@Sly Cooper Well Apple always tries to show they are the ones, who only invest or innovate more than anyone else. In any case, other also do things like that and they do show off, not keep secrete like Apple.
@hary536 Absolutely right.. i was about to comment about this.. and thought of putting it with this one... Other companies may be spending more than this on their research but nobody shows off like apple... and dumb iphone owners love this things..
Sony had 8 hours batteries in their laptop even before apple was dreaming about it...but when they made it ...they will show factory videos and designs and fr..kin graphical videos...
I know smart people use apple because they like it... BUT i can bat , that most of the iphone owners are dumb and stupid..(they like it because iphone has the easiest interface... but they dont F__cking think that they are using only the things that STEVE F__ckin JOBS WANTS them to use..! )
Open Source ROCKS! I love you Froyo, and you too N1.
Now.. Android users are smart und iPhone users are dumb. Seriously? Go tell that my mum, who still doesn't get how to use the Milestone. Tell that the people on Engadget who own iPhones. I BET they are way smarter (and possibly more mature) than you. Yeah, I like the iPhone because of the UX, small but important features and because it's simple. So what? Why are you calling me stupid?
Shut up please and GTFO. I seriously hate these people.
@dansus I hold mine normally as I have any other phone i've ever had data is as fast as always and it does infact hold 3G signal much better than my old 3GS .
Amazing testing facilities... my jaw was open the whole article.
However...
A setup this elaborate just seems to make missing something as basic as putting your finger over a space on the antenna look that much more ridiculous.
What a stupid remark. "Only dumb people use iphones!"
iPhones can be jailbroken too, and if your are someone like me, who doesn't like to spend a lot of time talking on the phone anyways, the antenna issue isn't a big deal. It's not Insta-drop like some people seem to suggest, either. I don't talk on the phone enough to even have call-dropping issues with my iPhone 3G.
I admit, I've been tempted to switch over to Verizon and get an Android and try it out, but I'm already invest in the iPhone with over a couple hundred bucks in Apps. I'm also fairly happy with my iPhone 3G, only the performance feels slow. Which the iPhone 4 would fix for me.
Not to mention the abundance of great games coming out for the iPhone that I want to be able to enjoy. I'd miss out on Android.
People aren't stupid for not making the same choice you make. Get over yourself.
@trolling Which is worse? They fucked up the testing and released a faulty phone through sheer ignorance or they tested the phone thoroughly, knew it was sub par and willingly released it anyways knowing that all they would have to do is placate gullible consumers with a $0.30 bumper which is
"According to Phil, what we were looking at was "the most advanced lab for doing RF studies that anyone in the world has.""
ROFLMAO...sorry Apple but that distinction belongs to Nokia who invented the darn technology. And if it is so darned advanced they would have found the problem (which is being denied even now) coz others found it in 2002 for crying out loud. Considering only about 70 odd personnel (including 18 PhDs or whatever) work in total for RF testing makes them woefully under equipped as a lab.
It is amazing how much Apple under Jobs is all about dog-and-pony shows and smoke-and-mirrors. Not once did they say, they screwed up. It is all about passing the blame and making idiotic statements like the above when in fact its clear that their RF testing was totally inadequate.
@naashak I guess they didn't see the need honestly I wouldn't expect people to make much a fuss about IF you cover up a small point it drops signal a bit. it happened on the old iphone and every phone ever made just iphone 4's is much more obvious so people complain!
I'd just like to say they did all this testing and they didn't notice this issue? Really Apple? I think it is more likely they knew about it and didn't expect it to be as big ad it is now. I think Apple needs to be taken down a notch, I think Apple and Steve jobs for that matter have gotten way too full of themselves and arrogant. I don't think a company with that ethos should be in such a strong position they are being to become unresponsible and exporting their customers...I'm not an Apple hater I just don't like their ethos...
@dvp0008 dude, I study at the university of Ghent in Belgium(this is the highest ranked university in Belgium) and about 85% of my school uses iphone so you're suggesting that everybody at my school is dumb ??
@asgiov I can't believe you spend that much money on apps for your phone. Blows my mind I can't imagine paying for apps or per song. I must have it good on android and Microsoft's zune.
Your just here to hate aren't you? Apple messes this one up but they make great products.
The point of the wide angle is so you can see more of the room. Yes the wider the angle the more exaggerated what ever is in it. The more we all get to see about the overall look of the room. You have no idea what you really want. That photo shows us the room while giving us closer detail of the chamber in question.
You want a photo so you can just see the feet on the guy and a small section of the chamber? thats it? thats normal.
What are you even doing here? I just see you hating on engadget.
@mathie so how did you test theese revolutionary figures, or is this just the number of people in belgium that you noticed their phones because they look like your phone.
btw just because people go to school doesn't mean that they are not stupid there are many stupid people in college.
He's already looking ahead of all your trolls...and once the next gen iPhone is released - people won't pay ANY attention to any other shortcommings as long as the antena issue is fixed! And believe me - they will fix it.
So it's clever Stevo's tactics because the next iPhone will fly off the shelves as you've never seen before!!!
