CTA announces PS3 Assault Rifle, dignity sold separately
CTA may be best known for its endless array of kid-friendly Wii accessories, but it's not forgetting about the grown-up gamers out there -- or, at least, grown-ups who enjoy shooting plastic guns in their living rooms. Its latest product is the $65 Assault Rifle for the PlayStation 3, which promises to add a whole new degree of "realism and excitement" to games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 -- oh, and it also makes sound effects even when you're not playing a game. Head on past the break for the video.
CTA Digital Offers Realistic Gaming Experience with First-Ever Assault Rifle Controller for PS3
With the first of its kind Assault Rifle Controller for the PlayStation 3 available for purchase, CTA Digital outfits serious gamers with the right accessory for realism and excitement during first-person shooter games. Fully compatible with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and other FPS games, the Assault Rifle Controller will take gaming to a new level.
BROOKLYN, NY – In the past, war games on the PlayStation 3 lacked that necessary bit of realism; namely, the feel of a rifle during simulated combat and the ability to shoot with the trigger. For the first time ever, PlayStation 3 gamers now have the perfect peripheral for battle with CTA Digital's newly- available Assault Rifle Controller, adding never-before realism to first-person shooter games.
With the look of an assault rifle and lightweight construction for ease of use, this accessory allows gamers to get down on the floor in full sniper pose and wreak havoc in their favorite first-person shooter games, including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and Call of Duty: World at War, and all other shooter games. Designed with modern warfare in mind, the Assault Rifle's trigger functions as the R1 button for realistic "reaction" game-play. Each OEM Sony PlayStation controller button is represented on the Assault Rifle, including the D-pad, PS button, start and select buttons, and clickable thumb sticks for strafing, running, steadying the weapon, and exploring the game environment. Gamers can pull the trigger with one hand and press the controller buttons with the other to shoot enemy combatants and move through the gaming environment. The Rifle comes with a removable scope and stock.
The Assault Rifle also features a built-in speaker with realistic sound effects that can be turned on and off for a fun game play experience. By pulling the trigger, the Rifle emits single shot, three-shot burst, and fully automatic sound effects to complement the on-screen action that can be activated even when the Rifle isn't synced with the PlayStation 3.
Setting up the Rifle is as easy as pushing a button. Gamers simply plug in the USB dongle key to their PlayStation 3 units, and then press the home button on the Rifle for wireless synchronization. Four LED lights display controller port selection.
The Rifle is powered with two AA batteries and has an on/off switch to conserve power. Each package includes the Assault Rifle controller, USB dongle key, scope, and stock. The Rifle itself is available at Amazon (http://tinyurl.com/38ha6oe) and many retail outlets. You can check out the video demo of the Assault rifle here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwxM11zYF2M).

engadget has been awfully slow behind the giz lately.....anyway, this thing is pointless without a move bulb....
@cdobsonwv Engadget is a myriad times classier, more credible and less biased than Gizmodo is any day.
@LANjackal
And he mentioned gizmodo where?
@cdobsonwv
Wow ... you visit more than one site?
So do I !!!
@DefPoet Words 7 and 8...."the giz" and he's referring to the fact that Gizmodo had this story up an hour and half ago. We all know this because when the Samsung vs Apple post came up, some of remembered that Gizmodo is less biased about Apple than Engadget is. Articles like produce real world results.
@DefPoet The "Giz" is gizmodo if you havent figured it out yet... fa...g.
@cdobsonwv
haha! for a second, here, CTA = Chicago Transit Authority
CTA promotes Assault Rifles ... just when you thought it was safe to ride the train again!
@cdobsonwv Yeah, this thing was announced a LONG time ago. I can't even tell you how long I've had it preordered
@LANjackal
Well, yes, but that also makes this site a bit boring. I dont know. Gizmodo is just more fun to read. Giz has personality. The personality can be annoying and tasteless at times, but at other times their snark can be brilliant and hilarious -that's the fun of it.
(Though I really got tired of the iphone drama after a while.)
This blog was fun for a while... but ever since the site redesign Engadget has just not been showing the personality that they used to. I go here first for news, but I would stay longer and participate more if Engadget got back on their game.
But i dont know, ive been having a bad day so I might just be cranky...
