Apple shows Nokia's N97 Mini can be force choked, too (video)
Nokia claims it always prioritizes antenna performance over physical design, and we'll take them at their word, but that apparently didn't exempt one Espoo handset from Apple's grip of doom. Here's the Nokia N97 Mini going down for the count, from a full seven bars to two. Of course, Apple doesn't mention whether calls or data drop when the handset's held this way. Video after the break.

@MrFairladyz
Stop spreading FUD about the N97 Mini.
@MrFairladyz
Nice video, now do it with one finger.
Is it goin to drop my call?
Apple just won't give up
Hey Apple quit with the displacement. I don't own an N97 Mini worry about your shit rather than others.
Apple you screwed up. Calling out others makes you no less at fault.
@bighap
that's my point exactly. Faults of other manufacturer, does not make it right for them.
And please, somebody must tell them that their phone does not require a grip of death, but just a touch at a very tin place...
They must this deception, comparing to others and telling stories about "grip of death", because this is not their case exactly.
@Corsair wrong.
Is it that hard for Apple to fess up and admit they have a problem?
This is the corporate equivalent of getting caught with your hand in the cookie jar and pointing at all your friends and shouting "THEY DO IT TOO!"
Grow up, Apple. Act like the responsible company you pretend to be.
Of course this is just magic on Apple's part and a total right?
Am I right Apple Haters? This is just made up bullshit and it's sad that Apple can't admit that they made a flaw?
Yawn this argument is just getting so stale. Just like multitasking and copy and paste. The average consumer just doesn't give a shit (and for the record that doesn't mean that they are stupid....)
@BrookLynnsFinest So if the consumers don't care why is Apple making these videos? They could/should simply ignore it, right?
So they attack others faults, but can't accept their error. Hmmm interesting, what a good company Apple is.
LOL @ Apple.
Old slogan: "Apple. It just works."
New slogan: "Apple. Everyone else sucks, too."
Dear Apple,
Until you can show these phones dropping calls where your phone also commonly will, you're not proving a thing. Yes, bars go down on most phones, the difference is your phone is dropping calls, theirs isn't.
Indie
^^THIS^^
@Indie
Exactly. I stated in comments the other day that I was sitting here at my desk and borrowed a buddy's iPhone 4. I put my finger on the no no spot and watched it go from 5 bars down to 0 in a matter of seconds.
So what did I do then? I picked up my N900, looked at the bars and noticed 5. I then proceeded to put two hands around my phone covering as much surface area as possible and guess what? Nothing happened, the bars didn't move.
mother fuckers, soon thay will say that palm and samsung got the same screen so no one should come with problems and the camara is vga just like a reg. Motorola flip phone wtf is going on?
Unfortunately the S. Job's favorite phone only needs to be touched by a single finger for everything to turn to crap.
if your holding your phone like that, then your not making a call and you can barely touch the screen through your death grip, with that said, i agree with everyone else, this is a crap phone i expect it to do this, people are not waiting in 12hr lines to get the new N97 or any nokia for that matter. apples being a little kid trying to say, " well well billy did it too) two wrongs don't make a right steve.
its pathetic when politicians do this, its just as pathetic when a company has to point at others and say "look, they have the same problem". Man up and admit you messed up! That said my iPhone 4 works just fine
apple are mother fuckers soon thay will say that the reason why the screen is ugly is cuz it's not perfect and palm has the same problem soon the camara will be found with a 2mp resolotion and thay will say that the blackberrys and palms got the same whatelse apple?
Wow, what's next...does my Razer from five years ago suffer from death grip also?
Take some free advice, instead of telling everyone that you're working your asses off to fix the problem, I would suggest that you, Apple, instead of reaching every phone that may suffer from this phenomenon, just fix the damn phone or stop the production line and place a non-conductive coating over the antennae.
Its funny how they drag everyone else into this. lol! Fail!
