Droid 2 being prepared for launch, set to arrive August 23rd?
The Droid 2's been leaking out all over the place in the past few weeks, but it looks like it'll be another month before it officially hits shelves -- we just got these shots from a packaging facility that's handling the phone, which puts it right on schedule for that rumored August 23rd launch. We're also told that the phone will definitely ship with an 8GB microSD card, and that pricing appears to be $199 on contract and $599 standalone, although those numbers could change. Just a few short weeks left, we suppose -- although give the rate at which this thing is leaking, we're thinking Motorola and Verizon might do well to push that date up a couple weeks. We'll see.

Looks pretty blurry. Here's to Droid 2 running stock 2.2!
@Rick Astley
So, can someone please explain to me why this is better than the original Droid.
I got the first droid when it came out, and it looks like it has the same camera, same OS, same form factor/size, and a smaller bundled sd card. Is the 1GHz processor the only thing that's improved? And they're charging 200$ like last year?
@Rick Astley
its an ugly phone. no hype because noone cares about this boring slider
@pple is poo
You first.
Idiot.
@Rick Astley
Blurrycam = nilay patel. He has made fools of us for thev ery last time...
@Rick Astley
wow...i am so confused so there a Droid X and Droid 2?
@Seven2k
Ohh noooo! Yes there is. Droid X, Droid 2 and Droid Incredible.
@Salmoncannon
The keyboard is a major improvement, apparently. If you had an original Droid, you know how bad that was and how it got even worse after a lot of use.
Also, it has an updated look to it, more RAM, and a better processor.
@pple is poo
Apparently, you don't like him for some reason :
Confirmed: Verizon discontinues Kin

@Rick Astley
I hate you Rick...
Your stupid Rick rolled crap on youtube is wasting bandwidth...
Anyone who references you should die by a force choke
@Rick Astley
I knooooow. I got myself a EVO. I know about all them HTC flavors but not aware of the Moto ones.
@Shadow08
Hmm.... I'm not quite sure what you mean about the keyboard. It just takes some getting used to, but it's definitely not as bad as it was originally made out to be. I can't touch type very well, but I can't do that well on any phone.
Otherwise, thanks for the info. I still doubt this new iteration is enough of an improvement for anyone with a Droid 1 to upgrade though (I'm sure there are a lot of people like me with a 1 year contract, which is why I say that).
@Salmoncannon It has 8GB of internal memory.
It has DLNA, 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, better keyboard, a tad different design. Also Stock 2.2 (well maybe not stock, but is 2.2)
I think thats all.
@Salmoncannon
Faster processor (which is 45nm so better battery life, too), more RAM, redesigned keyboard, Android 2.2.
I don't think the Droid 2 is supposed to be a significant upgrade from the first Droid, but rather just a refresh. Those with the first Droid should be happy with what they have as it's still a great phone, but those who are going to be getting a new phone may look at the Droid 2 as it's a bit better than its predecessor.
@Shadow08
So that is why you think it's worth 200 bucks… no 8mp camera , no 720 p recording , hdmi out , front facing camera ???????
@Rick Astley
its an ugly phone. Android is ugly so the combo is perfect. no hype because noone cares about this boring slider
@Rick Astley This sucks I just got a droid. I should've bought an iPhone4
@Salmoncannon
I agree I mean so what they changed the keyboard and processer that's it!!! Highly not worth 200 dollars!
@Dbasedgod -- "no 8mp camera , no 720 p recording , hdmi out , front facing camera"
If you needs those specs in your next phone... find a phone that has them and buy it.
Verizon has 92,000,000 customers. Every day 250,000 customers are eligible for their New-Every-Two upgrade.
There is always somebody who is ready to buy a new phone. If this isn't the phone for you, either wait longer or switch carriers to find the perfect phone.
@Salmoncannon
Yeah, it seems a little twisted. And the original Droid is now down to $100...
@Rick Astley : it has stock eFuse included ! (That's why I won't get any Moto phone from now on)
@Rick Astley
oh God I hope so Rick!
@Salmoncannon
Today (in great part to FX delivering the wrong package to my co) I had actually held one in my hands....prototype possibly, but man this thing is sleek, thin, sexy, and very solid. Sturdy is a good word for the physical form due to the material is very durable and no shaky parts whatsoever. I could not turn it on due to no battery shipped with it. keyboard is what the leak has it. raised buttons...rubbery and seems like a very good keyboard (much better and droid 1). I wanted to take pictures but didn't wanna really deal with legal crap. 4 capacitive buttons on front...menu, home, back, and search. the overall feel is good...solid. I have had the Droid 1 and in comparison a nice re-fresh and upgraded device. I hope this helps clears some things. I described best I could without pics or vids. cheers....
