Time Warner Cable developing iOS app, laptime viewing may never be the same (video)
Looks like TWC is the latest victim of tablet fever. Not wanting to get left behind as Comcast flaunts its iPad app for remote scheduling, Time Warner Cable is showing off its own, slated to hit the iPad and the iPhone at some point in the future. (It's called "prototyping work" at this point.) The app would allow a subscriber to view current TV listings and change their DVR's recording schedule from afar, plus use intuitive searches to find new content. That's promising, because whenever we search through TWC's current Scientific Atlanta DVR interface we wind up spiking our remote control in frustration, and that's getting expensive. Even more promising is the plan to pump TV Everywhere to iOS and, down the road, to provide an API for other devs to write their own apps against. Care to watch a bunch of TWC executives lounging in a corner office while discussing the app? Check the video after the break. It's part one of a series and, if you stay awake through all four, you win a prize!

Welcome to 2009 TWC and Comcast!
Regards,
Verizon Fios Users.
@technomom
The iPad wasn't out in 2009.
@Almo
"slated to hit the iPad and the iPhone at some point in the future"
No but the iPhone was, FiOS had this a long time ago.
@CTTHosting
Well at least they have a proper iPad version unlike FiOS's 2x upscaled iPhone size.
@technomom
AT&T U-verse was the first one to have something like this. So in this case it should be welcome to 2005 (they also support dumbphones, that's why the date is pre-iOS).
@WhiteNiteLite Nope direct tv had an app for remote scheduling in March 2009.
@Almo
The smaller version of the IPad was available.
@technomom It's this whole one carrier at a time philosophy which is stupid. If the entire country got behind a technology like AllVid and we could just buy a box from Logitech or Motorola or *gasp* Apple, we could all have these features depending on how much we were willing to pay and what we wanted. Instead, we are beholden to feature that the cable companies provide because of the location we live in or the channels they provide when those should be the only things they control. Talk to your Congressmen today!
Okay, that's pretty hot. Can I change the channel while I'm at work?? lol
@Plazmic Flame
Can I assume that iPhone also means iPod, or is this operating over 3G?
@Luke
Can I also assume that iPads will be issued with TW cable boxes now?
@Plazmic Flame Does Timewarner = Brighthouse? Maybe? please?
What is the prize? Say there is no prize and I sue.
@Luke Sadly we don't know. We all passed out about mid-way through the third episode.
@TimStevens
"@Luke Sadly we don't know. We all passed out about mid-way through the third episode."
lmao
@TimStevens
Lotta beef in that room. A lotta beef.
@Luke I was thinking the same thing. At lest 2 corn-fed heffers just taking up space. No wonder my cable bill is so high!
It's about time they get in this game.
Yeah...ummm....
That...ummm... Looks... Umm...
Good... ummmm...
Hmmm...
Considering the service was COMPLETE SH*T and they never got a bill right, I am glad I will soon have a streaming DISH NETWORK app...
:D
so....its a tv remote?
Does it make your TWC-issued DVR not a steamy pile of shit? No? Pass.
@GdgtMan
People, I'll say it again: Netflix, Dish Network's DTV Pal OTA HD DVR and PlayOn media server, for. the. win. Stop paying 100 a month for more content than you could ever watch when you can get more than you could ever watch for free.
Funny how they are looking into something innovative concept on the iPad ... yet they still can't deliver total home dvr. This is why I switched to uverse.
Glad to see they're spending their money on this instead of making their internet service work. Hopefully there will at least be a "Threaten a Representative" section to streamline customer feedback.
I wonder if they'll take away my 3x rewind with this "upgrade", just like they took away my 4x with the last one.
@Funke Tobias Dr
I hold you responsible if they do this....dont gvie them a reason
there dvr's are just slightly above using a VCR and a timer to record shows..
@Funke Tobias Dr You should have 4x ff back by now, we do. Also you should be able to turn off the ff and rewind compensation where it jumps back or forward when you hit play.
Where are they? An expensive old people's home!
Typical of twc and small minded companies that develop apps for one platform.
"we wind up spiking our remote control in frustration, and that's getting expensive" -- Wouldn't it be more expensive to spike your iPad?
