Windows Phone 7 coming to Europe in October, US in November, according to Microsoft COO (video)
Here's something that seems to have slipped the net from Kevin Turner's recent presentation on Windows Phone 7 devices. While discussing the move to Microsoft's next great hope in the mobile space, the Redmond COO told the world that the transition is expected to happen in the October timeframe across Europe, and in the November timeframe in the US. This is the most explicit anyone from Microsoft has been about the likely launch date for Windows Phone 7, and sets up the intriguing potentiality of Europeans getting to savor the goodness of the brand new OS ahead of their US brethren. See Kevin dishing the info on video after the break.

i dont love microsoft really. i own a ps3 first off. so i kind of dislike that it is going to be xbox live on the phone, but otherwise i just want that phone so badly. also, i bought a zune hd, and i love it, so it would be an easy transition to windows phone 7.
That doesn't make sense, the American market should ALWAYS be the main priority for any international company like Microsoft. European and Asian markets are second-rate.
@Giovanni6
That is so arrogant. Anyway I'm glad that something comes out here first for a change.
Its never to late, and for the masses the name is a great idea...... Windows 7 has been selling like hot cakes 10 a sec since it was released... Wait here comes a new phone Windows Phone 7.. and yes it works perfectly with Windows 7.. Ill have to buy that...
@Danj67
There is one problem with that though, Windows 7 and WP7 have pretty much zero in common. Right down to the Kernel, these are two completely separate architectures and software for each has to be written independently. There is no possibility of simple technology migration from one to the other, it takes a complete re-write from the ground up. In contrast, iOS and OS X don't have that problem as the software is basically the same right down to the Kernel. That's why Apple can very quickly innovate and advance both platforms by cross-migrating technologies with minimal effort from one to the other. Google doesn't develop Android as a desktop OS so they just have to worry about Smart Phones. But then again, they chose JAVA as the foundation of their OS so that's another limiting problem all on its own. Palm just took the quick route and went straight to a Linux Kernel and web apps but that turned out to not work so well. RIM's BB OS is also JAVA and as we know that's pretty much going nowhere fast. And Nokia.... they've tripped and fell face first at the start line (MeeGo?) they're just wandering around lost and confused.
@Nike10010100
How many people who buy smart phones or own computers be it mac or PC even know what a Kernel is?
Im betting the masses are going to see WP7 and relate it to Windows 7..
@Nike10010100
The Silverlight framework I am writing executes in Windows, Mac and WP7 with absolutely no changes in my core code. (To be fair, there are some very minor platform specific bits, but those are there to handle touch input vs keyboard/mouse input)
Most of the assertions you've made are relevant only to platforms that require native-code in their deployments.
When your development platform is based on managed code such as .Net and Java, those kernel specific things get abstracted away. And especially if the application is JIT compiled (rather than interpretted on a VM), you get some gains in code optimization at runtime based on your current memory situation, etc. Not sure if Microsoft is doing that yet in WP7, but it's certainly something they can do (and have done on the desktop)
Can someone please tell Microsoft that people would want this on a tablet more than windows 7. They will also sell more. Don't squander the beautiful UI like you did with the Zune.
@jek sqaunder the UI like the zune? are you implying that the UI is bad? and windows 7 tablet would be better
@flett No I'm saying the opposite. The Zune UI is awesome, way better than the ipod. I'm saying that they squandered it because they didn't advertise the crap out of it to show people that there was something else out there besides the ipod. I'm really looking forward to the windows phone, it's gorgeous. It's forward thinking and modern while apple is just rehashing the old because they can. The problem is that it sounds like Microsoft wants to put win7 on tablets rather than the win-phone UI. I think this is a mistake. They will sell way more with windows phone on them and people may even spread the word if it's as cool as it looks.
The more I see how nice looking the UI on WP7 looks, the more I think that I can keep up with apple and android in the market. Whats going to be the deciding factors are:
A) Will the networks mass market the devices
B) Will they gets the same number of apps
I have a Pre Plus, and by all accounts its a great phone. But the main reason Palm had to sell itself to HP was because they didnt get the privilege of the above points. Heres hoping that MP7 does well, because even if I get an android phone next, competition makes all companies better.
This guy looks like the Security guard in Terminator 2
@Bacon Destroyer
Any more obscure references? Maybe the chick in the Polka Dot Door?
@Bacon Destroyer
ha ha - he really does, doesn't he!
This video looks like it was in the WPC 2010...which was more than 2 weeks ago. Why is it here only now?
@Trang Exactly my point: http://twitter.com/techSage/status/18624561326
Europe first? WTF? The US is your home market.
Old news to those who aren't afraid or aren't too brainwashed to pay attention to what Microsoft is doing: http://twitter.com/techSage/status/18624561326
I don't think it's too late for MS as the industry is constantly changing but they need a serious ad campaign blitz ASAP. The fact that it's delayed isn't helping
Bloody Hell!! Europe gets it first? Bullocks!
JK. The Version I want probably won't be out until 2011 anyway. WP7, HTC, KB like TP2.
I'm not going to lie I like Microsoft (MSFT Research stand up) but Kevin Turner needs to get over his addiction of having his foot in his mouth (not healthy) also I always thought they should go outside the US market to get some traction
Wow. That is one dog ugly suit. Do you really buy a phone from a guy that looks like a sleazy car salesman? Really?
phone makers are made in eu and asia first so theyre shipped to stores faster. we dont even have factories here. everything is made in foxcon nowadays.
