Official: HTC rolling out Android 2.2, 720p video, iTunes sync to unlocked Euro Desires this weekend
We've just heard directly from HTC regarding that hotly anticipated upgrade to Android 2.2: it's happening this weekend for lucky Euroland owners of the Desire. Provided your Sense-laden 3.7-incher is not carrier-locked, you should be receiving your serving of Froyo by the end of the week, together with a new 720p video mode and iTunes sync for your music. HTC is also throwing in its App Share widget that it first introduced with the Wildfire, along with its smart Caller ID feature. Very nice, though it's quite a shame that operator-specific versions of the update are still stuck in testing and are expected "in several weeks' time." Ah well, guess that'll teach us to buy our gear unlocked.
Update: Owners of unlocked Desires around Europe (and for that matter, the world) have informed us that OTA Froyo is being dished out in earnest. Enjoy!

"The Android 2.2 (FroYo) update for HTC Desire will start rolling out across Europe this weekend. As well as including the complete set of Android 2.2 features, the update will contain a few special additions of our own through the latest iteration of HTC Sense. The update will provide 720p video capture, HTC's App Share widget, as well as our enhanced HTC Caller ID, and improved multi-language keyboard. Also, through the update, HTC Sync will allow HTC Desire users to sync their music with iTunes.
HTC Desire users will be notified that the over-the-air update is available to download when their phone automatically checks for software updates. The update won't delete any of the phone's content. However, due to the size of the update, we would advise using a WiFi connection to download it wherever possible to avoid additional data charges.
This update will initially roll out to unlocked HTC Desire handsets. Operator specific versions of the update are undergoing testing and we expect to make them available in several weeks' time."

Brilliant. Yay for performance boost.
@fpad77 Also. Cue a ton more androids with super fast javascript performance and flash player. Android will show 'em how to surf the internet the right way.
@fpad77 fuck yeah, right after my trip to japan!
can't wait, now we can have also some awesome cooked roms with native froyo, just have to wait for kernel source code release!
@fpad77
I've been waiting for this for a while!
Is anyone else surprised at the 'HTC Desire owners can now sync their music with iTunes'. Does Apple know about this?
@fpad77
HTC and Google: We Nexus 1 owners want 720p video recording, remember Nexus 1 hardware is the same as HTC Desire, dont let us down.
@fpad77
Nokia N8 still wins regarding performance and design!!! hdmi 720 mkv 12mpg camera.... etc....
plus holding anyway you want
@fpad77 first person to actually receive the update reply high up.
@Lucky Businessman Each to their own! (You're in the wrong post)
@Lucky Businessman because tv out on a phone is necessary...
Not to mention useful...oh and practical...
[/sarcasm]
@fpad77 I got this from HTC ... they do not seem to mention starting from this week-end!
We expect to begin rolling out the Android 2.2 update for your HTC Desire very soon. We cannot be more specific yet as exact dates still need to be confirmed. We look forward to rolling out update to your phone very soon. Regarding if your phone is unlock/unbranded based both on serial number and ROM version you do indeed have an unbranded Desire.
@bL4Ck
Is that you Hina?
@jizkidjnr
It's pretty cool as a tiny little snes hooked up to your tv. -_-
@lookseehear
I wonder if it will be like WebOS vs iTunes again..
HTC please send some devices over Canada. I don't want to wake up tomorro and go to an Apple store. I need a phone so badly!!
@tractor Apple and HTC both have no idea what you're going on aboot
@fpad77 forget froyo, are these android phone in 2010 getting gingerbread, and if so when? FRAGMENTATION is a bi+
@Megazine
You mean the kind of fragmentation where the original iphone doesn't get iOS4, or the kind where the iphone 3G doesn't get multitasking and its performance goes down the tubes?
@Beatnik
HTC did not confirm this - their customer services gave me answer below!

