Archos 8 Home Tablet gets unboxed and examined
We've already gotten our hands on the Archos 7 Home Tablet, but the Archos 8 has been considerably harder to come by, and hasn't made much of a public showing since a brief appearance courtesy of the FCC back in May. The folks at Archos Lounge have now gotten their hands on the bezel tablet, however, and given us our first real look at the device. As you can probably tell from the form factor, this one is primarily designed to be used propped up on a table or a desk, but you can fold away the kickstand and do a bit of bezel-enhanced web browsing if you like. Head on past the break for Archos Lounge's video of both tablets -- en français, of course -- and look for the Archos 8 around the 11:20 mark.

Is it resistive?
@TheSunman89
In addition to being bezelaneous
@TheSunman89
That's a huge (bezel) bitch!
@TheSunman89
bezelzebub
@TheSunman89 That's what she said?
@jrm125
Behemoth!!
@angelusp Resolution is 800x600 4:3 aspect ratio screen, means more web browsing surface area and more Android icons. Google Marketplace can be installed using a hack, you can find it in the forums.
@TheSunman89 And the award for "Device with more bezel than screen" goes to...
@Luke Bezelpalooza!
Was that big of a bezel REALLY necessary?
@dotCARBON
holy bezel. that is stupid big. thumbs down i wouldnt buy anything with a bezel that big!
@dotCARBON: Its like I'm buying a Bezel that just so happens to run Android, its amazing
@dotCARBON Is that a bezel on your tablet or are you just happy to see me?
No...that doesn't work.
Hey, your bezel's so big that when it sits around the house, it sits a-r-o-u-n-d the house!
No...dumb.
Hey, how many bezels does it take to change a lightbulb?
OK...screw it...I give up.
@CRA1G
Bezelbub.
Thank you - I'll be here all night.
@dotCARBON : The bezel is made of chocolate. enjoy!
@dotCARBON
The bezel is just downright ridiculous. Makes me wonder sometimes who the hell the Creative Designers are and makes me wonder even more who the hell approves these things once seeing the prototype.
Who the hell they making these things for anyways?? Big handed, small-eyed giants?! FFS...
@Plazmic Flame For Home Use, kind of like an awesome Android/WIFi/videoplaying picture frame replacement, that's why they call it Home Tablet.
Big-Handed-Small-Eyed Giant says: "Yes! Finally!"
@dotCARBON
It would make a great picture frame/alarm clock, but you can get those for under $100.
@dotCARBON Sure. Gives you a place to hang all your sticky notes on.
It is in French...
@Keanedi
At the beginning, the guy from archos lounge explains why we can't compare the ipad and the archos 7 saying that the archos 7 and the ipad are both tablets, but, it's not the same price just like a renault clio and an aston martin...
During 10 mins it's a review of the archos 7 home tablet... The end is a review of the archos 8: it is said that the archos 8 is almost a archos 7 home tablet except that the screen is bigger( 8" ) and the screen resolution higher( 800*600 ). So the screen is resistive and it's still running android 1.5 cupcake...
Of course he said some other stuff but i don't think it's really interesting/relevant( more than that, the video is really long and i can't translate everything ).
I hope that helped you guys and that i didn't make toot much mistakes in english...
hang that up on a wall or something.
Bezel for the loss
porn in a photo frame awesome!
Archos like BB just die. Your stinking up the whole place with your garbage.
Which version of Android? I guess 1.5 or 1.6...
@Frasier i think its 0.3;)
Cmon, how hard is it to have smooth scrolling / transitions.
This is a little off topic, but that Skittles commercial was creepy.
And I thought the iPad's bezel was big.
@Eli Haj
Nevermind the bezel, I am more worried about the storage.
In this respect, there are still Archos devices that stomp all over anything Apple has to offer. Even iPad fans like a fat Archos (so long as they are even aware of the brand).
What a piece of garbage!! Who will buy this?
Wow how do you make love to that bezel?
Who designs this crap? No one wants a bezel that big. Look at how people complained about the iPad bezel and its way smaller than this
One thing I really dislike about Archoses are that they lack a real line-out port. In fact, way too many devices today lack real line-out ports. People are often amazed when, for example, I have them try the lineout from their iDevice into their car or speaker system's auxin rather than using the amplified headphone port. Even non-audiophiles are amazed at the improvement.
This is the Anti-Climax we've all been waiting for. They shouldn't call it a tablet, but Photo-Frame.
Little tiny screens with ginormous big bezels are all the rage, just like Derek Zoolander's tiny cell phone.
WOW! I thought the pic above was the 8 sitting on the table next to the box it came in. Screw that. And why is it taking so long to get any type of competition to the ipad? Ipad may have just come out but rumors have been flying around for a year now. Plenty of time to start competing!
It looks preposterous. Look at the top status bar. Why is it so freaking huge? Because Android is cell phone software.
Until Android 3.0 ships with proper tablet support it's simply foolish to waste your time with any Android tablet.
I'm sorry but, I cannot, in good conscience, purchase this item until moar bezel has been added. Pls, kthxbye.
Baby got bezel lol
I look forward to the day they just slap a screen into an 8'x4' piece of plywood. I mean let's just get crazy with that bezel, no need to hold back Archos.
Is that a Bezel in your pocket or are you glad to see me?
When I first saw this I stubbornly would not think that the bezel was the tablet. Maybe some awful stand, or maybe some freakish background thing and the tablet in front of it was the one in question. Seriously, that bezel is bigger than the 90's. I'm not even talking about 90's tech trends, it's bigger than the decade that was the 90's.
Archos is becoming the Sinclair or Amstrad of this decade: designing products with the goal of reaching a ridiculously low price point by cutting corners to the point of creating a useless product. Who remembers the Sinclair QL and its microdrives, the Amstrad 3" hard-format floppies, and the best of the lot, Sinclair's "revolutionary" electric car that ended up being not much more than a mobility scooter.
Unless they are marketing it as an android digital photo frame, that bezel is an certain way to ensure no one will ever buy it.
bezel, also
John Whorfin, that's a good point I think.
Honestly when I saw the topic title I thought.. ooh- maybe engadget had some sway with Archos and gave them some feedback from their recent "how would u improve archos 7?" article. But what I actually see is a poorly thought out product which just looks a whole lot less attractive than an ipad. Yeah the price is good but as John says, so many sacrafices.... it's very thin though, that's nice.
When you're taking on a product like the ipad (no small feat), I would consider it to be a serious serious undertaking and dedicate a lot of time and thought to it, but without being nasty, this feels a lot more like what would happen if an eastern electronics company came up with a clone.
I want to be impressed by a new archos player, I want to see 10mbps hd video (MKV), hdmi out, maybe bluetooth, 3d acceleration. But I'm losing faith to be honest.
