Philips' Android-powered GoGear Connect PMP seemingly on sale overseas
We suppose it could always be a glitch of some sort, but Argos isn't typically the kind of retailer to add products to its library with no intention of hawking them. First spotted back in February (with a pleasing dose of steroids, might we add), Philips' newest GoGear Connect is ditching the proprietary OS in favor of Google's alternative, following Samsung's Yepp-YP-MB2 into the mysterious world of Android-based PMPs. The product listing shows the 3.2-inch media player as boasting Android 2.1, 16GB of internal storage space, a battery good for 5 hours of video playback (and 25 hours of audio), FM radio tuner, a touchpanel and a microSD expansion slot. Curiously enough, GPS is also thrown in, as are a set of presumably lackluster headphones. It's listed for a scarily inflated €264.99 ($340), but mum's the word on an international release -- 'course, it's not like Philips hasn't ignored North America before, so we'd recommend not holding your breath.

What's the point of it using android if it doesn't have access to the marketplace?
@Accelerator
where did you read it doesn't have access, i believe all 2.1 capable devices are given access, more importantly it doesn't state Wifi anywhere so you may have a point as side loading will probably be the only way.
but wheres source? what is this unclickable Michael
@Zylam
Google doesn't allow non-phone devices to acces the market.
@Accelerator I doubt that it doesn't have access to Marketplace. It was even at Google I/O this year.
@Accelerator you know if you go onto the website and look for it it does say it there it has Android 2.1 marketplace and a built in camera heres the link so you can check it out yourself. http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/9258279/c_1/1%7Ccategory_root%7CHome%2Bentertainment%2Band%2Bsat%2Bnav%7C14419512/c_2/3%7C14419512%7CMP3%2Band%2BMP4%2Bplayers%7C14419653/c_3/4%7Ccat_14419653%7CMP3%2Bplayers%7C14419654.htm
@Accelerator It's because they needed an excuse for not having gapless playback – Android can’t do gapless playback, perfect excuse.
@Zylam that's meee!!! muhuahahaaaa
@Geoponic
Don't lie fella
@Accelerator
what's the point of stupid FUD ?
It runs Android Apps.
Don't cry because you just bought a iPod Touch 4.
can't you just hear Philips go
Muahahahahahahhaahahahaha!!! Muaahahahhahahahhahahahah!!!
I never liked philips build quality, plus its way too expensive.
Anyway, does this have acess to the market?
@Scrubs
Looks like a solid piece of kit to me. Besides, my Philips gear has generally outlasted any Sammy or Sony stuff I have owned. Of course, service is pretty good here in Europe, not sure how that is for Philips devices in the US.
@Scrubs
It does have access to the market:

What we want is a universal docking system on the bottom of phones so we can connect to our hi-fi, TV, or car speakers. If apple can do it (look at the hundreds of ipod dock systems out there) then why DONT the rest of them club together or at least launch there own dock connections (& it could incorporate the new usb standard)
I Want a dock system But I dont want a ipod or iphone. aaaahhhhh
It's called a 3.5mm AUX port.
Why release a planned device with an outdated OS version? It's as if the hardware manufactures are still stuck in the outdated mindset that the hardware and software are two parts of the same product.
This could get very messy. Then again, perhaps their propriety apps don't run on Android 2.2 ...
@TheRealCJ Its called a 3.5 aux port, really, can you use it to connect to a hi-fi & use the remote control to control the songs/menu & charge the player & the same time.... I dont think so, I said DOCK system.......
@Newwales: There is micro-USB, which can transfer audio, regular data, controls and power.
Or micro-HDMI, which can transfer audio, data (HDMI 1.4) and remote control signals (HDMI-CEC) but I don't know if it has enough power (+5V, 50 mA) to recharge the phone.
But regular 3,5mm TRRRS can also transfer remote control signals.
It cannot recharge the phone however.
Nice. Philips is good company with phones doing what they do these days I dont see a need for this, ALL ipods, and all other portable music players. My goal is to be able to carry around 1 device that lets me do everything. The droid did it for me and now the Droid X is doing it. I personally dont have a need for something like this.
Here's the 16GB version... http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/9258279.htm
And there is also an 8GB variant coming out too, apparently...

@Douglasac

the same with the 16gb version, the cheap one has hdmi! whyyy!!??
@pabloda
ok, i noticed the cheap one has hdmi but no marketplace.. wtf?
@pabloda OH! now i see, the GoGear Muse is the one with hdmi and the GoGear Connect is the one with marketplace... damn that's stupid.

The Media Player on Android is its weakest part, you need Sony to put a fresh UI skin over it. I honestly think if sony attempted this, they could produce a real contender to the iPod Touch.
Didnt Phillips may a deal with Songbird about bundling the media players with their players
Teenage dreams in a teenage circus, running around like a clown on purpose. Who gives a damn about the family you come from? No giving up when you're young and you want some.
Gotta love Mika. Crazy guy.
Another suicide act by the now semi defunct European company...
lucky that they still get many of their income through light bulb patents...
@andyusa
Mate, there's more to Philips than lightbulbs. Medical devices? Home appliances? Health & Wellness? These bring in more dole than you think.
I'll be waiting for the YPMB2, its a competitor to the iPod touch meaning that they will most likely have the same price range. This 300 bucks for a sony android PMP? Get an Xperia 10, or just get any galaxy s phone. This product=overpriced.
And nary a mention of "Is this the iPod Touch Killer"... how refreshing!
Will we ever see an unskinned android pmp with marketplace access?
No Bluetooth? M I finally want a good non-iPod player with bluetooth!
@b0rndead
Who said there isn't Bluetooth?
Someone finally figure out how to put an equalizer on an Android media player software?