it doesn't take an expensive test room to know you don't put a god damn antenna right on the side of a phone where fingers grip it, assuming you have to expose it at all. God forbid they put it on the very bottom cener or top center of the phone, we wouldn't be having this conversation.
Apple lost a lot of points yesterday not just admitting the design was faulty and instead pointing the finger at everyone else. I expected subtrefuge, but not quite that level of blatancy. It's also clear now that Topolsky is the Macchurian candidate - the apple puppet in Engadget, because he's NEVER ever critical.
BTW, nice fluff piece Josh. I especially liked the last paragraph where you throw objectivity to the wind and let your apple allegiance shine, lecturing us on how and why we should have never doubted Apple, that "of course" they did testing because after all "they're a multibillion dollar company" and thus mistakes don't get made. Why don't you just go work for them. Oh wait.
@dansus Great, anyone that has a problem with the phone just go back and return it and get your refund and stop bit$&ing about it. You don't like it? Return it. Now on to anything else other than iphone4
@Vincent I am willing to bet the folks at Engadget that use the iPhone have all jail broken there phones so they can have the freedom that want and deserve.
I remember watching a pod cast and Joshua was asked what would need to happen for him to switch to Android. He could think of no reason to not switch... not a single thing. Yet he said he will not, because he loves his jail broken iPhone. Just.... "there is something not quite there yet for Android"
Here's exactly how antenna-gate happened and why: You've got one iconic figure surrounded by nothing but yes men. Once Steve liked the design no one dared question it anymore, it was "golden", least not some lowly RF engineer with concerns. Think the president of Iran and how no one dares question him. Jobs and Ahmadenijad could swap jobs for a month and not even skip a beat.
I love how much you're calling people out for being stupid, and yet you are continuously demonstrating your inability to punctuate a fucking sentence properly. You, sir, have proven your dumbassedness.
Not only that, people seem to believe this will actually help in the testing of real-life performance of devices. If they did so, someone has to teach all of their PhDs what's the point of an anechoic chamber. Yes, Apple's are flashy, but they are meant to isolate and stop the reflection of diferent types of waves. Basically it is cellphone heaven inside them. I HATE Apple's marketing practices.
I know it's naive to think I can have any impact, but:
STOP THE FANBOY FIGHTING!
All the platforms/devices have their own merits, and I for one LIKE TO USE BOTH iOS *and* Android. Likewise, I think WP7 looks unique and innovative, and I can't wait to get my hands on a device.
I am a semi-geek and software dev, and I know there are many more like myself who like to witness all technology moving forward, and who don't care to get involved in petty disagreements about whose phone platform or operating system is "best". Buy whatever you phone you like best and fits your needs!
All this, and Apple still manage to come out with a product that is inferior to earlier versions at its primary function. And Jobs still finds a way to brag about it.
For some reason it seems that the ones complaining the most about the signal drop issues are Android fanboys or those that dont even have the phone.
Admittedly it has a large flaw, but one can either get a bumper, turn off 3G when making lengthy calls, hold the phone with their right hand, or just RETURN THE DAM THING!
@NikAmi said, “… knew it was sub par and willingly released it”
No, they said it was sub-perfect.
I'm amazed at how many engineering geniuses we have created in the last few weeks who know more about telephony, antennas, etc. Engineering by definition is about tradeoffs between cost, size, durability, chance of catastrophic failure, etc.
In the iPhone4, Apple chose size, expected quality and some others, over the possibility that idiots who would try to misuse their phone would report it as substandard. They got what they wanted: a phone that, in my experience, gets better reception for regular use, but sure enough has the gone spot. I can have better or worse reception with the iPhone4 and I choose better.
@NikAmi .30? more like at least 4$ but let's not get into the facts of running a business and understand cost opportunity on accessories. car chargers for .30? ok sounds right. but the bumpers aren't cheap to manufacture....
@hary536 They are only showing this cause all you haters are crying about how they didn't even invest the time and money into the iPhone 4 antenna system.
No matter what apple does you people will have bad things to say.
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
@Mr iPhone seriously tho has anyone had a dropped call because of this without them deliberetly putting there hand there.
and that testing chamber looks like sum kind of torture chamber you have to escape from in a cheap horror movie
@Sly Cooper
Well Apple always tries to show they are the ones, who only invest or innovate more than anyone else.

I dont make calls but it takes ten times longer to do data intensive stuff when im like, you know, holding it.
It went back.

Apple had won me over finally, now i wont go back till at least V5.

I like Android, but you sir are an excellent example why Apple and Android fans cant have an intelligent discussion.
Apple users are not dumb just because they like something different.

@Gizmodo
Oh, if only Gizmodo had been invited to this! We'd have inside out shots of the iPhone 5 right about now.
"On of the PHD holding scientists accidentally dropped the iPhone 5 into our bag. We tried to return it, but they simply brushed us off."
the classic my dick is bigger than yours strategy
@conscious
Yes, an amazing way to use a wide angle lens to make a 20x20x20 room look like 100x100x100.
Sorry, just give up some basic photo shots, we're not that challenged.
