BlackBerry Bold 9780 caught on video running OS 6
This new Bold 9780 is really looking like the real deal, isn't it? The phone, which includes some ultra-minor aesthetic tweaks over the 9700, along with 512MB of RAM to handle the new BlackBerry 6 OS, has been described on paper, caught on camera, and now has gotten the requisite video walkthrough. The video, obtained by Driphter.com, includes some nice WebKit browsing, with fast page loads but some slightly sluggish scroll speeds. Of course, this is still pre-release software, so we'll see where we end up when BlackBerry 6 starts landing on these RAM-bumped devices for reals. Video is after the break.

any improvement is an improvement... no matter how small i still want it.
@vstican
yeah but wouldnt you rest easier knowing you have more than 512MB of RAM? not like its a huge deal...but its a good comfort
The guy doing the video reminds me of Danny McBride (Kenny Powers):

@vstican this is a good upgrade over 4.7 and 5.0 versions...I am eagerly waiting to get my hands on a Storm 3 or 9800 (=
@vstican
I'd hardly call this an improvement. Blackberry is lagging behind...
This is an excellent OS...designed for business users but with consumers in mind
@sky2earth
yep, its nothing crazy . but its much better than OS 5.
@sky2earth
Business users! Whatever. Pimps and drug dealers were doing business with monochrome flip phones and making millions back in the day before any of these smart phone ever existed.
@pspitts
They are now using BB and they sell their products to Android and iPhone users.
Screen Real Estate issue, regardless of OS
Each to his own, but I find that the high resolution of the Bold(s) means that video/web browsing is still comfortable, and the physical keyboard means that there is no pressing need to accommodate both content AND input on the same screen at the same time. That's one of my major gripes when it comes to on-screen keyboards, either you're fighting to see what you're typing as a whole, or you're struggling to press tiny on-screen keys.
@TheRealCJ Have fun scrolling left and right to read anything.
.... I hate my Curve.
I'm still kinda undewhelmed by Blackberry OS 6.
@SolidSnake
Sorry for the coming rant but I am curious:
Why?
What are they supposed to come up with?
Another grid of different looking icons?
Alienate their tens of millions strong base (like Microsoft did when they killed WinMob and went with a new UI) when RIM is still at the top and growing?
(side note: Microsoft literally killed the blackberries only business competitor and it is far from certain businesses will want to convert to Windows Phone 7. iPhones/Androids have gained little traction and have years to catch up to what security/admin features that Blackberries offer. Though I like what Microsoft is doing and they needed to do it with the losses because they were completely flat-lining, I think that it would be a huge mistake to mess with a completely new UI when blackberry is still extremely popular and sales are still growing)
The main problems they had were touchscreen versions capabilities (which 6.0 and the 9800 /Storm 3 seems to handle nicely) and browser (again 6.0 and new webkit browser). They have upgraded the media capabilities as well and streamlined/added the transitions (which can be done in 5.0 with themes, which I have made myself).
I think the problem here is that with many of the new features iOS4 is touting (e.g. partial multitasking/folders/wallpapers) are already done and done well on blackberries for years. There really is not much needed to actually add anymore.
They offer almost every single form factor/price point you can think of:
- small candybar (two different keypads)
- medium candybar
- large candybar
- flip
- vertical slider
- touchscreen
Horizontal keyboards are the only thing they don't offer and they are bringing out a tablet style (rumour still but likely).
The have a ton of features and choices, superior communication setup (BBM, Push, email, unified inbox etc.) and very secure and keep moving forward.
@RedGhost BB sales are grown? From WHO? Every chart I see shows them getting killed in market share (as far as change). So if they are "growing" it's at so much a slower pace than the rest of the market that they might as well be shinking.
I honest don't know ANYONE with a BB other than those who have them as mandated by work/IT depts. I don't know anyone that has one that wouldn't rather have another phone.
@CodyTech
"killed in market share"
These figures seem to disagree with you:
US market share:
http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/comscore-reports-may-2010-us-mobile-subscriber-market-share-98031904.html
(BTW, top mobile content usage: "Sent text message to another phone" at 65%, more than double the number for #2, "web browsing".)
Global market share:
http://www.fiercemobilecontent.com/press-releases/global-smartphone-shipments-jump-43-60-million-units-q2-2010
(Year-over-year growth for RIM was 40%; global industry growth was 43%. Is that the "much slower pace" and "sinking" you are talking about?)
