HP Android tablet coming later than you think, or not at all
Although nothing official has come from HP on this front, we got some pretty solid word back in April that the American giant was mulling an Android tablet. As it turns out, what with the WebOS acquisition that followed and HP's dogged commitment to Windows 7, that Googly project has apparently slipped out of the limelight in HP HQ. Word from All Things Digital is that there'll be nothing forthcoming this year (as was tentatively expected) and if an HP Android tablet is to materialize, it'll have to come in 2011. The company seems to be in the midst of reallocating resources to its higher priority projects, and who knows, should that rumored Hurricane tablet blow us all away, Android might never gets its chance to shine at all.

That's the problem, WebOS, isn't ready to compete with the ipad because there aren't enough good first party apps. You can't just whip up a version of pages for a tablet. That's why Apple is basically going to win this round for awhile. I would be surprised to see worthwhile tablets take shape by the end of this year honestly. Chances are good we'll start to see android tablets competing with the 2nd version of the ipad.
@nickyP Apple definitely has a head start, because they've approached this pretty much in exactly the same way as the Mac. Their OS also uses technology (Cocoa and OSX), that they've been using for decades.
That means they can leverage a lot of their development and apps from the Mac and even just copy a lot of the code. Google's services have been platform-agnostic since the beginning, so they can leverage Gmail, etc. (but not exclusive to Android).
HP have none of that (printer support? Idk). Palm have some older IP, but none of their technology can be directly used in webOS.
Meego tablets with Intel chips will be the future. Real open-source, indepentent from google or apple. I think it's worth waiting for.
@mahmut The future is not open-source or independent.
Sorry, but I've owned Apple and HP laptops and i know whats going to take a bit more of a beating. iPad is everything a tablet should be, well priced, huge battery life, light weight. Put any atom or laptop sized ram, HDD and you lose all of those.
Learn from apple, HP, use a souped up phone processor, RAM and run a modified mobile OS.
@Shanebenn
Low internal storage, no 3G on the base model, no Flash, no camera, no removable storage, propitiatory USB, no multi-tasking until the Fall, no standard video out, no wireless syncing, no dedicated folder system, and an archaic 4:3 aspect ratio.
If all that sounds like "everything a tablet should be", you're very much in the minority among the tech conscious consumer base.
@kenny goo But most people don't seem to need all that stuff, right? I can see that the ipad is not for *you* but they're selling like crazy to the point that Apple can't keep up. That tells me the average person doesn't really care about the items in your laundry list. Not that it isn't important to a small segment of the population.
Then it would basically be an ipad. Which sucks! Copying apple is NOT the way to go here.
@greenmonkey
copying Apple, which means selling millions in an unproven category & making boatloads of cash is not the way to go? Are you in some way insinuating they did it wrong? I hope no one depends on you for business decisions!
@Joao Cagao
Anybody with half a brain knows that the iPad is an overpriced and underpowered piece of shit. Just because they managed to sell it off to a bunch of bottom feeders by marketing it well doesn't make it a good product, nor should HP follow in their footsteps simply because of that. Especially when they're guaranteed not to sell as well as the iPad anyway because they don't have that false sense of brand quality that Apple has among uneducated consumers.
@kenny goo OK, now I see you're just a troll. If people buy and enjoy something that you would not buy or enjoy, they're bottom feeders? Really?
Grow the fuck up, dude.
Im gonna say that I think the statement about the HP tablet coming later than expected is false. I think it'll be much sooner than yall think.
@ncpfab1
Did you read the article? They say HP isn't likely to release an Android tablet, not that they won't release a tablet. I doubt they'll release a Windows 7 tablet either (not counting convertible notebooks).
They've said they'll release a WebOS in the third quarter, but if they don't show something within a month, I expect it'll be dropping back to fourth quarter.
webOS is the most suitable OS for a tablet. True multasking + a larger screen should enable users to manipulate more than app at once. Plus there's no doubt that HP is workin on first party apps. I'm excited, I hope they pull it off!
Good news! Now lets get that Windows 7 tablet out so we can have a useful device instead of a media consumption device inbetween my smartphone and laptop nobody ever needed until Apple told them they did.