@zman So why not p!ss off back to gizmofo then, and stop annoying the rest us.
@LANjackal YES! agreed. giz has some interesting audio articles and that is literally the only reason i check their site anymore. LONG LIVE ENGADGET!
Time crisis. Ftw
@DefPoet this doesnt work like a time crysis controller, i dont think theres any gyroscopes or sensors or anything.
its just a controller in the shape of a gun.
@s13vin4t0r you'd like really stupid playing with that thing in your hand. Worst idea ever. Give me my PS3 controller and I'm happy!
@slickpaki Most of the time I am playing FPS games I am at my own home where it doesn't matter. You will look no less stupid using this than any Wii owner playing Wii sports, or any other game.
@XChrisX But it does NOT aim. Pointing the orange tip will NOT move your cross hairs. I think using the joysticks on that thing would be really difficult. Look how stiff he looks running around. So it is not like using the Wii pointing matters. You'd just be sitting on the couch with a gun in your hand hitting buttons and moving joysticks like usual.
@DefPoet I think this was made to help bridge the gap between actual guns and joysticks for our soldiers because we all know that in ten years we'll be doing all our killing with robots.
Wouldnt this make you a noob ?
@Brt312
I'll be using my night vision goggles with at at night, and I don't care if that makes me a newb.
@deliteguy
@deliteguy
Because night vision + tv = win?
@tobsmonster2
I like to do it on hardcore mode
What's the point of this? I mean, if it had Move integration I could see this being kind of cool. But that's just stupid.
@max3000 CTA only makes junk
Using an assault rifle is common knowledge in my country, well used to be at least. Now we instead trust the Russians to be a well behaving nation. Great move Sweden!
/2nd lieutenant Ingvaldson
@RoedeOrm
Actually it was pretty smart. The Russian army would steam roll Sweden. It is better to surrender, and wait for the UN to save you.
@RoedeOrm
Stand by for the "In Russia, rifle hold you" joke. He has not seen the article yet.
So wait you don't actually have to point this anywhere. It is just a regular PS3 controller made to look like a gun?!?
I'll stick with my frag fx
@glamajamma
Seriously, what's the point if you don't "actually" aim the gun?
He doesn't even aim at the TV during the demo?! Where's the fun?
I can't wait until I read all the articles about kids getting shot for carrying these around in public....
Maybe I'm getting old, but I used to read stories about that sort of thing when the laser tag game thing was popular in the late 80's.
@Rick James
Charles Darwin cares not for your post.
@rmbrown09
I think I should have clarified my point--I always thought it was a ridiculous scare tactic back in the 80's about how toy guns entice cops to kill kids that carry them in public.
@Rick James I think rmbrown09 meant that if any kid was stupid enough to bring those guns in public and get shot, they deserved it. Then the smarter kids would live on. Natural Selection.
@Rick James Totally.
For godsakes stay indoors with this thing, and if your doorbell rings, put it down before you answer.
.
Why do I need to pay $65 to look like a douche when I can do that for free?
wow, that was BFBC2. stand corrected.
PEW PEW PEW
This cant be for real?... how in anyway would this give me "the edge"?
@Sieg
@Sieg I dunno - maybe because you can now get away with a chicken wing? (This probably only makes sense to those of us who've had CQB training).
Was the gameplay in that video battlefield?
@That guy 2 He put a Battlefield disc into the PS
@HansImGlueck Yah I saw that, but I wasn't sure about the gameplay, sometimes companies confuse things, like when they show a palm pre in a commercial and show it running iPhone os, or iPhones SMS app, and have iPhone sound, stuff like that, and they did mention cod and battlefield, I've never played battlefield either, that's why I was asking
Just what we need, Chicago Transit Authority selling people more guns.
In essence its just an over-sized controller with poor button placement...way to go CTA...you continue to top yourselves.
I'll take one with a red dot scope or ACOG please. A silencer is also good but might limit the range too much.
Did anyone else notice that the guy couldn't aim with this oversized controller to save his life?
Lame. Doesn't track movement of the gun. No sale. Pointless peripheral.
Right at this moment there are two rich kids doing a little dance because they are going to buy this, interestingly enough those two rich kids have older brothers that purchased the Nintendo Power Glove.