I thought Mr. Blurrycam had upgraded his camera?
@who said what
Using a flip phone to take a picture of a phone like this is blasphemy.
Looks like the clone wars have begun....
*cue imperial music*
I guess you could say this Android is....
*puts on sunglasses*
leaking oil.
Yeaaaaaaaaah!
I was still holding hope this wasn't the final design. I'm really dissapointed theres been little change.
I hope that has 8 gb internal as well, because my original was shipped with 16 sdhc. I still won't upgrade because this runs that stupid Blur. I hope it does well though. Android ftw!
@cobjones
Yes, this has 8gb internal storage, just like the X. And it will be the first deviced launched with 2.2.
Yes, it would be nice if they pushed it up by a "couple" (er, few) weeks. August 4th or 5th would suit my schedule just fine.
I really want one of these using the last available upgrade on my VZW account..
Can Canada haz? Our phone selection is terrible. I am enjoying my x10 though.
L
By the way, certainly the insider who took these shots could have read the box (or taken a clearer pic of it) to show the specific spec list.
Come on MAN!
i think it is time for me to get a phone that "does" ;p
Forget this, where's the Samsung Fascinate??!?!!?! C'mon Verizon.
@Aegee14
I agree. I don't want this hunk of junk. I want the Fascinate. I went to the tmobile store to check out the Vibrant (their version) and it was sick. I'm hoping the Fascinate comes .early August and then the Droid 2 late August
Verizon needs to just come clean about this phone, press conference please so we know what it looks like and what the hell is on the inside
So umm guys besides this shipping with 2.2 and the 1ghz processor what else is new ????
@Dbasedgod Lets see, 8GB of internal memory, DLNA, 512MB of RAM, better keyboard, a tad different design, and maybe HDMI.
I think thats all.
@EggoEspada Unless the HDMI port is hidden under the battery cover, it doesn't have it. I certainly wish it did, but it doesn't.
What is this? every month a new droid?
yeah, whats up with the 199 price tag and only having 8gb stock? if you're going to have a phone that is less then the major ball buster that just came out, why would you sell it for the same price? its not even competitive within its own ranks.
the droid 2 makes me feel like its the younger brother who tries to act like the older brother so he can hang out with him but the only thing they have in common is their bloodline.
@audrywienerdog
If it's anything like the Droid X or the Droid Incredible, it will have large internal memory as well. The Droid X comes with 8 GB built in plus a 16 GB Micro SDHC card, for a total of 24 GB. Not that bad.
@Dafrety if it has those features then it would match the price point and it will do well in my opinion. but, in my opinion again, if it's going to stand up against its sibling Droid X then its going to have to have those selling points. because its going to be hard to sell a phone for the same price with anything less then most the features the X has (processing power, RAM, and most importantly storage). cause then people would feel "cheated" in a sense.
@audrywienerdog
That was what i was thinking too. This is obviously a phone with less horsepower than the droid x, and not a huge upgrade over the
original droid, and they want to charge 199 for it? Seems like a rip to me. I'm glad i just took the plunge on the droid x instead of waiting for this to drop before making my decision.
@dominationthroughfragmentation Its just as powerful as the Droid X. Its almost the same exact device, except a smaller screen and less megapixels and has a keyboard. Motorola basically did smart with this, two phones to cover everyones needs.
@EggoEspada
Don't forget less out of the box storage. Mate its just me but it just seems like a step behind. I do appreciate that vzw an moto are giving consumers a number of options in form factor that are comparably powerful.
That gives Sprint some time to sell more Evos and get the Epic out. They are going to easily have the most compelling Android phone selection.
Does the Droid 2 have a front facing camera? If not, why not. Can't believe the captivate doesn't have one.
Ohh wow another android device. With android. How exciting!
Whats new? Ohh nothing!.. it figures.
200 different devices all 200 of them look the same.
Android is not for the future sorry.
@FrankDTank
Ohh wow, another Honda. With VTEC. How exciting!
Whats new? Ohh nothing!.. it figures.
200 different cars all 200 of them look the same.
Honda is not for the future sorry.
