'The Shack' downsizes, opens Bullseye Mobile kiosks in many Target stores
Radio Shack is at it again, expanding your perceptions of the place that once actually sold radio components. A year after that ill-received 'The Shack' marketing campaign the company is now making a rather more substantial move, securing an arrangement with Target stores to see the creation of so-called Bullseye Mobile kiosks. This has started with a 100-store pilot program but, throughout this year and into summer next, the expectation is to prop them up in 1,750 big box locations. Something tells us they won't all be wired up for WiMAX, but we can hope.

Good move IMO
@ok Android looks ugly
I never said I was hoping for wimax, I think it's a good move because now if you want electronics you go to Best Buy. Tons of people go to Target though for lots of different things, and I think the Shack will get more business there than their current stand-alone stores.

LTE is not out yet, Sprint has a great network, and the Evo is a great phone, but being a troll you probably knew all that
@ok Android looks ugly
Like everything else, it depends where you live. Where I live, Sprint is okay... but the best coverage is T-mobile. Which I will never understand. Still, you do sound kind of trollish and negative about everything.
@ok Android looks ugly lol... Right. T-Mobile has the worst network nationwide. Maybe Sprint is bad in your area, but in some areas (San Fran, for one) Sprint is the best.
As for this article, what the hell is with the title? Radio Shack isn't downsizing. Why in the hell would you use that word? This site gets worse every day.
@ok Android looks ugly Whatever. I can drive from Minneapolis to Chicago and have 3G all the way on that trip with one 5 minute drop to edge in the middle of WI. Sprint has the most robust, while still affordable, network on the market.
@ok Android looks ugly Obvious troll is obvious.
@ok Android looks ugly Yah the best edge coverage. There is a reason they are hiring engineering firms left and right with a stupidly aggressive rollout plan. The simple fact is their network sucks ass for anything other then 2G/Edge
@ok Android looks ugly
You're an idiot.
Sent from my HTC EVO 4g, bitch
@ok Android looks ugly CAN SOMEONE JUST BAN THIS USER PLEASE
@ok Android looks ugly The best coverage WHERE I LIVE. Unless you live in the same city as me, I think we've discovered a problem with you saying who does and doesn't have the worst coverage.
@ok Android looks ugly
"the vocal minority of complainers on blogs"
Dude, what the hell do you think you are. Even though you are just one person, I suppose if we counted all your banned accounts you could be considered a minority.
@Everyone that just replied
Last time I checked, this article was about Radio Shack and Target, not a Q & A about which network is the best. I swear, it doesn't matter what the article on engadget is actually about, it always turns into an argument between either different network users or different mobile OS users. Just because we have different opinions doesn't mean we have to force them down other peoples throats at any chance possible. This makes both parties look either arrogant or ignorant and robs the rest of the readers of worthwhile comments that are actually relevant to the topic they selected. If we wanted to see a virtual temper tantrum, we would go to an article that has something to do with apple.
Hey! Lets put a shack in Block Buster, oh wait never mind.. already tried that..
Radio Shack known as Tandy in England sold out to Carphone Warehouse years back. Since then CPW has become a massive company selling cellphones. So Tandy may have woken up! Not sure Target is a good partner though. When I worked for Tandy aka Radio Shack found them to be lacking in motivation to realise their full potential as retailers only interested it seems in cash before image.
What exactly do these kiosks offer?
@Chopes
I think it's cell phones.
@Chopes Hopefully not a shacking service.
@Chopes
Even the CEO isn't really sure.

