Google's Schmidt boasts 200K Android devices sold daily, waxes intellectual on society and technology
Google CEO Eric Schmidt is quite the quotable man -- we hear he's pretty chatty at coffee shops, too -- and at the Techonomy conference, he hasn't failed to disappoint. First, some cold hard data: according to Schmidt, about 200,000 new Android devices are being sold each day, which he claims is up from 100,000 daily sales about two months ago (and up from the 60,000 daily activations from April). That number is just one drip from a stream of good news for the platform this week, including 866 percent year-over-year growth and the top spot in NPD's sales rankings. We're fairly confident there's a team of top mathematicians, statisticians, and engineers in Mountain View right now tasked with finding new and innovative ways to boast about Android's success.
Speaking of Techonomy, Schmidt used some of his on-stage time to discuss the new concerns technology has engendered. "The technology of course is neutral but society is not fundamentally ready," he said, claiming AI today could very likely use location-based services and predict where a person was going next, among other nightmares for privacy advocates. Schmidt opines that it's up to the society on how the collected information is regulated while computers do what they do best -- gather and recall information. We like think adorable kitten pictures falls nicely into that latter category, and that's all we care about anyway.

@ok1 Google shitty programming
your right, I guess its aweful compared to the white iPhon... er... oh wait, nevermind.
die in a fire you stupid troll.
@ok1 Google shitty programming
The thing you are in denial about is people would buy a evo without a back on it if they could get there hands on one.
@ok1 Google shitty programming
http://www.engadget.com/photos/white-htc-evo-4g-unboxing/#3149288
looks like its white with the front bezel being black... the rear trim is still white... get a life.
@jmhalder
you mean the whole phone is black, and the whole battery cover is white.
@jmhalder
buttons are not the bezel, nor are the speakers. you are severly misinformed, go look up what a bezel is then talk to me moron
@ok1 Google shitty programming
so please, if the Evo is SO awful, do tell, what is your phone of choice?
@ok1 Google shitty programming
by the way, I said the rear trim is white, which it is. Its a fact, dont even bother arguing with it.
@ok1 Google shitty programming
No what means is, take your idiotic logic, and shove it up your ass.
@ok1 Google shitty programming Ok, I have an iphone and i dont like android. But you even pissing me off now, Please GTFO
No wonder...they are selling like hot cakes!!
@viditbhargava
Making that kind of money, bet you that's not all that Schmidt waxes...
@viditbhargava more like selling like frozen yogurt in august..
*heh heh*
@viditbhargava
well, can you blame people for buying phones that can make calls when holding normally???
@viditbhargava
Android is seriously kicking some ass.
@viditbhargava
loving my 2.2 rooted evo
@viditbhargava
In before "but, but, but" iCrowd.
@Mike10010100
Four words:
HTC.
Lawsuit.
Suck.
It.
@viditbhargava
so 200,000 a day comes out to almost 1.5 million a week. 1.5 MILLION DEVICES A WEEK!
Apple sold 1.5 million iPhones in the first day? Well what is there average rate of selling after the first few weeks? Because if these calculations are correct, Android will surely dominate the entire US market in just a few months...
@nelagster Actually it was 1.7 in 3 days, which was launched in 8 countries, meaning the iPhone 4. But yea, don't feel like doing the math, too light for that. lol.
@kingofwale Get some new material, cause that is getting old. Congrats to google though, they are really putting me on the fence about snagging an android to see what it's all about.
@Wesscoast
Four words:
It.
Doesn't.
Matter.
Moron.
@ok1 Google shitty programming
GTFO, troll. You've posted that same thing 5 times. You've been banned how many times now? 4? 5?
@ok1 Google shitty programming
You sound hurt.
@ok1 Google shitty programming
You are trying too hard
@ok1 Google shitty programming
"congrats google, and you make ZERO dollars for each sale."
Doesn't matter. Google attempts to reach market saturation and then rakes in the dough via targeted marketing and ad placement. They give the stuff out for free and then make money from ads.
"Microsoft makes money from each android sale thanks to google infringing on microsoft patents. Heres how: HTC entered into a patent licensing agreement with microsoft, agreeing that google infringed on patents. Other manufacturers like motorola are discussing with microsoft to come up with an agreement. dont believe me? "
I believe you about HTC. That is known fact. However, anything beyond that is speculation. Microsoft makes money from each SALE from HTC, but Google makes money in the long term by providing targeted ads.
@ok1 Google shitty programming Google actually estimated it can easily make more or less 10B from Android annually. Just throwing that out there. They get money off data, ads, and searches. Which is why the license is free. OEMs jump on the bandwagon because its affordable than Windows Mobile or making their own OS, etc. Theres already a user base and support, plus developers. So it makes Android an obvious choice, and Google makes money off, like I said, data, searches, ads, etc. off each user with an Android device. Quite frankly, that tactic might be arguably better than MS licensing their OS. Why choose WM over free Android.
So Google sure knows what they're doing..
@ok1 Google shitty programming
I voted you down, but worth mentioning that they DO license the use of the Market and Gmail (so called GApps) also they take a small portion of apps sold on the Market... so how do they make "Zero"? they make a TON of money on it. Android has literally redefined google.
@ok1 Google shitty programming
Amazing how you continue to ignore my assertion that you have been banned multiple times. When will you get the hint, troll?
