New Xbox 360 hacked to play 'backup' discs, public release underway? (video)
If you're looking for video proof of the latest and greatest Xbox 360 firmware mod, you won't find it in the video after the break, but we're almost willing to take it on Team Xecuter's word and long-standing reputation that they've hacked the new Xbox 360. Banding together with Team Jungle and commodore4eva -- the hacker who brought backups to the original console in 2006 -- the group says they've successfully patched the DVD drive to play burned discs. Better still, they're promising that a public release of said patch "will be available shortly" to help you unlock a Stealthbox by your lonesome. Just remember, kids, circumventing DRM isn't always legal, even if you're copying games that you bought right off the shelf.

@ddhboy Or you could just borrow a copy from someone else and make a "backup".
Not that I'm suggesting you do that, of course.
Just curious, is this supposed to be a patch you can install without first modding your xobx? I would LOOOVE to backup my discs, they get scratched easily and they are expensive to replace.
So you don't burn copies of your CDs or rip them to the computer or put them on a portable device? I have the same computer software installed on two computers in my house using the same license because the developers allows me to. Microsoft should atleast allow rips to multiple consoles in a household with the ability to play each at the same time.
If they wouldn't charge 60 fucking dollars per game, people wouldn't pirate them so much. If they charged 20 bucks per game, they would sell 50 times as many games and have much more total cash to pay developers. It's called capitalism, there would be no market for mod chips if people could just afford the games they wanted.
@Tony Clifton
The price depends on demand, its economics. Games always launch at $60 as some magic price point and then get lowered accordingly as the numbers come in. Regardless of what it costs, it doesn't excuse piracy.
@Raffi256
Games have not always been sixty dollars. Just the new generation. Piracy exists because companies charge too much. It's against the law to steal games yet its perfectly legal to overthrow the government if everyone agrees that its corrupt? Society has spoken, the games are too expensive. Instead of overthrowing the dev, we'll simply relieve them of the game.
@Raffi256 so where does $60 initial price of most all games come from? Economics? Demand? Nope! Impossible since no one knows what demand is yet on day one. It's companies AGREEING and COLLUDING to FIX prices at $60 across like platforms! How is THAT legal?? Do you know anyone that can afford to pay $60 per game for every game they want when they want it? I don't! Between my wife and I, we make about $230k per year and I still can't get all the video games I want at $60 a pop. I know a lot of people who can watch a movie or rent a movie anytime they want, though. And movies cost a ton to produce, just like video games. I'm also a developer and if my employer overcharged for my products I would fully expect my product to be copied and reproduced. Doesn't make it right, it's just common sense.
@Tony Clifton
$230k a year and you can't afford all the games you want? What the heck are you spending the money on? If you have kids, I understand.
@chilipalm yup, two kids, some debt, new home, new cars, directv, etc., etc.
is it just me..... seeing a xbox360 above a flat hd tv weird?
never thought someone would do that 0.o
hehe.
I don't know a huge amount about how Microsoft's install games on the 360 system works, but I do know that you can use a broken disk (broken enough not to play the game on it's own) to allow the 360 to play an installed game.
Would it be possible to extract the part of the disk that verifies that an installed game can be played, and write a whole load of them on to one "backup" disk?
I may be totally wrong, and I can see there would be lots of complications... just spit balling...
i know a lot of people that have two 360's specifically to have one for xbl and one for running copies.
picking up a second machine off ebay is well cheap.
This video isn't real... Notice when loading and unloading the game he doesn't leave the xbox dashboard on the game... he moves it over to where it is on his avatar. He does this because what you see on the screen is a different Xbox 360 than the one sitting on top of the tv. Nice try guys.
