Motorola-Verizon tablet will have FiOS TV, ten-inch screen?
Sure, we've heard Verizon discuss Android tablets once or twice, but it's just now that we're getting our first real juice about Motorola's companion device. The Financial Times reports that Verizon and Motorola are teaming up on an Android tablet with dual cameras, Adobe Flash support and a ten-inch screen, plus mobile hotspot functionality (which implies Verizon cellular data) and -- get this -- access to pay TV. As it so happens, Moto makes a Verizon FiOS set-top box, and sources tell the Times that the television tablet may get grandfathered in to the very same technology. No word on processing power or price, but the rumor mill says we could see it as early as fall of this year. And given the timing, here's hoping the Android inside will have some Google TV mojo, too.

Will Buy!
@DaHarder Would totally be interested if Verizon would get off their arses and get fios in my neighborhood. I am dying to get away from cable.
@DaHarder http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLnWf1sQkjY
@DaHarder the next Generation of DOES!
@DaHarder Yeah I hope this is true. Fios would make this great competition 2 the Ipad
@DaHarder
I love Motorola and their shitty phones. They are just what the marketplace needs to keep the other manufacturers on their toes in order to make actually well-designed products.
@Engrudget Oh so true. I mean the original Droid and Droid X were just the worse devices I've ever seen...
/s
@DaHarder Droid Tablet? This sounds like a good idea but they need good partners and developers to be successful, and also get ready for a $100 million ad campaign like with the original droid...
@Engrudget Garrrgggghhhh, you get em' told grudget... 8-)
@EggoEspada not true. I'm on the Droid right now. It is much better than iPhone 3gs.
Me to!
@liftedngifted1
Why? All you need to sell a good tablet is a good Android build, and a usable tablet. Honestly, what would be wrong with a Droid X that was 10-inches, worked as a mobile hotspot, and had FLO TV? And partners??? How about all the websites running Flash that Apple ignores? There are your partners right there. I'm loving this, and I have a feeling that plenty of others will too.
@DaHarder
If it's an Android tablet, this could be the big one you've been waiting for!!!!!
@liftedngifted1
As it currently stands, Motorola's initial investment in creating the DROID brand will go a long way in lending this 'new device' a degree of credibility before it ever actually goes on sale, so a few well-placed leaks (like this one), and a few DROID-themed ads/commercials will make this a sure-fire desirable gadget for the holidays.
Android, as a solid/viable mobile platform, is already well established, so now's a great time to Expand the Brand.
@DaHarder
no 4G = no Deal
@DaHarder The Droid brand has become very strong. Many will look at it as a great desirable device. Proven when the Droid Inc. and Droid X came along, they got great media and consumer attention, especially the Droid X.
Just hope they don't let us down, and hope Google works with them..
@Wjackson25
Apparently you didn't get the news...
Verizon is expected to start their LTE onslaught this fall, which sounds like perfect timing for the release of this kind of device.
We'll See...
@Motorola Droid Eww on both phones. Incredible ftw lol :)
Here's my grand hopes:
1.) Most important: this device isn't a piece of crap
2.) This device goes for $300 or less on a 2-year contract
3.) Monthly access fee is $30 for unlimited data on the tablet
4.) I dump my Android phone for a dumb phone
My costs would be the new tablet + a dumb phone (from eBay) minus the revenues I get from selling my Android phone on eBay. Monthly costs would stay fixed since I'm more-or-less "transferring" my data plan from the Android phone to the new tablet.
One can hope...
@Joseph Mama
This isn't just a Joseph, but why do all you people who plan on getting tablets want to be locked into a two year contract? I mean, most of you have rooted droids so why don't you just use free wifi tethering rather than pay for the same thing?
I mean I guess To some people it's worth spending an extra $750 a year to use a tablet, but kind of flies in the face of logic when you have people already claiming the base iPad is too expensive.
Sent from my iPad, tethered to win mo :p.