Now, what are your sources?
@CodyTech
"BB sales are grown? From WHO? Every chart I see shows them getting killed in market share (as far as change). "
Total handsets: +0.5% in US as of May 2010 and Blackberry now in top 5 (including dumbphones!). Only down 0.4% US smartphone marketshare in a quarter where all but Android loss more, and a quarter in which no new blackberries were released. BlackBerry subscriber account base grew 65% over the prior fiscal year to over 41 million, with a record 4.9 million net new subscriber accounts added in Q4. BlackBerry smartphone shipments grew more than 40% over the prior fiscal year to 37 million. This is not getting killed, especially when you haven't released a new model.
"I honest don't know ANYONE with a BB other than those who have them as mandated by work/IT depts. I don't know anyone that has one that wouldn't rather have another phone."
The plural of anecdote is not data.
@RedGhost YOu make a great point, changed my perspective a lil bit. This won't make me switch back to Blackberry anytime soon, but you are right don't alienate your base and hey I bet the battery lasts all day w/o all the widgets constantly running and the 1ghz snapdragon that my incredible has.
@RedGhost : You must have missed the parts in the news about how Windows Mobile 6.5 will still be sold alongside WP7, for obvious business reasons.
Looks alright I'd buy if didn't like what I already have
Blackberry finally get updated :-P
Same thing different name!
Crap!
I literally fell asleep watching this.
@tbhuang2 Not the only one
Same thing , different name!
Crapberry!
Booorrring....
Crickets
Looks very nice. All these things that should have been done at least a year ago... Though, after dumping my BB for the Droid X, this doesn't really amuse me. Web browsing seems pretty lame to me. Also, apps are still lagging and aren't improving yet. It's nice to see that I am not the only person who is leaving Blackberry for Android and having no regrets nor miss anything about it.
@lilfleck I've been wondering how many bis account deactivations since the evo, droids, and new iphone were announced. I don't get caught up in fanboy wars but I'm curious if blackberry is the one who is actually losing the battle. Former owner of two blackberrys and two winmo phones, android now.
@lilfleck
I left BB for Android as well.
Any idea whether older devices will be upgradeable?
@Richiban If you can find a way to upgrade them to 512mb of RAM, sure.
Tabs Browsing just made the internet experience much better!
You know, as much as I appreciate leaks and whatnot, I would hate to be the company whose product is being leaked. But oh well, if it helps build excitement then you can't really argue then
I think this looks like a vast improvement on the old OS, just wondering whether or not Bold 9700 users will get the upgrade - fingers crossed!
Absolutely unappealing.
Definitely agree with dude who said screen real estate issue. This is a horrible form factor. Portrait slider or slate FTW. This fucking blows.
its brings a change without forgetting its roots.
Sigh.....no thanks.
RIM should spin off a new line of phones. BlackBerry for their corporate customers and DroidBerry for the consumer market.
iPhone killer.
The previous OS must really suck.
LOL
Blackberry has one major for any power user.... The browser blows. The latest BB's screen is so crisp and clear. Bright! Keyboard arguably one of the best ever. Even plays movies awesome. Nice headphones.(decent) One of yhe better batteries. But the browser blows! Please work on that so I can open up a link in my email while in the airport without looking for a dull knife to slit my wrist please. But great phone. :-)
@Justatecfan
Even plays movies awesome.
@Justatecfan The new browser is webkit like iPhone and Android and beats them in performance tests.
The OSberry 6 looks very neat.
Does Blackberry rock the app world?
That looks pretty good to me. It's interesting to compare the touch version of the OS (on the 9800 video a while ago) to the non-touch version (this). Seems to translate pretty well. And it looks pretty fast and responsive.
As someone who wants a hardware keyboard, be it a slider or just a bar like this... I'm interested.
Can't wait to upgrade. After trying out Droid for a few days, I am passing and will get an OS6 Slider.
slow web page draw is slow.
the biggest improvements seem to be OS-side, not browser side.
that's ok, hopefully new API tools allow for new version of bolt, opera etc to be better and better
Every blackberry looks the same. Other than the storm which is junk btw. It's crazy how bb used to be really cool. It's just not anymore. It's just really really boring.
