HP files for 'PalmPad' trademark -- a webOS tablet, perhaps?
HP's been extremely direct in saying that it plans to release webOS tablets and other devices in the future, and now that the Palm acquisition is complete, it looks like those plans are starting to move forward -- the company just filed a trademark application for "PalmPad," which certainly sounds like a webOS tablet to us. We don't know much apart from that, but it's certainly an encouraging sign -- and we can't help but feel a twinge of nostalgia for a name that harkens back to the glory days of the PalmPilot. Now we're just wondering when (this fall?), how much, and -- as usual -- what this means for the HP Slate. We'll keep our eyes open.

It's funny to watch the evolution of all the iPad haters. Last January the HP Slate and JooJoo were going to "kill" iPad dead, even though no one had ever seen or used one. If those weren't enough, then Courier was going to do the job, again based only on a CGI video of a concept.
Now, six months later we have the iPad selling like hotcakes around the world. HP killed the slate, JooJoo was a joke (and a bad one at that), and Courier is dead and buried. HP buys Palm (ten minutes ago) and we see people claiming they will magically have a tablet product ready for sale in just a few months. What are you people smoking? It takes 12 to 18 months to move a product like this from the prototype stage to manufacturing. This announcement by HP is just PR, a placeholder for the fan base so they don't look totally lost and pwned as Apple kicks their ass.
@Ed T
and good luck finding a battery robust enough to run WebOS at a level that compete with the iPad's battery life.
Not going to happen.
@dogma Yeah, because Apple is the only company capable of manufacturing products with long last batteries....
Really? Are you THAT brainwashed?
@Tony Clifton
Not at all. It's just webos is a hog on battery.
@dogma How do you know??? Are you apart of HP's development team? I guess only Apple can make battery efficient products... Man I like Apple but GEEZ the level of delusion from Apple fanboys is just insane.
This is coming from a proud owner of a MacBook and Nexus One - no bias here
Just seeing the title of this article in my RSS reader made me inordinately happy. I just really love WebOS, and on a slate-type device it will simply own.
But I want a stylus too, HP, Palm, whoever. DIGITIZER! Work AND play, you heard? I quit finger painting 30 years ago.
Ha the initals are PP. xD
I really hope they do a WebOS tablet soon, I don't care about a WebOS phone at the moment, I'm fairly happy with my Evo. But I would love to have a 5-10 inch WebOS tablet device (7 inch would be perfect for me).
@zsmorr Thats what he said.
@zsmorr
Speak for yourself. If I had my way I'd like to get a new WebOS phone 1-2 a year. And no The Pre Plus doesn't count as a new phone.
@zsmorr
I second 7 inch, that would be perfect and still be pocket-able, more so than an iPad =P
PalmPlane would have worked. Aside from the PalmPilot pun/reference, as an engineer, I think of flat surfaces when planes come to mind.
ZOMG Palm Pad sounds like a feminine product.
/s
Are we going to beat the name to death like we did with the iPad?
The Pre launched in June 2009 and the Pixi launched in November 2009. Aside from the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus launching in January this year and having it come to AT&T along with a few other carriers outside the US after that, that's all we've heard from the webOS farm.
Would I like to see WebOS 2.0 on a tablet? Yes. Would I also like to see HPalm come out with a new WebOS smartphone that can make them competitive again? Absolutely. They've already done portrait slider and portrait candbar. How about some slate or landscape slider love?
Release it. Blow me away palm. And even better give me a new phone!
I bet this Palm Pad thing is going to be a touch screen that they build into their HP Printers!
The name itself has little to do with it's success. Remember how everyone thought (and still thinks) the iPad is the worst name ever for any product (not just tablets) and that sales will tank because of it?
What HP needs to do is basically copy the Droid commercials. They are currently the best commercials on tv (in terms of creating interest and sales..not talking about creativity). Palm's name is too "soft". They need to create a series of commercials that basically talks about how awesome it is and end it with a masculine or robotic voice that says "PALM!!!". Once a series of these commercials are aired enough, it'll eventually be in people's subconscious. When people think of tablets, they'll immediately hear the "PALM!!!" robotic voice in their heads.
web o/s is still alive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! yay
yes. YES!
Never used WebOS but I am very intrigued by it, I def would love to explore my curiosities of this OS on a tablet. If it comes out sometime in the Fall that's even better because then I can hold off on a iPad.
Hey, at least its better than PalmPed.
Palmipad would have been clever, my duck ...
After this great piece of tech hits, looks like I won't be signing up for a new AT&T contract.
Unlike the iPad, a webOS tablet will run Flash. (Theoretically, of course, Palm has yet to release Flash Player on the App Catalog, even though Adobe announced that it is complete.)
I tried playing around a little with the iPad, and it seems snappy enough. I hope HP puts some good hardware into this.