@DaHarder Yuppers! Motorola DOES LTE radios. In fact, they do all sorts of LTE stuff.
Mark my words, the device will have the Tegra 2, Gingerbread and LTE, do video calling and will probably be Verizon's flag-ship device to announce along with the lighting of their LTE.
@SharonW
I'm right there with you on every count...
The future of 'gadgets' is looking brighter every day.
@DaHarder: Fail Harder.
@DaHarder
Yes, but what screen resolution will be on this, heh, heh big 10 inch? Doesn't Android only support up to 854x480?
@DaHarder Verizon or Frontier ???? I'm so confused...
@Robhimself
Yes please! Fios is the best, I feel like I'm stuck in a special kind of hell where the devil is charging me when I use ATT UVerse.
Come on Verizon, SAVE US.
@I THE SANDMAN Another report from CNET says that this tablet will be thinner and lighter than the iPad, and will have tethering (I am guessing from phones).
@etwashoo2
Given the inordinate number of devices currently touting 10.xx inch displays, it's probably safe to say that the resolution will either be 1024x600 or 1366x768, unless they decide against a 16:9-ish aspect ratio.
We'll See Soon Enough...
@DaHarder Thread-Jack-Alert
Am I the only one that thinks "Grandfathered" is being incorrectly used?
@Robhimself What is your neighborhood? I work for verizon and was a FiOS Engineer for quite awhile
@Motorola Droid posting from my droid solely because of your comment.
@etwashoo2
Gingerbread (Android 3.0) is rumored have support for 1280 x 760 resolution, and it's supposed to come out in 4th quarter. So let's review:
- Moto and Verizon making a Droid XXL for this fall
- LTE rolling out this fall
- Gingerbread rolling out this fall or winter
Hmmm.
@EggoEspada Yah original droid was terrible in every way, droid x is ugly (cause it's moto) but is somewhat well spec'd and the skin is better than stock
@DaHarder
BUT IF I HAVE VERIZON FIOS AT HOME, WILL I HAVE TO PAY MORE TO ATCH IT ON MY TABLET?
@DaHarder
I can just imagine how Motorola is going to turn this product into a monumental FAIL but I know that they're completely capable of doing it. They haven't done anything right since the original RAZR and I'm sure they'll carry on the legacy of a once well-known company gone bad. Google and Android is going to shaft Motorola in some way or they'll figure a way to screw up on their very own. Death of Motorola by the end of the year.
I hope they come through with this! It sounds like the iPad will finally get some decent competition.
@HahaHaha321 Hopefully they don't call it the DroidPad. At this point there are more pads in the techworld than there are at Walgreens. Not that I know about tech. I'm just in charge of paper. :)
@Michael Scott that's not true! The only one is the ipad.
@Motorola Droid What about IdeaPad. PalmPad, BlackPad. Anyways, Well these things are fun for playing games and forwarding funny emails but real business is done on paper. And paper also comes in pads!
@HahaHaha321
Looks like Motorola/Verizon are abnegating anything related to 'pad', and keeping it nice and simple... DROID T anyone?
Droid Tablet?
@Evil Pikachu Droid Does... in epic proportions.
as a fios and vzw customer, this could be just what changes my mind about tablets
How about the former Verizon Fios customers that are now Frontier Fios customers?
It shall be mine... a perfect match for my new Froyo Droid. Almost like the iPhone/ipad pair
Sounds good, wanna see that with ginger bread
Droid does TV ?
I'm so sad that I have to wait till my contract is over with AT&T to get myself a DROID :(. I already have FOID but no VERIZON DROID. Hate being stuck with AT&T and their crappy phones even though I have a good signal where I live at.
@Inspector Gadget80
If it's a solid Android 2.xx experience you're after, but have no real issues with AT&T, there's a lot of goodness in the Samsung Captivate.
Options Are Nice...
After owning a moto droid, I'd prefer if it were manufactured by HTC but this seems good enough.
