HP rolls out Mini 5103 business netbook with optional touchscreen, SSD
HP's quietly busted out the successor to the Mini 5102 -- the Mini 5103 -- on its Italian website. This business-oriented 10.1-incher boasts options galore, including a choice of Atom N455 or N475 CPUs, an up to 320GB HDD or an up to 128GB SSDan optional touchscreen display, optional Broadcom Crystal HD video accelerator, and optional Bluetooth 2.1+EDR. Other than that, it's going to feature up to 2GB of RAM, Intel GMA 3150 graphics, gigabit ethernet, three USB 2.0 ports, VGA, and an SD card reader and WiFi b/g/n and a 2 megapixel webcam. This puppy's going to run €429 (that's around $565) in Italy -- and while there's no word yet on pricing or availability elsewhere, we do know that the Mini 5102 is currently nowhere to be found on the US site, either, so we wouldn't be surprised to see this one pop up any day now.

Still waiting for something new in the netbook market.
This actually looks pretty interesting to me. I love HP's business notebook line (ie Elitebook). I'm wondering what the battery life will be - if they can get 10+ hours, this has the potential to be a great netbook.
@tobsmonster2
i guess ur waiting for canoe lake
@tobsmonster2 Still waiting for something new on Engadget, it's called spell check and grammar check.
@VictorBush
While more battery life is always better, I never understood the need for 10hrs.
Do you guys really find yourselves working on your laptops away from a power source for more than 9hrs in a sitting? I rarely break 30-45mins at a stretch, and rather use a lighter and thinner 3-4hr battery.
@Ducman69 For me, it's more about the convenience of not having to plug in as often, whether I'm using it near an outlet or not.
@Ducman69
I was recently at a Roundtable Meeting with 15 people that ran for a Full Day where everyone had a laptop sitting in front of them and all were searching out extension Cords.. They had wires running everywhere.. while I sat back and used My iPad 3G .. Oh and I also used it to watch a Movie on the Flight home that evening.. It depends on How You use a Portable device & I dont care to be dragging around Powerbrick & cord so I can Tie My Portable computing device to a Wall...
@tobsmonster2 put meego on it and you have something new and fresh.
$565 for an Intel GMA 3150 graphics netbook...
Or less than $500 for an ASUS Eee PC 1215N with:
1.8 dual core processor
ION 2
NVIDIA OPTIMUS
Chiclet keyboard
Matte under keyboard
Privacy webcam toggle
@Ducman69
International travel, or even a library with no free outlets = big yes.
@Ducman69
Yes. Take one flight half-way around the world without access to airport power and this becomes a productivity factor.
Also, the "10-hour" spec. rarely holds up as batteries turn to rock over time and you want the laptop usable over the lifespan of 1 to 2 years, typically.
@TareG
Yep the ASUS Eee PC 1215N is def. about to be king of netbooks even though it comes with a 12.1" screen
netbook with notebook pricing? naw
@dreamerkm
1) HPs rarely sell for MSRP. Theres usually some "save 15% bla bla" thing going on.
2) You can't compare European and US prices. Europe has a lot of "free" services, and so absolutely everything costs a FORTUNE. Despite the relative increase in the dollar, the ZR1 in the UK costs $174K, a 70% price increase over the US.
@Ducman69 i meant it including the ssd option
might as well buy a full fledged laptop for that price
@Ducman69: Meh, it doesn't matter that the Corvette ZR1 costs the equivalent of $174,000 in the UK, since very few people are silly enough to buy one over something that's better built, better looking and with a deeper heritage, i.e. doesn't look like the interior has been constructed from odds and ends from discarded Chrysler Neons and two-bit Cadillacs. ;-)
@meeku Sounds like some fanboi is butthurt that the Chevy raped his beloved car at the Ring w/ the C5R and now C6R dominating the GT class for the last decade. :D
Its ok, some people don't mind always being runner-up, and you can always tell people about how smooth the dash feels when you finally cross the finish line.
@Ducman69 That is full of fucking WIN. Maybe Chevy forgot to use the lube and that's why he's pissed.
I dont understand the point of a touchscreen if its not more of a tablet. Like the tm2 makes sense because i can use a pen and flip tue screen around. But in a form factor like that, why?
Broadcom, Atom N475, GMA3150...all irrelevant now that Acer 521 exists. What's the point?
Netbooks = Fad that will hopefully go away soon.
@Juggernaut408
Yes, millions upon millions were selling by accident. *rolleyes* My sister and mom both have excellent very powerful $1000+ 15" laptops through work, with powerful Core2Duos, 4GB ram, etc. Yet most of the time they are on the little pink Dell Mini 9s I got them.
Well, the netbook is tiny, fits in their purse, weighs very little, and w/ the SSD and very little integrated hardware to detect boots up even from a cold start in seconds.
If netbooks vanish, it'll only be because the appeal of low cost and small/thin form factor will have blurred. =)
@Juggernaut408
Trolls = Fad that will hopefully go away soon.
$565? Wasn't that the rumored price of the HP Slate? After adding the extra options, this sounds better than the slate.
This looks like a worthy replacement to my 6910p.
Well this things does look good, but as owned66 pointed out above intel's Canoe Lake prototype Notebooks look amazing.

Hoping they come with larget screens tool
I've got an 5101 and I'm very very happy.
@aranfitz I think you and I are probably like 2 out of 100 that own a 5101. I got it for about $300 with a 1366x768 screen. It runs 7 (free from my school :) ) surprisingly well.
still no HDMI, still USB 2?
This is getting pathetic. My vote to the AMD Mobile platform...
I don't like the idea of business oriented and 10.1 inches in the same sentence.
@jeff0529
but other people like them
Other than the new cpu options, this looks exactly like the 5102. I'm currently using the 5102 as my main system with no problems. When working from home I just use an external monitor. Also when ordering a netbook from business section it's not to hard to get a decent discount on it.
While the 5103 is pretty (as much as the 5102 also), it still lacks the power and multimedia oomph of, say, the ASUS 1215N, with its D525 dual core and ION 2 graphics :(
"Touchpad with scroll zone and two soft-touch buttons"
hork hork barf, HP.
Did anyone else notice that they offer FreeDOS as an option?
That made my day.
