Apple shows Nokia's N97 Mini can be force choked, too (video)
Nokia claims it always prioritizes antenna performance over physical design, and we'll take them at their word, but that apparently didn't exempt one Espoo handset from Apple's grip of doom. Here's the Nokia N97 Mini going down for the count, from a full seven bars to two. Of course, Apple doesn't mention whether calls or data drop when the handset's held this way. Video after the break.

You know. This whole Apple thing is blown way out of the water. If any other phone, which obviously the do, Has the same problems, Nobody would even care. Why? Because There phones aren't nearly as popular and high in demand. Thats the only reason why people care about this because it comes from apple. my IPHONE 3GS with iOS4 4.01, in downtown, full bars, if I hold it the same way your told not to hold the iPhone 4, I went from full bars down to 1 in 15 seconds. I'm just so disgusted in all this PR about the antenna problems. Everyone has them, Get over it or buy a new phone. Simple and Done.
@andthen
Deathgrip only causes upheaval on 'Magical' phones. No one cares if regular phones do it occasionally.
I find your lack of bars disturbing...
Why would you want to have a "see, other phones can do it to!" video of a phone that you can buy new unlocked for what it costs for an iPhone 4 with a contract? Never mind that the phone is a year old. Way to really stick it to all those detractors Apple!
pointing fingers again
i know for a fact after this apple is screwed
nokia WILL mess them up for this showing a faulty model
@deepspacebar
Is that the same Nokia who are replacing their CEO?
When I tried to do this on my Droid, it went from 3 bars to 4... Wierd..
Not blinded by hate... We see dumb people...
I certainly hope Nokia will come out and politely wipe the floor with Apple's antenna technology. All they need to do is a proper test, and it will be done.
@JFH
Like the proper tests Nokia did before advising the right way hold their phones in their user manuals, dating back at least ten years, you mean?
That sort of proper test?
I love the way everyone holds Steve Jobs to ransom for Apple's foibles. People - there is more to Apple than Steve Jobs, grow up and stop hurling your pathetic insults at him.
Yes, Apple are pointing the finger at other companies. But can you honestly say you wouldn't do the same in their position? Ok, let's for one moment assume that you've just made a phone. There is one problem which exists with most every other mobile phone ever made in different shapes and sizes. Then, instead of celebrating all of the good things about it, every last bit of the media is CONSTANTLY talking about it. People are on technology websites hurling pathetic insults at them (ahem.)
Why is it fair for other companies to make fun of Apple but when they do it back it's SO WRONG. In the same situation, most human beings would do the same.
It's because it's Apple. Because they're successful, people feel the need to jealously hurl faeces at them on the internet so they can maintain their egotistic self-image of "amazingness". Seriously, you're flaming a company over a phone on the internet. GROW UP.
Also, why is everyone getting so worked up? It's a telephone. If you don't like it, don't buy it. No-one is making you. Stop arguing and keep your jealous little opinions to yourselves.
@charlieward but steve jobs is their spokesman...who else are we meant to have beef with?
@charlieward Don't swallow Apples lies... Read up about it... This problem in fact doesn't exist on *any* other phone, despite Apple's attempts to convince you otherwise.
Nobody holds an N97 like that. It's uncomfortable and not very natural.
However, holding the iPhone 4 naturally is resulting in the signal drop.
THAT'S the difference.
@skbenja
Hey, who do you think you are?
Telling people how to hold their phones?
How I want to hold my phone is none of your business.
notice how apple turned youtube comments off for any videos having to do with antennas. They need to stop wasting their time and worry about performance testing on their own phones.
And how many call do you make holding the phone that way....But whatever, I think Apple should just quit trying to excuse their "perfection" and fix the problem with something other then a rubberband that detracts from the whole look that we want to begin with...I would not put a case on a phone that is so great to look at I would want a refund....BOO's and JEER's
I tryed that 5 times, and what i found was that the call didn´t miss, but in 4 attempts the signal went down. Suck it apple!
Nokia have more experience in mobile devices (since 1968) and apple (2006 [iphone] ).... so
Nokia owns apple
What a bunch of f'ing idiots.
Instead of FIXING the piece of sh!t, they're spending time doing THIS??