But am i the only one who notices they like "CHOKE" the phones but when it gets to the iphone, they don't even pressure on it and it goes down! lol
Apple, you failed. I'm so glad i went away from my iphone/iphone 3gs and I
Oooh, a, "See! We're not the only ones who messed up!" argument. This sure seems like a sore way to go about this. Apple simply put too much magic in the iPhone this go around. Maybe it'd be best for them to leave the magic business up to Disney.
I somehow think the "LOOK WE'RE THE SAME AS THEM" strategy isn't the best move on Apple's part. Not that they won't sell millions of the things anyway...
My house has lousy Sprint coverage. I can make the Palm Pre drop a call if I hold it the right way. The antenna is on the bottom so it's hard not to attenuate the signal on the Pre.
So yes, if you are in a marginal area, any of these phones will drop the call after your hand attenuates the signal.
I think the point has been made. All phones have this problem. Youtube droid incredible and x too and see that they have this issue Still it might be too late as the iPhone already has this faulty antenna stigma. A couple of fellow workers are holding off upgrading until they change the design. I hope they can make it work the external antenna design work because the phone is absolutely beautiful.
@iPhone 4 so what is it? a common antenna issue? or a design issue? you seem to allude to both
note: the answer in the iPhone 4 case is BOTH...however they are strangling the sh!t out of or awkwardly holding these 'competing' products to reproduce a problem that only requires one touch in their case to lose 24 dB (which depending on your signal is enough to have you go from 5 - 1/0 or if it's strong from 5 - 5
@iPhone 4
There are two problems. What they are showing with the Nokia, HTC, etc. is simply radio waves being attenuated by the water in your hand.
In addition to this effect, you are able to couple the two antennas on the iPhone 4 with a simple touch. This makes you lose 99.5% of your power before you take into account additional attenuation from your hand.
The iPhone 4 seems to have a very good receiver actually, but this problem is NOT similar to what they are showing with other phones.
Force Choke.
awaiting lord vader's appearance.
*shakes head at Apple*
This happened on my Nokia E71 as well. It did drop calls because of it.
@IshimaruKenta
Bullshit.
@aubreyq
It's not bullshit, it's a legitimate issue. Get an E71 and hold it as you normally would, the signal drops to near nothing.
@MrFairladyz Exactly. One reason I hated that phone. Besides Symbian. :)
@MrFairladyz
I just tried giving my E71 the "deathgrip", did not even drop one bar...
@3me and your iPhone does what...?
The existence of http://www.apple.com/antenna/ is Apple's Joe McCarthy going after Fred Fisher moment.
Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?
So Apple Is Still Pointing Fingers?
also, so THAT'S why nokia came out with their "we prioritize antenna performance over design" guns blazing
I don't remember the internet getting lit up with death grip stories of other phones, apple. so even if the bars drop it must still be going thru.
If a cop pulls you over for speeding, pointing to everyone else and saying "well they are doing it too" doesn't save you from a ticket.
i"m in ur phonez,
droppin ur callz
Apple is getting desperate and continuing the underhanded dirty pool tactics. Funny Nokia didn't need a press conference to express how they suck and defend against a poor consumer report review all the while never apologizing.
This is sketchy at best. Apple needs to suck it up, admit they put out junk and fix it with a proper recall (not that it will save the iphone4 from continuing to be junk but lesser so). Instead they will struggle to make it look like other phones are junk when they're not and they just end up looking childish and stupid. Apple... this is getting tired. you messed up bad... let it go....
Apple is just embarrassing itself. They're a joke. Dragging everyone else down to their level is disgusting. Glad I don't any Apple shit, I'd be ashamed right now.
Ha.
I love you Apple
Way to shove it in their faces. The media has been completely ignoring the fact that their phones lose reception when they hold them.
Damn apple, you shame yourselves with your dirrrrty ways. oh just nasty.
It is true, i just tested this on my samsung mythic and when i hold it in a death grip with both hands, it goes from full bars to 1
Fuck Apple, seriously. The fact is Consumer Reports doesn't recommend the iPhone 4.
Pretty sure there's nothin' saying that CR doesn't recommend any of the phone mentioned in Apples propaganda.