WTF why??
I hate how Europe gets all the goods earlier than us.
Ill be picking one up in Nov. Yes!
They are launching in Europe as it is a much SMALLER market than the US ... they will launch in just few countries that are smaller than most of our states here in the US ... it's easier to troubleshoot a smaller market ... plus Microsoft tends to ignore Europe with mobile stuff ...
... and i checked ... the United States IS the center of the universe ... george W bush drew me a map in crayon showing me ... along with cowboys riding dinosaurs
@darthgault
Actually, they launch in Europe first probably because it's easier as they may not have to wait for the carriers to scrutiny and neuter the OS first.
Can someone let this guy know that the 70's and 80's are long gone........................... =/
Its 2010!!
After spending millions of dollars developing and killing the Microsoft Kin, they’re going to push through with this? I hope one of these Windows Phone 7 babies land in http://www.hot.com.au/
Why are these guys stuck in 80's garb. Dang.
Hey - is it me or does this guy look like the security guard in T2 that gets the spike through his bonce...
Wow, Europe gets it before US? WTF? Why the discrepancy? Are we waiting for our carriers to neuter it?
That is one horrible suit.
I m waiting for it, lets see what happens :)
really hope for the Heat to rise up again!
I have been following the developments closely and will be getting one.
Super fluid , polished U.I. standardized chassis , front facing cams all the good stuff.
Plus it is innovative...not just icons on a grid !
Frak! I really need to get a phone before November especially if it turns out to be late November. I was really hoping for a late September/early October launch for the US. I don't think that I can wait that long especially since I don't know if it's going to be any good or not.
So who gets my money, Apple or Samsung? Broken antenna or broken GPS? Sad face.
I was a doubter, I just thought that MS had left it too long. Apple is slaying, Google is slaying, RIM is doing its thing.. whats the point?
Now I'm starting to change my mind. MS "NEEDS" this to happen. To the point that they're probably more willing to take more of a loss on the project than the Xbox.
The other thing is that it's all about the carriers. If it's true that AT&T have committed to buying 8 million Wp7's then it will be big. MS understand partnerships and sales channels more than anyone. I just think they're gonna force it through, and the phones will be subsidized so much so that the carriers/phone shops make more money than on the equivallent Android phone.
MS are clearly going after Android not Apple. Apple will always end up with a smaller percentage of any market over time. Simply because they're hardware manufacturers first and foremost, not software people. What hardware company have you ever heard of to have 90% of a market over the long run? Sony? Phillips? Panasonic? Hardware companies just dont work like that. They dont do monopolies. Thats why the whole android vs apple thing is bullshit. Apple were never going to have the most market share in cell phones. But they are always gonna be the most profitable company in their space. That's what they like.
I dont think google are good partners for tech firms. They go too fast, and cut firms dry pretty quickly. They aren't honorable (who's ever heard of a dude sitting on the board of a company and then produce a competing product in the next breath.. crazy).
MS on the other hand are very partner friendly and believe in the eco-system model. I think they're gonna make it work...
In Europe first, just in case things go badly, and they can fix it ahead of the US release?
I guess I can wait a couple of weeks and read about the Eurpoean models before they hit the streets here in the US.
The other side of the world is finally getting Zune through this so getting the phones first must be like an apology...
Don't want to wait a month. Invade Europe NOW.
somebody i won't say who, but somebody needs their suit jacket tailored really really badly.
I'm getting one. Metro FTW.
just gotta say...that is one disgusting suit, he looks like a ball of caramel.
The thing with WP7 is that most people, specially those gadget-oriented, will be looking at not just the OS itself but also at the actual phones in which the OS will come. So regardless of when the OS finally debuts, at the end it will come down to when a particular phone manufacturer will release a particular phone model that people will want. Because WP7 is just the software and the experience will be almost the same for everybody, what will make yours stand out from the rest will be your choice of hardware.
I for one am planning on getting either a Dell or an HTC WP7 phone, and it will have to be on Verizon since I'm not about to break my contract and switch carriers. So I'm getting WP7 when those conditions are met, which could very well be in 2011.
Well this works out well for me =)
Living in Australia.....
so anyway, where are all the people that poured so much hate on the iPhone when it didn't have copy/paste? Shouldn't those people be doing the same to WP7?
This is easy:
1. Buy either Android/iPhone now since app market is mature (iPhone for games), then
2. Buy WP7 in 1 year when they get past v1.0 and have a more mature market, unless you want to continue with Android or iPhone
The big question is: Can there be more than 2 dominant smart phones? Will this be similar to PC-Mac wars with Linux a distant third?
Microsoft knows they need to win big with WP7 in the US. By relelasing it in the UK a month early will allow them time to work out any glitches or kinks. I don't mind waiting another month or so for a solid OS.
Honestly not having copy/paste isn't that big of a deal. I'm so sick of hearing people complain about it. Sure it's nice to have but I only use it like 3X a month. And this is usually when I am copying a phone number. Since WP7 OS already has phone number recognition built in, I doubt I will miss it much. URL hyperlinks is obviously built in, and I belive contact name recognition is built in too. So most regular users won't miss it that much.