@shaynes I feel sad for that ceo... ;)
The stores are already the size of a shack. What's smaller than a freakin shack? The Radio Shed?
@engadgetcomexcludeengadget
The Radio Shack
The Radio Shed
The Radio Closet
The Radio Cupboard
The Radio Shelf
The Radio Case
The Radio Cradle
The Radio
The iRadio
@shishi
Wow, this just game me a great insight into iPhone 5...it will come with a revolutionary and magical feature called iRadio, the first of its kind for smartphones...
@engadgetcomexcludeengadget
yeah, there getting smaller, and I couldn't find the limit switches when it was bigger.
a more on topic comment, it should be called Radio Room
@kapanak iPhone trolling on a post about Radio Shack? Really? Stupid troll is stupid.
i used to love the shack, but now not so much. plus does this mean the shack is getting taken over by whomever owns target?
@keeb I agree. I used to love Radio Shack back when they served a purpose. I was a kid in the 80s. I went there for speaker wire, connectors of just about any sort, and whatever else I needed for stereo gear.
Those days are gone. Radio Shack failed to evolve. What they needed had nothing to do with a marketing campaign. They needed a reason for consumers to go there.
I can't think of anything Radio Shack sells that I wouldn't look for somewhere else first.
Without a reason to go to Radio Shack as a first option, why would consumers go there at all? THAT'S why they're struggling.
@A Yam Whuddayam where i grew up at in the 90s they had one where they had all of that stuff. and i loved it. it sparked an interest in me in working on electronics and now when i do go into one i feel let down. at least theres a frys electronics nearby and i dont have to go to be$t but.
@keeb Target owns Target.
@keeb Nope the wireless kiosk in Target are going to be own by Radioshack. There just going to be partners. Radioshack already own all of the sprint labeled kiosk in Sam club and same goes for a lot of kiosk's in malls around the country.
I also agree that Radioshack is a dying brand (this coming from a current employee) but they want to be known as a place to get your Wireless(cell phones). They actually sale more phone then anyone include bestbuy and walmart.
@brant09 now that i did not know. i just hope they finally fail altogether or get back to what made them a success.
@A Yam Whuddayam I was just in a radio shack the other day to get connectors for a stereo. the older guy behind the counter was pushing cell phones on me so much.. It was kind of pathetic
i live exactly 2 minutes from a radio shack and the monoprice hub. if i want a cable today i can pay 35 bucks for it at radio shack or wait till tomorrow and pick it up at monoprice for $1.50.
Yeah does it mean I can us my discount on an evo I already get 20% my monthly bill
Hmm. I've been in Radio Shack about 5 times in the last 2 months. I have been the lone "customer" 4 of 5 trips, with the one exception not finding what he needed. This will give them much more face time than they are getting now. Guaranteed.
Yeap good idea for Radio shack to open kiosks in Target, bravo! Lots of foot traffic.
From crappy customer service at the Shake to crappy customer service at Target. Well at least its not walmart I suppose.
@giulio
Walmart smocks have a device in them that turn workers into absolute a-holes. I asked a worker politely where the batteries were, she turned around, scowled at me and said, "I'm on BREAK."
@giulio Umm please. Just because the target you go to has issues doesn't mean all of them do. I go to about a dozen of them around the Minneapolis metro and they all have perfectly fine customer service. Unlike wally world who treat their employees like cattle and it show when you talk with them.
@John Doe
He said Walmart...
Ya this is known already: http://fonefrenzy.com/2009/10/06/bullseye-mobile-solutions-by-radio-shack-launches-kiosks-inside-target-stores-nationwide/
Radio Shack, The Shack who gives a rat's ass. They are the worst in customer service. Just a bunch of fucking young fucks with no class. I hope that company folds up like The Sharper Image.
@pspitts
Hey, i work at rs and I'm in HS and i do my job well and i give a shit about my customers experience. I'm quite knowledgeable.
Just like with anything at target, you can just go to wallmart and get the exact same item, but for cheaper!
@RChusid Yeah... but then you're buying from the oppressive small town economy obliterating, employee medicare forcing, peasant insurance policy buying, satanic force that is Wal-Mart. I'm willing to pay a premium not to buy from them.
@Dogen Funny, when I went to Wal-Mart to apply for a part-time job, I had to wait in line for 10 min. behind other people who lining up to be oppressed. Do you really think in 2010 that it would be feasible for every town to have it's own "Department Store". And what kind of ins. would they offer with less than 50 employees? You'd be on here bragging how you buy everything online. "Mr. Jones, how come this package of socks is 50 cents more than the Two Guys store in Bristol? 'Well, Two Guys has 3 stores so they can order more socks and they pays less" Here we go again!
Just sell the shack to target and be done with it
I could see that they will close some regular RadioShack stores down if this trend contiues.
RadioShack once a mighty owner of Tandy and Computer City,
redused to a cellphone kiosk inside a Target.
radioshack is having an identity crisis. i think they should just sell all of its share or merge with blockbuster, both dying company and call themselves, Shackster or something. overpriced bullshit caused the company this.
Haha today is the first time in a long time I purchased anything at the shack. The Evo 4g is quite sexy.
