every house, even replacing full computers for some people.
Sigh.
+1
In other news Apple’s tablet is selling like hot cakes while the Android Google teenage competition can’t even put one damn thing out there.
Must be hard being a Google drones, indeed. At least I have a survey proving how satisfied the teens are about their HTC plastic toys… oh wait, they’re not really satisfied.
I have an iPad, and it's people like you that give I device owners a bad name.
Go back under your bridge.

@magadget
If anyone ever wondered why there are Apple "haters" this is it.
@JamesR So you think only the google drones can bash Apple here freely? You’re mistaken. Big, big time. It’s free for ALL. Not only for something you like.
@JamesR
Wrong. There's Apple haters because people are insecure douches, who need to find a reason to believed their handset is better than Apples, despite the overwhelming evidence that it isn't.
@magadget
Except of course he's right....
To date not a single android tablet has been released. Nor has there been any Windows 7 tablet released.
More importantly even IF one were to be released would it have the same success financially in the market like the iPad?
Of course we all know the answer is a NO. Continue to hate. It just shows how desperate you are to be on Apple's level.
@JamesR
i've never seen so much unabashed hatred pointed towards apple as has been spewing lately over the iphone antennae. Problem is, none of these haters a)own the iphone, or b) would ever buy it in the first place. They're simply basking in the sun of an (overblown) apple miscue. Definition of a troll.
Rest assured, this will not be their fall from grace that you trolls so desperately pray for.
@magadget
This comment thread is collapsing like a Guatemalan sinkhole.
@BrookLynnsFinest
Hey BrookLynn. I hope your mother dies in a fire.
That I cause.
@BrookLynnsFinest
actually there are a few. Archos just to name prolly the most popular.
@BrookLynnsFinest We have yet to see whether the iPad is an actual success....even selling as many as it has.
For the most part when it comes to mobile devices the iPad is still a slow seller and hard to market for as the user base for that device is so concentrated that it doesn't make sense for a lot of people.
Selling 3 million in about 3 months isn't anything when the iPhone 4 sells almost 2 million in 3 days and Android activates almost 200,000 devices a day
@magadget
Has anyone noticed that the CEO of Google was on the Apple board of directors. As Google CEO, he was getting paid a very low salary. So who does he really work for?
Is Android an Apple plot to destroy WebOS, Windows Mobile, etc, and leave Apple's only competition something that Steve secretly controls, and is exactly the opposite of iOS, so it makes iOS look good by comparison. (It's very easy to get malware in the Android Market.)
@techee44
What a prick! What are you, 8 years old? You should be ashamed of yourself.
:(
Erm, call me a grumpy fart, but are we ever going to see some decent alternatives to the iPad running Android/Windows 7? Every time something that interests me is mentioned its always "coming soon" or "release date not announced" and usually "prices not available" as well.
I think all i've seen so far are cheap chinese models that look like something that belongs in a primary school.
Good thing. Go all out on WebOS tablets instead.
WAIT WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA????????????
I'm sick of all these HP Tablet rumors, until I can walk into a store and buy one I will never believe any of these stories.
And really for any of these non iPad tablets to work don't they need an an iTunes equivalent service to help you manage everything?
@malexandria1
A well done tablet should be able to manage everything on the device. Tether to iTunes is a weakness not a strength IMHO.
@malexandria1
no.
@JamesR i wouldn't call it a weakness. just another concept. i think its quite useful but it would be great if it worked wirelessly.
@malexandria1 Not really iTunes is a weakness if anything especially the windows version. The sync really only copies media back and forth which is simple for any developer to setup and then stores each apps preferences, data, settings.. again simple.
If someone wants to make a feature of it they should sync to the cloud without the user even knowing. The user then potentially doesn't even need a PC to keep copies of their media library on.