Are you KIDDING me?
Steve-O - quit jerking off with other manufacturers phones, and
F I X T H A T S H ! T
I just squeezed the CRAP out of my captivate, in an area where 3G sucks and I have EDGE, and it freaking dropped from 5 bars to FOUR. that's with BOTH HANDS wrapped around the damn phone.
Shut up, take that dildo out, M A N U P, and FIX THE SH!T for the people that PAID for it.
Bunch of childish idiocy over there in Cupertino.
i just think this is bad PR on Apple's behalf. I'm sure it's been said before, but they're just trying to make it out that because everyone else has problems it's ok for their iPhone to have problems.
I have a couple issues on top of that.
1) It's not the same for iPhone as it is for all these other phones, because none of them received nearly as much hype and had as much expectation and 'promise' before they were released.
2) I wonder how many hundreds of different models of phone Apple had to do this to before they found a couple that even had this problem.
Man up Apple.
@bentoovey
They just had to look on YouTube to find videos dating back before the iPhone 4 was released, only thing was they weren't Apple phones so no-one cared enough to whine all day on the Internet about it.
The way some of you idiots carry on, it's as if Apple invented dropped calls.
lol. N97 I had was by far the worse reception Nokia that I have ever own. N97 mini won't be much better any way. Try that on E71/72.
I can eaily make a video like this with signal jammer for like $30. No point showing this as I can make the same trick to every phone including non-smart phone.
@ecsw
So that's how they've been making these iPhone videos, with signal jammers, that would explain the low return rate.
It's all a whining, blogfest reality distortion field that doesn't gel with the iPhone 4's real world performance.
This is so stupid. I can't believe Apple can in broad daylight can make dumb of so many people. Obviously if make, any phone will loose its signal and not like iphone 4th which does not require any effort at all. Bottom Line, iphone 4 is a pathetically designed phone and apple should just admit it.....
I really loved how Apple put the Nokia phone at the lowest battery level and Samsung also had a drained battery. Whereas the iPhone 4 had a FULL charge!
If I know one thing about smartphones, it is that -in order to preserve battery- the phone concedes reception for battery life. You may notice weak signal when the battery is low.
As if trying to prove this wasn't weak on your part, you had to outdo yourself with a cheap trick that would've went by most people.
The funny part is your phone lost signal on a full battery.
Q. What happens when you grip a Nokia too tight?
A. They drop their CEO.
cause the best way to make up for your mistakes is to point out other people's mistakes
This just in! I smashed my phone into a wall and then ran over it with a truck. It went down to 0 bars! This is outrage and I demand all companies besides Apple be held responsible.
730+ comments.
Apple, suggest you read this and consider your behaviour in this matter. Please consider this thread a representative feedback about how people view your methods of doing (or not) business.
No more Apple products enter my house.
Holy sheet, I'm 6ft 2 and that guy's hands are twice the size of mine!
Also, Apple fraudsters, why would you use a phone with ONE battery bar left for this scam video?
not this phone u apple idiot!!!!!!!and....
STOP DOING THAT APPLE
I just did a check myself on the N97. When it is on 3G and you fully cover the antenna firmly from both sides, it drops 2 to 3 bars, which is logical. But it does *not* loose the full signal and still works fine. However, after a few seconds, the phone switches to GSM-mode and has full coverage again. No matter how I hold the phone, the full signal strength of the GSM network does not drop at all. When I release the phone from the most ridicilous grip to test this, it switches back to UMTS 3G, with full coverage. Nothing wrong with Nokia's design, it works perfect. Especially when you have GSM to fall back to.
The more apple does this, the more it proofs to the world their failure in iPhone 4 !!
Even iPhone fans should be disgusted at the tactics Apple is now using. Instead of spending time finding weird and hard ways to attenuate the signal on competitor phones, why not actually fix your own antenna problems?? How pathetic that Steve Jobs actually had to be asked to apologize for what they did...he just didn't want to accept that it was a problem....that guy is just oblivious to anything that may make Apple look bad.
The iPhone is a great smartphone among many great smartphones out there today....but the antenna issue is much worse on the iPhone than any other phone that Apple wants to break fingers trying to prove.
