Pantech drops AMOLED completely due to shortage, may resume use in 2H 2011
The Pantech Vega that just hit Korea may boast a sizable 3.7-inch AMOLED screen, but don't expect future phones from the Helio manufacturer to follow suit -- after suffering the same shortages that drove HTC to Sony's SLCD-illuminated doorstep, Pantech's also temporarily giving active-matrix organic technology the boot. Now, you may not give two nickels about the technologies in Pantech's next handset, but the firm's got a finger on the industry's pulse. So when an unnamed executive says "phones to be rolled out in the first half of next year" won't use AMOLED, that hints at when the shortage for US-bound devices might also let up. In case you're curious, 2H 2011 is when Samsung's next AMOLED facility is slated to open, though by that point AU Optronics and TPO Display should be shipping the screens as well.

Well, that sucks
@Someguyperson
AMOLED shortage sucks all across the board. I have a Samsung P&S in backorder for a couple months now due to the shortage. I think I'll be lucky if I get my camera by the holiday season T_T
@ok old news again
Nokia are using AMOLED on the N8 , so i am guessing that have enough of them , but yea have to agree , played with a demo N8 and the screen on it was really really nice, AMOLED kicks ass.
Galaxy S, FTW!
@IMarius
I think this means that orders already processed (like for the Nokia N8, or Samsung Galaxies) are still going through, but new orders are quite a way off.
@Someguyperson
Haha. Only the companies with the deepest pockets are going to get first preference and that might not even cut it. The companies that build AMOLED displays will use them for their own products. Samsung and LG have it made in the shade.
Love the technology, just hoping for much wider adoption in the next few months.
@DaHarder
...SLCD that is.
@DaHarder ummm no. SAMOLED > SLCD. because its thinner and because lcd requires a backlight. led only lights up individual pixels so you have true blacks in video and in general SAMOLED just looks amazing, downright surreal. Check out a Galaxy S in a store and you'll see why LCD is doomed for obsolescence.
@MisterWarmth
Oh - I never said that SAMOLED wasn't outstanding technology... It Certainly Is!
Yes, but where's the article on the link I sent in on the Droid getting froyo manually?
@jjrudey
http://phandroid.com/2010/08/03/manually-update-your-motorola-droid-to-froyo/
Right here.
@RhymeMaster
No. The one I sent to engadget, I like how they never use my tips, and if they do they thank someone else hours later.
@jjrudey
http://mobile.engadget.com/2010/08/03/motorola-droids-froyo-update-now-available-for-download-if-you/
@Plazmic Flame
See what I mean? not using my tips
@jjrudey
I sent it in too. They're kinda slow on this one. I already put it on my phone and sideloaded Flash on it. It works!
WHAT?????
Jesus, they Kirfed both the phone and contacts icons from iOS. I'm a bit weary of the lack of imagination in the market. Create your own damn icons at least.
@kent99 Lol I know they totally ripped the icons. Im just glad there are other good phones out there that don't rely on the "it sort of like an iPhone" sales pitch.
Even now that the whole "iPhone killer" thing is dead companies still just borrow apple's style because everyone lives their eye-candy
@kent99
Haha yeah it's pretty blatant
Damn, I'm sorry Engadget... did we give you the impression anyone gave a crap about what PANTECH was doing?
@CannedCorn
I thought there was too much apple news
@CannedCorn
Pantech is getting pretty good at making phones. I personally think that they are one of the few companies that could pull an HTC in a few years. They need to drop that skin and load stock Android on that poor phone though.
Hmm, doesn't surprise me.
I like that wallpaper.
@einhanderkiller
I had that wallpaper on my phone. Found it at interfacelift
@einhanderkiller
This one (called Stabilis) and more can be found at the author's website: http://www.perfecthue.com (i'm currently in love with the one named Spectrum)
I wonder if they asked for his permission though
Open 1+ factories in the US. Problem solved.
@BigD145
That would be nice, but the US decided long ago that it could survive without factory-jobs....
.... except that no country can survive without manufacturing jobs and the crap position we are in today is proof of that.
Are there any Android phones out there WITHOUT the touch sensitive buttons below the screen?
Not a fan. The only touch button that has ever been responsive for me is the one on the older ps3s.
They just seem slow to respond sometimes. It's either a button or it's not. If it's touch sensitive just put it on the damn screen. If not make them tactile buttons.
Maybe the buttons share a digitizer with the screen or something...
@Awall1987
X Does.
@Awall1987
The capacitive buttons do share the digitizer with the screen....
Looks like a Samsung. Even the UI is a rip-off.
@Frasier
Samsung, UI, and Ripoff. Something doesn't belongs there. If you're talking about the "other" phone but do that phone got widget, live wallpaper, and multiple page view? You're just jealous.
I don't see what the fuss is all about.
I've seen the GalaxyS in person multiple times and came real close to buying one and yeah the screen looks very good, but I didn't get the "OMG!1!!! THIS IS THE BESTEST THING EVA AND NOW I AM GOING TO SPLOOGE1!!!" reaction that everyone on the internets seems to have when the subject of amoled and super amoled comes up.
When I played w/a Galaxy S (Vibrant) last week, the screen did look really sharp (though, yes, not necessarily splooge-worthy) when viewing the desktop/icons -- but when I opened the browser, it suddenly became much more "dull" and washed-out... the browser made it look like an LCD screen, basically. It was odd; Don't know if my eyes were fooling me, or what. The brightness was jacked all the way up, too. (I owned a Nexus One for a few weeks at the beginning of the year, and I remember the browser looking just as nice as anything else onscreen.)
@pavvy
The browser has its own brightness settings, and is defaulted to low brightness.
@Hazdaz I disagree, it is sploodge-worthy!
/me wipes up my Galaxy S :P
@j3ff -- interesting to know, thanks for the info!
Is Nokia perhaps the luckiest company on Earth all of a sudden, since they picked a 3.5" AMOLED display for the N8? Seems like the shortages are only in 3.7" screens, since everyone else decided to go with them.
@inept
I'm hoping that means Samsung is not Nokia's supplier and maybe LG is (only Samsung uses a pentile matrix).
I'm just amazed that there is a fanboy website for AMOLED displays.
People with go fanboy for anything nowadays.
It's amazing how they ripped off Samsung's TouchWiz which was a rip off of iOS4.
Can't wait for Gingerbread to end this once and for all.
Samsung Galaxy S is very popular, Samsung wants to keep all the Super AMOLED that they can make for themselves. This gives them a competitive advantage and enables them to maximize profits.
Though LCD is much cheaper screen technology and not only Sony is making LCD, there are several huge manufacturers of very high quality LCD screens, so manufacturers using LCD can lower the prices a lot compared to Super AMOLED devices.
I thought that OLED is easier to produce and is cheaper than LCD. comments?
Screw amoled displays. My nexus one already has burn in of the notification bar :(
Now if only HTC would drop amoled.....
Imagine if Apple used a AMOLED display in the iPhone. No one would be able to get these displays for anything else.
@dlewis23
Looks like SJ made a wise decision in not going for SAMOLED. They are already having issues keeping up with demand as it is.
Honestly, I don't mind a lower end LCD as long as it doesn't hit below 3.7" mark.
