I think a 7" screen is the ideal size for a tablet. Also the screen looks to have a widescreen format which is a bonus. Why any company would make a media device without a widescreen makes no sense to me.
Put in 9.7" for 4:3 (similar to iPad) and 7" for the 16:9 screen (similar to this device). Even when viewing widescreen material the 9.7" 4:3 screen gives you more viewing area than the 7" 16:9 screen.

It apparently doesn't make sense to any manufacturer either because we have not seen 1 media player with a square screen. Non-issue
@Teerim The iPad has a squarish screen. It might not be exactly a 4:3 ratio like an old tube TV but it's close.