@wraith404 Why don't you go install windows 7 on your 386.
@Megazine Pleb. Haha.
@wraith404
That's not fragmentation, that's a fact of life
@Hmm I'm wondering that too...
@wraith404 Still better to have a update with new features then having none right, right? 2year old phone (3G) at least got a update. Will these 2010 android phone get updates that come out withinh a year (gingerbread) of the phones launch or will they have to wait 6-10 monthes after the release of a update? I think not, but maybe.
I hope my cousins incredible get the gingerbread cuz he's already behind on the froyo.
@bl A++ would read again!
@lookseehear I'm not sure. If they pulled a palm pre you can expect that loophole to be closed pronto.
It's ok. Android users generally hate iTunes and would prefer manual transfer of songs anyway.
@wolfticket II
You deserve a noble peace prize (or whoever thought of it). I didn't even think of that. The evo functions as a psx, snes,nes, genesis, and gameboy by combining the emulator with the hdmi.
@tractor Should have bought the Nexus One online when you had the chance! One of the technical support guys at Telus said they were getting a ton more HTC phones in the coming months. I get the feeling they are trying to be the Verizon to Roger's AT&T.
IT'S HERE :D
I have it - Came over the air here in Denmark at 14:10!
Wooopwoopwooop!
let the Froyo love BEGIN.. The Android family is growing.
@neeko18
Android family?
That sounds a lot like the terminology Apple frequently uses for it's "community".
@GenericPoster I'm pretty sure he's using in the context of many devices (individuals) branching off from the same family (android) growing up; as opposed to 'clone'.
@fpad77 correct. I have a feeling once froyo is on most phones Android devices will double..
@neeko18
Froyo love began a long time ago, where have you been?
@GenericPoster By 'family' they mean of phones. The iPhone is an only-child.
@cjheechul I've been using a evo with 2.1 .Froyo is new to me. Just flashed a semi Froyo rom on my phone last weekend.
@DizWhiz Ya that's cus it works. Don't need to make a new model every other week to try to keep sales up.
@neeko18
Okay, so from what I can contextualise from your post:
"Just flashed a semi, let the froyo love begin! Family will double!"
... I'm a bad person.
Well, that'll solve the trouble of making any plans for the weekend! I'll be sitting inside hitting the "Check now" button under system updates every 5 minutes...
How nice for them to add the 720p recording also. \o/
Yeah me too! Been checking for last day already. Though I'm not certain I'm on the list with my unlocked Desire used in New Zealand sourced from some other unknown country (documentation in German but starts up with t mobile logo but nothing else from carrier). Keeping my fingers crossed... when not hitting the check updates button!
Few weeks ? I wonder if it will work if the phone is unlocked. If you tell carriers you are taking the phone overseas, they generally unlock it for you.
@Bervick
I don't think it's about it being locked or not, it's about the rom including any branding (I believe Orange are one of the worst for this, changing icons for browser etc).
If you have rooted your phone and have an unbranded stock 2.1 rom I imagine you would be able to update this weekend regardless of who your network is.
Good for owners. I sold mine after a month as I was slightly underwelmed by the speakers, video recording and playback and some other things.
I thought if THC did it like they did with the Hero I'd have to wait 1 year before they deliver Froyo or the promised 720p but it seems they were faster this time. How about Divx playback, that was anounced too?
Anyway, I'm happy now with the Samsung Wave.
@Geozec
I enjoy pie
@Geozec If you want divx playback there are apps for that :D
@Houly
On Anroid? When I had the Desire there were none- at least I couldn't find them.
@Geozec
RockPlayer for one.
@Tes
I see. That seems to be still beta and wasn't around when I had the Desire in May. Good to see they are making progress.
The player looks a lot like the one on my Samsung Wave hmmm...
@Geozec
THC? Interesting typo...
Confucius say :
Froyo on HTC like whipped cream on BIG TITTY.
@Bervick My wife has big tits and I have HTC DESIRE, so my world is complete, now where did I put that cream
