Archos 28 Minidroid PMP surfaces at FCC: yet another Android-based PMP
First came the onslaught of Android-based phones, and then came the rush of Android-powered tablet PCs. Now, we can all brace for the third major coming of Google's mobile OS, as this PMP marks the second from Archos alone in the last week. Hot on the heels of the Archos 32 comes the Archos 28 Minidroid, a diminutive 2.8-inch (presumed, anyway) portable media player with inbuilt WiFi, Android onboard, a 3.5mm headphones jack, USB connectivity, an integrated microphone and a touch-sensitive array of front panel controls. Beyond that, the FCC's database ain't telling us much, but we suspect we'll hear more as IFA approaches.

@hamoor
Capacitative buttons? And the take up a third of the front??
FFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUU
@hamoor That's what Chromium's for.
@hamoor What junk. I have yet to see a decent Archos product. Yes they have some bizarre niche products, but almost all of them are lacking. This thing looks like a 4 year old LG Chocolate merged with one of the original iPods. Archos---what the fuck are you thinking?
@hamoor ill take a click wheel over capacitive buttons anyday
@hamoor
And people thought the Droid had a huge d pad
Web surfing on a glorious 320x240 screen! Retina Display, feast your eyes on this! Archos, sign me up!
...alternatively,
1080p in a breath-taking 2.8 inch of real estate! Tell me it does subtitles, too!
You get the drift.
@d00b
You're comparing an iPod nano competitor to an iPod Touch competitor... Got it.
@The Advanced Kind
I'm comparing it against its rumored specs: Cortex A8 capable of HD videos. But if you want to compare it against the Nano, then the Nano already has a larger display.
The only portables packing QVGA nowaday are low-end DAPs in dept stores selling for well under $100.
@d00b Your poor eyes! The strain!
@nicholas1987ucsb
dO^Ob
@d00b where did you get the specs from? the article doesn't mention anything.
BTW the Apple iPod nano 5th gen uses a WQVGA 2.2 inch screen
It only took them 3 years to catch on to Apple's idea!
@Synaesthesia You suck.
@Synaesthesia It's similar to an iPod nano, but it's touch screen, wireless capable, and runs Android 2.2. Oh, and $50 cheaper. They're not catching, they're taking the lead.
@You're high if you think people want some regurgitated design with outdated technology.
@mp3 Very nice but it's still 3 years after the original iPod touch. I expected this years ago. Can't wait for it to come to South Africa.
By the time it hits the market Apple will have updated the iPod range. So the manufacturers gotta get with it!
@mp3
cheaper doesn't doesn't mean anything if it doesn't work good
Why? There's still no Android competitor to the iPod Touch on the market. I would love to get one!
@Synaesthesia
The Creative Zii looked like an Android competitor to the iPod Touch. What ever happened to it?
Android will assimilate and you will join the collective!!!
Nice. Archos PMP's are always great.
@alexr58 I had one in 2005, it was shit. The worst possible build quality. ugliest OS. Basically torture to use.
@alexr58
LIAR!!!!!!!!!!!
@nicholas1987ucsb The Archos 5 (Android-based) is great :P
Junk like this will really help cheapen Google's brand.
This honestly does not look attractive in any way or form. The chances of me purchasing it is 0%.
Sorry.. What rush of Android tablets? I've been waiting for one and haven't seen (a good) one. Yea I've seen the latest Archos (and engadget's review) but let's face it there's no market place. And other than that the US android tablet market is non-existant. Also seen some things featured here on Engadget from overseas but that doesn't help me.
I want a nice Android tablet with Android Marketplace (and webcam) build in please!! I am missing something??
@photographicd I have the Android market installed on my Archos 5. A simple APK file does the trick.
I don't understand why someone would want this... My Droid already makes me glad I no longer have an iPod Touch. and at least the Touch looks like it is up to date with technology.. This looks alot like the video iPod 32G I had years ago...
@mcaldero
Well, you already have a Droid in the first place, why would you get something else?
If you're going to use "yet another" when it's only the second one, you've kind of run out of options for when there are many more. If you kept the hyperbole to a minimum, clarity would increase.
slap an RF radio and an antenna on this and call it a phone.
@GeneralThade
yes, please! :) single purpose devices are so 2007.
no one wants to carry around a bunch of clunky gadgets when there are so many nice do-it-all-phones out there these days
I love this..lol...This is not an competitor to the iPod touch,it's facing the nano,and at that it will be better,but will not win due to archos not knowing how to advertise.
BTW,the Archos 3.2,5, Samsung galaxy pmp,nope no iPod touch competitors.
I bet you guys this will be less than $100,and at that price,you can't complain.
The latest Archos pmps are real good,this lineup will probably be as good as the apple products. to think...apple needs an 5 inch iPhone 4 resolution ipod touch.
Irrelevancy, thy name is Archos.
Browsing will be horrible on this.
