We have explored numerous readers and iPhone payment apps. All seem to have their unique fit. Although Square seems really intriguing, it is limited in that it leverages every merchant's "potential" risk and therefore the better, less risky merchants have to pay in higher fees for the risk that other merchants may inherently have. So, although the reader is free and the app is clean and nice, we had to choose a more secure app and reader. Our recommendation would be to check out www.simplyswipeit.com if you are a more solid merchant and you are interested in an iPhone solution for payments they - by far and away - were the best solution. We could use our existing payment provider and therefore got the lowest rates and the interface is very much designed for merchants (not to mention it uses MagTec's secure reader). We did a lot of research...we do a lot of transactions and needed to get it right. For what it's worth. Thanks Engadget for providing great insight!
