HP files for 'PalmPad' trademark -- a webOS tablet, perhaps?
HP's been extremely direct in saying that it plans to release webOS tablets and other devices in the future, and now that the Palm acquisition is complete, it looks like those plans are starting to move forward -- the company just filed a trademark application for "PalmPad," which certainly sounds like a webOS tablet to us. We don't know much apart from that, but it's certainly an encouraging sign -- and we can't help but feel a twinge of nostalgia for a name that harkens back to the glory days of the PalmPilot. Now we're just wondering when (this fall?), how much, and -- as usual -- what this means for the HP Slate. We'll keep our eyes open.

OH NO THEY DIDN'T!
@Alexpeegs What a lame 1st post, you had all the potential in the world, and you went the safe route. But yeah, they did.
@Son Of a Gun
WebOS is great and I think it would make a great table. Kudos to HP if true.
@Alexpeegs Gee whiz, sure is original naming scheme around here.
Wouldn't have been surprised with iPalm.
Verizon LTE palm tablet please!
@Son Of a Gun People usually blink when the opportunity opens, it is either "First!" "Yeah, but will in run Crisys" or "Something about iPhone 4"
@Evan That's exactly what I was thinking.
@Sea Urchin or, oh no they didn't.
@Alexpeegs
Ur comment doesn't make a lot of sense.it wasn't a snappy response and we were expecting it to happen.
Well any ways I'm excited to see where this is going.
@Son Of a Gun
I still wish a company called Face had bought Palm.
@Puggs
HP just wants the cache of having their name on a tablet for marketing purposes! IMHO.
Apple had the ipad under development for years and what came out was an awesome product. HP on the other hand is under pressure from to compete with Apple and ride the tablet gravy train.
But will HP make a tablet that can create as well as consume content like a laptop? Will it print? Will it cannibalize the sells of their windows laptops? Will it play nice with windows?
I don't believe that HP has the managerial muscle to make an encompassing media ecosystem like Apple.
As good as competition can be, I see HP fumbling the ball on this one.
Lets see.
@Alexpeegs Way to go HP! Welcome to the Pad-war!
@Alexpeegs
I thought it was supposed to be "Oh no, they DIH-IN."
@Son Of a Gun
Actually it seems like he had less than 2 minutes to write something. And so his brain froze.
@Smart People Play Tuba It is... OpenPalm or Palm-Strike.... Or a liberal friendly tablet called, Palm Tree/Palm Beach... Perhaps a Palm Sunday...
@Alexpeegs
Let me guess.
It's touch screen.
It can multitask.
It's cheaper than an iPad.
Who knew?
BRING. IT.
@pintolulz
And since the iPhone name was invented by Apple (not) then their naming scheme is much better.
BTW, the iPad name was first used in the media by the Mad TV crew.
Apple is always original in all they do.
@Son Of a Gun
The Hurricane code name is better.
Even has the perfect song. "rock you like a hurricane"
@tobsmonster2
LOL now that's how you do a first post!
@Puggs I agree HP should start making tables after they made that shit HP touchsmart
@Puggs
This seems very interesting
@Puggs I already got my PalmPad, only $7.99 too.

Hewlett-Pad-Kard!
@Alexpeegs
Woohoo! We have a name finally! Now it won't be long before we start seeing some leaks me thinks! :D
Who wants to start taking bets on what it's major shortcoming will be? Too small? Too big? Touchscreen not responsive enough? 2" thick? Made of plastic? Apps won't scale? No cheaper than iPad?
I am willing to bet that at least some combination of two of those shortcomings will exist, and will therefore be doomed to Joojoo, etc. fate.
@Alexpeegs
A better comment would have been:
It's inevitable that people will start referring to this as the "PP", or better yet, the "Pee Pee"
@yyandrew
And the tech world will refer to the iPad / PalmPad duo as the "iPad and the Pee Pee"
YES! YES!
Here's hoping to GOD that they don't force their own crappy media interface layer on top of WebOS for this.
They should have called it the webpad. Seems a better name if it will run WebOS.
@mnhthebest
That name make it less appealing because it kind of implies that it does web only. I do think that PalmPad is still not the best name!
@Puggs
Sure beats Pre or Pixi..
@cardfan
What's up with the P with Palm? Palm Pre/Pixi/Pilot and now a PalmPad?
@Ceyran they have P on their heads but don't call em a Pea-head
@mnhthebest
palm is still a catchy and valuable name
@Ceyran
It's called alliteration.
@Ceyran
Actually now I'm thinking of PalmPad, I hope they won't name it like that. Because it sounds like you use your palm instead of a maxipad.

@mnhthebest
Gee.. what a unique brand name... webpad? zzzzzzzzzz
'Oh,its made by Hewlett Packard?' ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!
@MAAD0320
Bruce-Lees on my head but don't call me a Lee-head.
@Puggs
like the way the iPad let's us know it only does i.
@Ceyran
"What's up with the P with Palm? Palm Pre/Pixi/Pilot and now a PalmPad?"
Pretty positive promotion of palm product, people.
PalmPad ? For such a big company I was hoping for a more original name, but I guess it will have to do.
I guess it's the "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" strategy.
At least Apple hasn't gone after people for using "pad" they way they did (and still do) with "pod." Not yet, anyway.
@Black Can't get more original than iPad, really.
@htowngator
Well people from Boston have been pronouncing ipod as ipad for years. So it's not very original.
@Black so high-five once to open, high-five twice to zoom?
Can we please get some new webos phones though!?
PLEASE!?
@DoctarPeppar
May I direct your attention to the following post:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/02/hp-ceo-we-didnt-buy-palm-to-be-in-the-smartphone-business/
I can't help but think that he inadvertently "let the cat out of the bag" that HPalm really ISN'T making any more smartphones, and all the back-peddling HP's been doing since this came out is just window dressing to hide that truth. I love my Pre Plus, but I'm afraid it may be my last WebOS phone.
I hope I'm wrong.
@Smart People Play Tuba you are wrong and you should direct your attention to the following video:

@Smart People Play Tuba
Did you bother to read the follow up to that statement. Guess not. Give it try next time. The point was to be in more than just the smartphone business.
