We didn't have a ton of details on the so-called HTC Ace when it turned up in a leaked roadmap
last week, but a fresh set of rumors are now suggesting that the Ace is actually the Desire HD, which will reportedly pack a number of HD-esque upgrades over the standard
Desire. That includes a larger 4.3-inch
WVGA screen -- no word if it's AMOLED or SLCD -- and an 8-megapixel camera with 720p video recording. Other rumored details include Android 2.2, 4GB of internal storage, the same 1GHz Snapdragon as the current Desire and, perhaps most interestingly, talk of a "unibody aluminum design." Unfortunately, the rumors still don't include any actual images of the device, but there's still plenty of time for those to leak out before the supposed October release.
Could someone explain to me why HTC does not make phones with proper on board memory (16gb or 32gb) and with hardware keyboards. I am waiting and waiting for a HTC with 32gb and keyboard. I would buy it in less than a heart beat.
@etuoyo I think it was called the "HTC Mogul" and they got burned. Too much, too early, too soon.
They'll come around: every Epic 4G sale will be one they will feel could have gone to the EVO. It's the consumer who prospers.
Engadget, you shouldn't embarrass Apple by showing someone holding an HTC phone in his left hand.... your press-conference invitation will be revoked!
I love all the 4.3" screens hitting the market lately. Wish someone will come out with a 5"...other than Dell
@kjones555
HTC has many years ago done a 5" LCD (640x480), the HTC Athena (x7501). Even came built with an 8GB microdrive (not flash).
Can someone tell me why they are obsessed with huge phones with huge screens? 3.7" is the most I can tolerate.
@Maxipad
I think with 1024 x 720 resolutions suggested on high-end Gingerbread phones, 4.3" could be warranted. Plus, as long as the bezel is minimal, the phone shouldn't be much bigger than a 2009 3.7" screen with 2009 bezel size.
Nonetheless, I think Samsung hit the sweet spot with its 4" Super AMOLED devices.
@Maxipad If you've used an Evo for a day, it's hard to go back. The ease of hitting what you want on the screen is great.
@TareG
I think even 800x480 on a 4.3" screen is good. Sure it's less dpi, but it means you can hold your phone at a more comfortable distance away when viewing pictures/videos/webpages.
Get a nice slouch going on :)
Please let it come to Europe!
@Stringerdb
It must be, since the Desire isn't even in the US yet, and Europe has no Evo equivalent.
Anyone else singing U2?
Which Carriers ?
This article has made my day :) I'm due for upgrade soon, and I don't want to be forced into getting a standard Desire. Please HTC - rush this one to market ASAP!!!
Why would I want Snapdragon on this device?? Bring on Tegra 2, or Scorpion. With a screen that big, and with Android, power consumption becomes a real concern. Snapdragon has got to be the "most stupid" 1 Ghz processor out there.
I'd take a 4" Hummingbird Super AMOLED phone over that Desire HD any day. Thanks HTC, I'll wait for your Tegra 2 and Scorpion releases.
Isn't 3.0 (Gingerbread) supposed to be out in October? Why not just release it with that?
About 2 months ago all I did was research on how I could get the HTC Desire on Verizon. (Buying off eBay unlocked or from US Cellular)
Now a new hope!...just in time for my upgrade (keeping fingers crossed)
@cdsfire So now you're gonna have a phone for 2 years thats already 8 months old when you get it? No thanks.
@cdsfire
Why do you want a HTC Desire on Verizon? That makes no sense: you have Droid X, Droid and the Incredible.
@icase81 Well they are rumoring a couple new features
(4.3-inch WVGA screen -- no word if it's AMOLED or SLCD -- and an 8-megapixel camera with 720p video recording. Other rumored details include Android 2.2, 4GB of internal storage)
I'd consider that a new(er) phone.
Another week, another Android...
I hope that makes Samsung release a GSM-flavored Epic phone.
Can we get a WM6.5 ROM for this?