Dear HP,
Please, please, get the frame for the TC1100 and update to multi-touch. Stick on Windows 7 with NO bloat-ware, plenty of ram and a damn 64Gb crucial SSD as standard. Increase dpi to 125% and I'll be there. Also, follow Motions lead with dual microphones.
The Latitude XT is far to expensive and frail as hell. The Acer 1820ptz is a great machine but cheaply made, so a TC1100 update would be fantastic.
But, it won't happen, as everyone is concentrating in chasing Apple. Forget Apple.
@Excalibur get the HP 2740p. Full Core i7 power and a good keyboard. It's less awkward than the TC1100.
@Jacob1
I own an 1820ptz so I'm currently ok (15 second boot time with the SSD I fitted!). I would, however, love to have a 2740p and waited for it for ages.... the price put me off! HOW MUCH!
:(
The TC1100 is my fav of the 13ish tablets I've owned over the years
HP Stop this ambivalent state and tell us what's cooking from your end! Give us an upgrade to TC1100, will you?!!
webOS is simply the best OS for finger input. A webOS slate will stand on its own.
@JayVe hahaha yes cause your finger is so small you can press all the little buttons.
Anybody really surprised?
I don't care about a tablet, just get a new sexy WebOS enabled phone out now!
this cant be right hp buys webOS and then goes out and pays google to use there software on there tablet. that is just not right.
if they did offer android, they will also offer windows 7 and webOS.
people can pick there fav OS (WebOS is best for HP Slate)
@timmyjan android is free. FYI
@DefPoet may be its free for a reason.
the thing my friend is that people will always pay more for a premium product. i am one of those people i would pay high price for a better quality product.
cost is not an issue here.
it just sounds wrong when a company spends millions on buying new software which is really good and then uses some free software.
y would someone do that.
The way HP is acting I wouldn't be surprised if WebOS didn't make it on their (HP) tablet.
@willielewis2 dont say that i want that tablet.
it would be such a cool device when they make it.
@willielewis2
How is HP acting? This article is pure conjecture on the part of a blogger, and hasn't been news since HP announced acquisition of Palm.
(Blogger: Hey HP, what's going on with the Android tablet. HP: Uh, haven't you heard we bought Palm? We don't expect to be making one. Blogger: Hey, Internet, I've got an excluvise!)
HP and Web OS tablet FTW! I would like Android HP tablet just as much too, though. Both great non conventional OSs (portable, lightweight, great multitasking). Here is hoping they make HP tablets sturdy feeling and visually pleasing. As much a waste as I feel iPad is (already have 64 GB 3rd Gen iTouch running iOS 4 for those wondering) Apple can sure make nice looking stuff that feels sturdy. Will def give them that credit. Love me some HP though :)
WebOS on the hp splate make it work with the camera = win
For all the people saying HP should make a Windows 7 tablet instead, HP already sells a Windows 7 tablet just like they've always sold a Vista and XP tablets. They've been selling Windows tablets for like 10 years now. Now they are looking at adding a new tablet line that runs a mobile OS. What's wrong with expanding and doing that? If you don't like the mobile OS, buy their Windows tablets. It's in their small business section.
@Narutogrey
Maybe we're wanting something with high end netbook speed and a real OS, the size of a screen only?
Can always pair a bluetooth keyboard or chuck a USB keyboard on it if any more serious work needs to be done.
Can't just pull the keyboard off some business convertible tablet though can you?
Don't understand why HP would make an Android tablet (or maybe even a Windows tablet) when they acquired Palm and have WebOS developers on their team now.
HP just got Palm, and they're using Android? That doesn't make very much sense.
Hp please stop rely on buggy not accurate N-trig,
make a multitouch system as performant as apple, and give the OS
choice, there you win.
I'm not surprised that an Android tablet might not be coming, HP did just purchase the webOS so thats the more likely OS we are going to see on future tablets. But they need to just get SOMETHING out. I'm sick of my only option being the iPad(with the exception of foreign models)
WebOS tablet that can print directly to a WebOS printer. iWho?
Whom in the would buy a freaking windows tablet??? the leggiest OS that you could possibly have in a tablet, not to mention that Android OS is made for touch screen devices !!! HP will SUCK big time if they implement Windows or WEB OS in their tablets rather than the always functional and fast Android !!!
@IIsaac Whom in the world