They're going to ban all Google apps? With Google ads in each one? Wow. Absolutely amazing.
@ok1 Google shitty programming
"The revenue sharing deals appear to be advertising revenue shared with carriers that support Android. For handset makers, the revenue comes in when they include Google applications like search, maps, Gmail etc which is not a requirement for Android phones. Well, the details are sketchy since Google is not as open as Android. Google declined to comment on their agreements stating they are private and confidential.
Since, all Google applications will generate advertising revenue, Google can still afford to share their revenue."
http://hardgeek.org/how-does-google-make-money-on-android-%E2%80%9Candroid-the-cash-cow%E2%80%9D
You are seriously a moron.
@viditbhargava Me being fan of Apple products (not a fanboy, there is a difference), I saw this coming not because Android is just better, its because all the negative propaganda media have for that stupid antenna problem which is actually just as bad as any other phone. Australia and New Zealand already has claimed that in their tests iPhone is not better or worst compare to other phones in reception. People here just hear something on TV and just believe it. Well, I'm all happy for Google because Android is just gonna end up as another MS Windows. Even though over 80% computer have MS windows on them but still OS X kick Windows ass on any level. Now you hear the truth and now watch how quickly you will send my comment in oblivion. You Android fans can't take truth.
@nelagster
Try about 16 months. And that's if Apple sells zero iOS devices starting.....now.
@etwashoo2
No it's not!
All you're buying is hardware with a free mobile OS. Moto, LG etc don't pay for Android.
And with so much Android glut you will see a very fast slowdown as the celly makers run out of ideas and the after market Android phone. eat away at new stuff. Thank god for you so-called techies that buy new Android phones every other month.
The Android thing has already plateaued.
@ok1 Google shitty programming Yeah your right. Google know nothing about making money...
@Raytem
Wow. Before the iPhone was popular because it was the best. Now the phone is the best despite it not being popular.
With that kind of logic, iFans can't lose!
@pspitts
Man, yeah. It's definitely plateaued. That's why the number of cell phones sold per day just keeps going up. That's definitely the definition of plateaued.
/s
@ok1 Google shitty programming
You're such a friggin moron. I just provided direct proof as to how Google makes money, and you just blow it off.
You're a troll. Get banned again.
@ok1 Google shitty programming Yeah Google should take a different angle with Android if they want to make money. I mean look how much money Microsoft made with the Kin!
@Raytem
Despite what you wrote, you sound like an apple fanperson, not a person who likes apple products.
@Wesscoast
Just so you know... HTC is actually an acronym, not a word. So I think you meant 6 words, eh?
@ok1 Google shitty programming
Let me reiterate: Why do you keep coming back after being banned repeatedly? Why won't you go away?
@Mike10010100
"but Google makes money in the long term by providing targeted ads."
What a stupid business model. their OS is open source. guess what? microsoft can buy the search engine in android for any manufacturer.
http://news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-20000273-94.html
"Motorola and Microsoft cut a deal to put the software giant's Bing search engine on Android handsets in China. "
there goes their "genius" business model. idiot
@Raytem
Here's a fun fact for you: When OSX can't even make the mouse acceleration right, then what can it make, nothing. Google that, fanboy :D
@Raytem
fail, Windows 7 pwns Apple anyday. Dont you understand why Apple has a 5% market share? and dont say corporations..
@ok1 Google shitty programming
I've already disproved that, moron. Quit spamming the exact same post over and over again in the same thread.
Do you have to be IP banned now? Why do you keep coming back?
@Wesscoast So what? Apple got sued by Nokia. This happens all the time.
@Raytem You are right. This does seem like Windows against Mac OS all over again. It is still early though and it will actually be a fair fight when the iPhone comes out on all major carriers. Then we shall see reigns supreme. If given a choice I think most of the public will opt for iPhone over Android, but they don't have that choice right now. (on their given cellphone provider) Could you imagine Android outselling iPhone on AT&T? We will get a change to test this theory when Apple finally gets on Verizon.
If Google does win, at least, it won't be Microsoft. Google deserves their success Microsoft as far as Windows is concerned does not.
@iPhone 4
no it isnt "windows vs mac osx" because windows phone 7 is about to launch. itll be windows phone vs iphone. android will slide to irelevancy in 2 months.
@ok1 Google shitty programming
How are you so certain of that? And why do you keep returning after being banned repeatedly?
@iPhone4
"If given a choice I think most of the public will opt for iPhone over Android, but they don't have that choice right now."
Android usage has tripled in the UK, where iPhones are sold on every major carrier.
@ok1 Google shitty programming
how about the white evo? its a black phone with a white battery cover. definition of cheap and shitty.
Also known as the iPhone 3g and 3gs
@ok1 Google shitty programming So they were contractual obligated to make a crappy product that nobody bought? Excluding you of course. How many millions of dollars did Microsoft invest into Kin marketing? And how much do you think Google have put into marketing Android? Starting to understand now?
@viditbhargava to be fair though, you can't really compare Android sales with iPhone sales given that Android is used for non-phone-based devices as well.
While market saturation is good, the Android brand gets diluted a bit with it being the OS of choice for KIRFs as well, but then again, that may be a good thing for Google since it might just become the mobile device standard OS.
