Barnes & Noble Nook Study now available to download, just in time for fall semester
Take heart, freshmen -- six months from now, you'll be kickin' it on holiday break, while the rest of us working folk glare angrily and curse the wasted chances that haunt us still today. Positive thinking goes a long way, right? At any rate, Barnes & Noble has made sure that its newly announced Nook Study is live prior to the start of most fall semesters and as of today, both Windows and OS X users can head to the source link to get those bits a-flowin'. We'll be interested to see just how many students take advantage of the portal -- not everyone's keen on digital textbooks, you know -- but hopefully it'll have a better go at things than did the Kindle DX.

Hmmm? I'll stick with the classroom - Thanks
@DaHarder
... though for supplemental material, this could be an asset.
@DaHarder
"Take heart, freshmen -- six months from now, you'll be kickin' it on holiday break,"
its august. december is in 4 months.
@ok1 Google shitty programming
Oh No... Not This Guy Again.
Hint: This thread topic really has nothing to do with Google/Android/Gmail etc, so take a break already.
@ok1 Google shitty programming thats funny, the whole engadget staff uses it, and praises it as the BEST email client online... I use it also, and rather like it, being able to archive, star, and have my threaded mail pushed to me on my android phone is priceless. Not to mention its free, and they have 25mb attachment limits and imap support... name ONE other free email client that can do even most of that!
@jmhalder Uh the new hotmail can send up to 50mb attachments.. Is about to have MSFT Exchange push/sync services, and has more powerful sorting options for your inbox than gmail currently has..
@DaHarder
Does it include NOOKy?
@McKirf
That all depends on your 'reading' habits, now doesn't?
@jmhalder
hotmail allows 10 GIGABYTE attachments and unlimited storage.
@palemoonrises
actually its 10gb attachments, with unlimited storage. synced with skydrive, you get a harddrive in the sky. for free.
@palemoonrises
Coming soon, eh? Doesn't make it better than Gmail.
Why does the URL have "sharktooth1987@gmail.com" in it?
@Kermee
No clue... probably the story posters private email... lol
But this semester 3 out of my 5 books are ebooks from nookstudy... I can only install the software on two computers, which is semi frustrating and there are print and copy restrictions, but for how much I dig into my textbooks doing searches and keeping notes... I think this is going to be fantastic... I've been waiting for something like this since I started school and read my first book in PDF form. Now if they can just change it to 2 computers and an iPad so I would have an excuse to buy one!
@Kermee
hey that's my email!
Those college book cost more than attending the class itself. How bout a big discount for download? No? Then I'll stick with my overpriced physical textbook.
@cdf74dc9
half off isn't a big discount? at least for the rental not the purchase... but I don't use textbooks when the class is over anyway.
"NOOKteach for free too.. for teachers trying to detect plagiarism"
This would be great if more books were offered. Of my 7 textbooks required for this fall, only 2 are offered for this. Looks like my Nook will be reserved for reading between classes. :(
@Silroc
... and for that, it does work very well.
@DaHarder
Oh, agreed. Love it. Just got really excited when I first saw this, and was a bit disappointed after actually looking in to it.
@Silroc
The spouse was pretty 'psyched' as well (as an educator), but agrees that it still needs a bit of work.
It does show promise though.
@Silroc The books I need aren't up yet but I'll keep this on my radar.
That being said, I don't have a Nook right now. I read on my phone through the Kindle app, it's not the most comfortable experience but it still manages to fall into the enjoyable category. One thing I noticed when I played with the Nook was that it's screen seemed to be a little slow turning pages. I love the look of the Nook and the touchscreen at the bottom but I'm not sure if I should jump in and get a Nook now or wait and try to get the new Kindle when it becomes available.
Do you get annoyed by the screen speed on the Nook? If you were able to trade your Nook and books for the new Kindle and Amazon ebook equivalents, would you?
@JONNNathannn Absolutely not. I've had mine since launch, and I love the nook.
@JONNNathannn
The page turning is a bit slower, but not badly so. I've gotten used to hitting the page turn button just a half a second before I hit the end of the page. It's a great reading experience with a lot of extras going for it.
Any idea of whether this will be supported on the iPad? I will be very excited if I can ditch the weight of physical textbooks for my last semester in grad school.
@blokeyhighlander
Doubt it :(
Looks like they beat the Blio Reader to it!
Uh-oh. Expect Amazon to respond with a strong offering, soon. No way they are going to sit around and watch Barnes and Noble dominate the e-textbook market. Should be interesting!
@coolbreeze
Yeah, this will determine which e-reader I buy: Kindle or Nook!
@einhanderkiller
I was thinking the exact same thing. If most of my 6 courses of books are on the Nook, then I'll buy it. If not, Meh.
hmmm that's my email in the link.....
:(
@johnmulnix how did it get there?
@johnmulnix
Very sorry to hear that... I feel your (pending) pain.
@koolerz1569
I submitted a tip a day or so ago.
@johnmulnix
ya know, had you not said anything i wouldn't have noticed! :-P
I downloaded it yesterday. I may buy a Nook and just get all my books digital, idk yet....
But I thought B&N was for sale? At least that is what Giz says...
Why support 9 years old Windows, but not 3 or 5 years old OSX. Lame newbie Mac developers supporting only 10.6.
Pretty much every class I've taken so far at my college has offered the books in a digital format for free. This is a pretty nice service, but since most students don't read their books after they graduate, they tend to sell them to either other students or a book store like Half Price Books. This service wouldn't allow you to recoup any money spent on the books that you could probably find in physical form used for the same price and then be able to sell them when you're done. Plus with what some people have already said about not having all of their books available I wouldn't think it would be worth it.
@Nightmare
what shool do you go to that offers free digital textbook?
@Shannighan lol my bad...I was at work for around 6 hours by then and was pretty much half awake at the time. Since I have online and campus classes I am charged a books/lab fee which covers both online classes and my one campus class for digital books. The fee would cover all books for the semester so even if I had a 4th class it would be the same and probably less than what the NookStudy would charge.
nook study sucks. you can only read your textbooks on the computer screen. no support for iPad or even their own nook stating that the screens are too small. But the largest problem with nook study is... no digital textbooks. Out of the eight textbooks I need for next semester, ZERO were available.
So no windows vista eh??
sorry for some reason i didnt see the vista... but now i c it :P
I'm pretty sure that even if they do have a decent offering of textbooks a lot of my advanced law classes allow open textbook but no electronic devices(regardless if it can be used for communicating). I think that this would be the biggest problem for students like myself.
Also, i personally don't but, a lot of people usually sell their textbooks after the term is done in order to raise funds for next term's textbooks, and also buying used and reselling it after saves even more cash. E-books can't really do that for obvious reasons...
The idea is great though... for the rich student ( 1 out of 1000) and when the campus bookstore is sold out and you gotta wait 2 weeks for the order or something and no1 has a copy to sell or lend for photo-copies, ect.
Still not quite there but a good start at least...
Not a single one of my texts was available, not even the basic stuff like BIO 111. That's always been the problem with e-textbooks, no support.