HTC HD3
was hoping for the same res as the iphone4 in the specs, thats all the Desire HD is missing :(
snapdragon is outdated already. dual-core or bust
4GB internal storage...don't be greedy HTC. Get with the times 8GB minimum, 16GB preferably, especially for a high end device with a big price.
Great, just great :-) !
4.3 is the new 3.7
@JamRoc18
It is the best size. Sits so comfortably in your hand and makes for great media viewing.
I dislike all this "ooh lets make phones as thin and light as possible"
I understood it when phones were as big as your arm and weighed 5 kilos, but I want the reassurance of a nice weight in my hand and pocket.
Fuck it! I love my Desire - and right now it's pretty much the best phone you can get in Europe. (well, you CAN get the N1, but it isn't really present)
But then again - I was thinking about getting the Legend because of its unibody casing ...
Good god HTC has a new phone daily... Same crap different name. lmao
goodbye nexus one... i see my next phone :)
i wonder if it will overheat and loopboot like my desire. probably yes.
just give us samoled screen and flash for camera.I'm sold =))
another phone with a metal frame? lets hope nothing like the iphone antenna fiasco. i'd hate to see HTC go thru all this media blitzing
Damnit, I'm upgrading in a month. I was going for the Desire, but now I have to hold out (with my G1!) for this.
Stupid UK, why couldn't we just have had the Evo (at least a 3G version) ages ago so I wouldn't have this conundrum?
At least, they won't encrypt the ROM (unlike Motorola).
@MiddleFinger NNOOO UPGRADE!! dont downgrade the truth
Forget the Desire. HD Desire is the one for me. BRING TO AT&T!! Verizon and Sprint have TOO MANY ANDROIDS! I just want something good so I can stop complaining please deliver AT&T!
Why can't HTC and every other company make a android phone with 32gb of storage?
I cannot believe it is going to take till October to get this in the States. They should have released this with T-Mobile or AT&T at the same time the EVO 4G was released. Of course, that would ruin their "Exclusive" game. I'm currently using an HD2 on AT&T's network and I love it. Add Android and you've got a very decent phone.
I'd like to see a front mounted camera, 16GB of Memory, Android 2.2. Very nice!!!
Damn it. The only thing I wish different on my HTC Desire was a bigger screen. Damn it all.
When will we see HTC phones with a decent GPU?!?! The GPU from Desire sucks compared with the one from Samsung Galaxy S !!!!

Missed this first time round. Won't be 'upgrading' mine to this. Not worth it.
This sounds awesome! excellent size, better then the current desire.
Now I have to stay with my sucky phone for a few more months until this comes out.
Gotta love the battery status on that image.
I would gladly drop my iPhone for this beauty, only question, 850mhz/1900mhz GSM???
-Considering desire is a multimedia mobile has a shockingly low provided memory storage, should have come with 32GB storage moved backwards on storage capacity.
-Did not use edge to edge viewable screen space, its a touch screen mobile absolutely no reason to have any physical buttons, could have extended the vertical display by 2.5cm easily. The black bar around the sides completely unnecessary and could have extended the horizontal view by 3mm x 2.
-Cannot do video calls? a major backward step in mobile phone communication technology.
-Mobile users want 1080p video recording.
- Irritating having to press the top physical button and then drag the touch screen every time making a call, when making lots of calls throughout the day is very irritating and bad design.
-Days use of battery before recharge, needed a higher nuclear powered battery
Other that completely blows my former Nokia N96 outa the water.
What do you get when you cross a Evo 4g with a legend and add a little bit of desire and a some new technology.
The HTC desire HD, this phone is going to blow every one away 4.3 inch screen, aluminum unibody design, 8 MP rear camera as well as a front one, 1080p video recording, 1.5Ghz snapdragon dual core, and to top it all off Android 3.0. I really hope they keep the kickstand from the Evo, What other phone can compete with this, say buy buy iPhone, I'm calling it right now.