So many great apps. Too bad those new to ATT are limited to 2GB per month of 3G for 25 bucks(what a joke). Not everyone is tethered to a wifi area ATT. Isnt the whole purpose in having an ipad and iphone so we can connect anywhere. Try streaming a movie a day on netflix or HD youtube you will easily go over 2gb a month. Please go to Verizon Apple. At least with them they allow 'unlimited' on their Droids, and not 5gb unlimited but 'actual unlimited'.
@michial I hate to break this to you but all carriers well be going to a tiered data plan just like ATT.
@michial Ive 2GB plan on my iPad and I watch movies on netflix and watch shows on abc app without a care. 2GB is plenty if you don't abuse it.
@Raytem
What is abuse? Using your smartphone away from wifi. I use many apps which stream music and video throughout the day. How exactly is that abuse? I associate abuse with the ethical/moral. Please explain.
@jsbaugh
Actually at Verizon they have no plans to do that. They recently changed their plan this year and apparently they have a big enough network to handle it. Same reason Att doesnt like facetime over 3g because their network is crippled by the great demand for the iphones. As news is trickling out though soon I will be a happy Verizon patron with an iphone I can use in more places. Hopefully for 30 bucks on Verizon I can use my ipad all I want and not worry about checking if Im over 2gb. We have friends who cant even get att in montana or new mexico. They said Verizon is the only one with coverage. Its a fact Verizon does have the best and most real estate in coverage. I live 20 minutes north of seattle and tried the iphone out for 6 months. I couldnt get reception in various parts of two downtown skyscrapers, lost transmission on the i-5 freeway in seattle, and in our kitchen-several dropped calls. Verizon-never a problem-plus no 2gb cap(because one musnt abuse 3g with a 3g phone...)
@michial Before you start defending yourself please notice I've never said, YOU particularly abuse it. Second, I do the same. Because of the nature of my job I'm on the road and 99% of the time using my 3G. Most of my apps are depending on Internet. I use Maps app a lot as well. I bet you don't even know what is your average monthly use of the data is. Abuse is watching 5 netflix movies on 3G daily. I don't have that much time to waste but I don't know about you.
@michial Wow, you are such a Verizons bitch. How much they paying you for this advertisement?
Watch out for the the $15.99 "Universal Mobile Application Servicing Fee" buried in the fine print of your Time Warner Cable billing statement.
"Yeah, let's have a casual sit down setting with the CEO and CFO. That will show how down to earth we are."
Wrong. That is the most painfully awkward little 'chat' I've ever seen.
THE HELL? Comcast has an iPAD APP?
I sitll can't even schedule through the browser on on my DVR and I sure as hell don't see an Android app for scheduling.
Bite my a$$, comcast.
This is great news. I just was wondering if they were gonna do anything like this.
god, that guy is terrible to listen to. And what a ridiculous setting with people bored to hell sitting in ugly furniture.
Pretty nice app though.
It appears he licked his finger at :58secs before using the app. Like it was a TV Guide or something. Speaking of which, I would file the app under "Cheers". But the finger-lickin' good Time Warner exec is definitely going under "Jeers".
I wonder if the app will be as slow and lethargic as their cable boxes?
I have TWC. I agree, the interface they have right now absolutely SUCKS. The one before this was ugly, but at least it was fast. This one is ridiculously slooooooooooooooooooooooooow.
TV wil never catch on. shows that you have to organize your schedule around to watch? crazy talk.
Believe it or not, Time Warner has been beta testing remote DVR management here in Charlotte, NC. We have had access to it for a few months, and it is pretty slick and the search function is fantastic.
The current implementation is all web based. There is also a mobile version as well, which can be accessed from any mobile device with a web browser.
If you go to these threads at AVS, you can see some screenshots of both the standard and mobile DVR management that we have currently in Charlotte on Time Warner.

Wow. So does this mean there is a chance in hell we will get a better interface and firmware for the stock TWC Moto DVR?
Maybe Time Warner will spend some more time on the things their customer base actually uses daily right now.
Does this mean their DVR's will start working?
No?
