BlackBerry Storm 3 detailed in training slide: same look, more RAM?
For those of you hoping that RIM could pull off a handset capable of challenging the incredibly slim and futuristic tree-borne Android handsets in the touchphone hardware arena, you'll have to dream past the Storm 3. From the looks of it, we'll be getting a fairly minor "refresh" of the Storm 2, according to our tipster, with upgrades more designed to accommodate BlackBerry 6 than anything. As seen on the slide, the phone will double the Storm 2's RAM with 512MB, the camera will be bumped up to 5 megapixels, and the WiFi is being shifted to 802.11n -- a spec RIM is already rocking on the Pearl 3G, so not unprecedented. Outside of BlackBerry 6 and that (supposedly) blazing new WebKit browser, we're probably most enthused about the "coming soon" 3G mobile hotspot functionality, something that's made our Android handsets invaluable as of late. We were already hearing the Storm 3 and Curve 3 (another refresh, says our tipster) were holiday possibles for Verizon, and the bottom of this slide points to an "___ember" month.

Android Please?
@Cainhunpi RIM won't make an Android phone until they become desperate. And with all the corporate users they grab, that isn't happening anytime soon.
@Cainhunpi
why would rim put android on it if they use blackberry software
Lets hope they finally pulled their head out of their asses and did away with the "push button" touch screen. They have tried twice with it and it's still fail, give it up already and just make it like a normal capacitative ffs.
I don't care if some people like it, 90% of the users would prefer it not to be and is the #1 reasons for RMA on it.
@treats Why would RIM make an Android phone? As moronical as that post was, they just need to give up on the Storm line-up... FailStorm.
@Cainhunpi
LTE?
Memory?
Data speeds?
Processor?
Media provider?
Follow these questions after the break.
@MowDownJoe They should be desperate now cuz they suck, cheap hardware, stupid boring UI, and small ass screens. Evo 4g baby, android 4 life!
@Cainhunpi
LOL, Android is terrible for corporate use, exactly what the BB is for.
@MGore32
Testers say it has a 1GHz processor and will likely be the 1st or 2nd LTE device offered by Verizon. Just an FYI. If true, those specs alone make it a worthwhile upgrade IMO.
@MGore32
Unlikely it's LTE. Heard that LTE utterly ravages the battery life of portable devices.
I doubt that slide said it has 512Mb RAM. More likely to be talking about Internal ROM memory. VERY few consumers care about RAM (we here are the exceptions)
@bighap LoL, the 1st Sprint 4G device is quite arguably the best Phone on the Market... if this is the 1st Verizon 4G device, LTE won't be getting off to a very good start...
@Son Of a Gun Besides the 1st LTE device will almost certainly be an HTC, Samsung or maaaaaabye LG phone. And most definitely Android or WP7...
@Son Of a Gun
You seem to be certain of quite a few things.
"You gotta sauce?" LOL
@Son Of a Gun
LTE > WiMAX
Verizon > Sprint
BlackBerry has a massive smartphone market share and their customer base typically isn't the type to need something like a 4.3" screen and a kickstand.
@treats Agreed, and the worst part about that is it makes sneaking even the simplest of text messages through during a meeting or other quiet time near impossible. Even sending just the word "OK" still sounds like CLICK CLICK.
@Son Of a Gun Most likely Motorola will be the first LTE device. They got themselves a little partnership going on..
@Cesarcerros
This is just a refresh of the Storm 2 I think. Look at the codename "Odin" at the top...
@MowDownJoe
i like how the article completely undermines the device by not even mentioning it has a brand new webkit browser, which may potentially be better than any other phones browser.
@bighap
Lte is not better than wimax. Thy are meant for different things. Wimax is a better choice go a city wide internet. Lte is better for mobile data.
And Verizon ducking rapes the help out of their customers. Also sprint is cheaper has faster 3g has has a free roaming on Verizon so the coverage advantage of Verizon us mute
@DefPoet
We are talking about a mobile device here. There is a reason nobody besides Sprint has chosen WiMAX for their 4G technology choice and that they are considering LTE now. WiMAX is the inferior technology.
@Cainhunpi
Why Android or ios. When the browser beats them both. http://www.salomondrin.net/2010/07/18/blackberry-webkit-browser-vs-android-and-iphone/ engaged just doesn't want to admit it
@DefPoet
LTE is indeed better than wimax, higher potential speeds, lower latency and much better coverage/penetration.
Also, Sprint roams on Verizon's 1X network, not 3G.
@Cainhunpi: that picture was clearly or blurrily taken with a BBStorm......
@Cainhunpi
Meet the new boss... same as the old boss!
@Son Of a Gun Verizons first 4G phone most likely will be the phone from Motorola with the 2Ghz processor.
@bighap may I ask, where did you get the info?
@serge
http://www.salomondrin.net/2010/06/27/storm-3-early-specs/
Wow that's so *yawn* innovative.
@DoctarPeppar
:)
@DoctarPeppar Storm II was a refresh of Storm I (a POS of a phone...) and now Storm III is a refresh of Storm II? I hated that phone with a passion, and now they're making it a 3rd time?
*Hugs my Droid X*
@pple is poo
You can't compare this to the 3GS...the 3G was Arm11 and the 3GS was A8 CorTex, along with a much better GPU (including OpenGL ES 2.0 support)...if you know anything about ARM architecture, it was a _huge_ leap.
@DoctarPeppar
I never understood why people were so hype over "crackberrys". Even when I was working in the business world, I preferred windows mobile. And when my friend first got their storm I was extra disappointed. They need to stop with that stupid clicky screen. FAIL... now move on. Looks like this Storm will be more April showers than El nino....
RIM has got to be the most overrated cell phone maker in the world. My god they do ONE thing good instant sync email wow that's so stellar! And even sucks as far as HTML goes. I have NEVER had a single HTML email render right on my old Storm, the apps are terrible the web browser is literally unusable even Opera Mini 5, its slow, the screen clicking has got to be biggest fail, its low resolution, small, and to top if off, i payed $200 for mine a while back. Wish i did phone research back then!
Mr. Blurrycam out in full force! Storm 3 is a logical BB6 launch device though.
@Rick Astley
It's Nilay Patel I tell you. He IS Mr.Blurry cam.
@tobsmonster2
Photo was mostly likely taken with a blackberry. I have one for work - still perplexed why these are popular.
@Rick Astley Mr. Blurrycam + Engadget = together forever and never to part.
@rutter9
You and me both.
@Rick Astley Mr. Blurrycam is never gonna give you up
That's quite the underwhelming Storm.
@blokeyhighlander More like a spinkle...
@Tooonces
A sprinkle can lead to rain. This is more like a mist or fog
Sounds good. A BlackBerry is probably not for me though.
more like a tropical depression
@rmbrown09 DEPRESSION
Improved screen resolution???
@maattp It will probably be the same resolution as the 9800 slider, I haven't heard the slider's resolution in any videos though.
@maattp i hope so, 480x360 is not gonna cut it anymore
maybe on the small screens (9700, 9650 and other curve devices)
but the larger screen touch screens need a higher resolution!
If it's priced right ($99 with none of that mail in rebate nonsense), then it would be a solid device.
Sounds more like a shower than a storm.
