Samsung's YP-MB2 Android PMP spotted again in the wild, inches ever closer to release
It ain't the first time this chef-d'oeuvre has been spotted in the wild, but it's the first time that we're confident in believing the YP-MB2 is legitimate. The smoke that leads to fire is getting harder to duck under, and for all intents and purposes, this here device is a Galaxy S sans cellular connectivity. We're told that a 4-inch Super AMOLED display, 1GHz processor, WiFi, Bluetooth, 3 megapixel camera and Android OS will be featured, and it sure feels like it'll be released first in South Korea. Apple may be planning a Fall event for the next big iPod announcement, but at least this go 'round some presumably worthwhile competition will be breathing down its neck. Now, if only we knew a price...

Does google support the market on non-phone devices yet? If not this won't stand a chance.
@Accelerator
Will it have front facing camera?
@Accelerator
Here are more shots of new MB2 player.
Basically, son of samsung exec took pic of this and posted on his blog.

@Accelerator I was wondering the same thing, from what I read they do not support anything that doesn't have a phone. I am sure that is about to change once Android tablets worth anything start to roll out. I was expecting that change to happen though once 3.0 is finalized, I could see Google having a tablet market just like the iPad has it's own market.
@applebyjl
Those pics look like the Euro version of the Galaxy S just with a white back.
@Accelerator
If the market does get on these (it has to at some point, right?), Samsung seems to be on a tear. Galaxy S being offered everywhere, tablet, PMP...what next? Google TV? They should just trash Bada and run with Android.
The Samsung, Anycall and Yepp logos all look terrible. They should reinvent them.
@Hydraulics
i think those Logos are only for Korea but it its not a phone why the Anycall logo? isnt that a carrier in korea.
Hey anyone with a Galaxy S, is the bezel that silver? all the ones i've seen are tinted black, could this one have steel?
I think Samsung are just gonna mimic every move of Apple with its Galaxy line, won't be surprised to see a Galaxy Book made of aluminum with back lite keyboard
anyway, Samsung's sick!
@Zylam
New products look so similar to each other...
because,,, few years ago, there were seperate teams for MP3 player and Cellphones...but they integrated those two teams...
@Hydraulics Android logo is quite crappy, too. Makes me think of totalitarian regimes and other sad stuff.
@Zylam The Euro models have a metal bezel as for coping the Iphone in the states it might look like copying but in other parts of the World it goes the other way around. Take the Iphone 4 it looks exactly like at lets 4 different models from LG that have come out in the last Year or so.
ENUFF with the new phones.......
@ChillyCat This isn't a phone, silly goose.
No GPS module? :(
@Rod Guess Samsung can't it to work right... I don't see what the advantage of a GPS module on a mp3 would be.
@blindguymcsqueezy
"I don't see what the advantage of a GPS module on a mp3 would be"
What would be the advantage of one in a phone?
@Tes With a phone you have a wireless data connection. It see no reason for GPS when you are stuck to a wifi network for your data connection. I guess it would be nice to use as a navigation tool but Google maps navigation wouldn't work because it needs a constant data connection.
@blindguymcsqueezy
Google maps? No thanks. You do not need a wireless data connection for GPS. My TomTom Go does perfectly well as does my Nokia E90 and E51 with Ovi Maps and TomTom software respectively - both without a SIM card installed. AGPS helps with your initial location but is not a necessity.
There are plenty of 3rd party GPS solutions that would work perfectly on this platform and it's exactly what i'm looking for in a PMP. The Galaxy S without the call capability would be a great device that would run the iPod Touch into the ground, although i'd prefer to have the option of having a data only SIM also.
@blindguymcsqueezy you don't need a consistent data connection for Google Navigation actually. You need a data conection (such as wifi) to load the initial route, but once Google Navigation loads the route the entire trip is cached. If you get off route you just need to follow yourself back to the route, obviously rerouting does not work.
@blindguymcsqueezy
Well, you could install CoPilot or something else and throw away your old dedicated unit.
@robfrawley which basically means you need a data connection to use Google Maps, Nokia Ovi Maps because the map is their you can zoom in zoom out changes course if you want so it requires absolutely no data connection which as GPS enable phones they are always the best.

New iPod is gonna kill ios4 with duel camera retina display and all those apps.
@BallastatuzX
Duel = fighting, dual = two.
Just sayin...
@Seraphim
you don't have a clue what you're talking about, fighting camera retina display and all those apps beats all
It's from Korean Elementary School boy...heehee
Yeah i'm not an Apple fanboy at all (I have a N1 and loved the Galaxy S), but I have to say that I'm really waiting for the Ipod touch 4G.
@Tchiort yeah I'd get an iPod 4 if its the same design as the iPhone4. I have a Galaxy S and it's great. To have an iPod touch and tap into the App Marketplace for iOS would be fantastic, with a little monetary outlay and since I already got the phone thing covered, it's the best of both worlds :)
just wait for the Creative Zii Egg.
@darok3k
That thing's becoming the Duke Nukem Forver of the PMP world.
I personally really, really hope this gets released in the States. It's a high powered PMP, which is exactly what I'm looking for. This or wait till the Zune HD comes out.
The blurry-cam returns....
To accelerator's point, if there's no Android Market, I don't see this going beyond blurry rumor pics.
@Ferris
Your lack of belief in these companies ability to release products that make little to no sense is troubling.
@Tes It sounds like you just complimented my view, though in a sincerely obfuscated way.
I love Android as my smartphone OS, but as an actual media player, I am unsure of how effective it will be without some really unique features: purchasing music over the air, syncing with everything under the sun, playing all internet radio as long as there's wifi, etc.
And this more or less seems like they're going with Android because it's cheap, not because it'll necessarily be effective. The fact that the interface looks functionally identical to a low-end Android phone... isn't that encouraging.
@The Albatross What are you talking about? That's TouchWiz 3.0 interface and it's used on the Galaxy S superphones. The iphone's interface is the cheap one.
@The Albatross Lets think here the Iphone requires you to download some Apps to give you basic functions(oh and don't forget a bumper to make a phone call)the Galaxy S just does it drag, drop, go about my business and it will play no need for a resource hog Itunes on my PC that will take forever to get my HD movie on it. As for streaming it does it to just enable plugins on the Galaxy S and you got all the web streaming you want no app required which the Iphone 4 can't do ever.
@The Albatross
Android may be cheap, but what other choice do you got? WinMo 6.5 is discontinued, WPhone7 isn't out yet and Symbian stays on Nokia phones, same for iOS.
Slap a mic on this thing and I'm sold.
Just give me the tablet...
This is nice, but the tablet is more worth the money.
Why 1ghz? 700 or 800 would've been good enough.
@sylent101
No it wouldn't
PSX4DROID
If this has the Market and sideloading, the iPod Touch doesn't stand a chance.
Looks like a iphone ............aint it?
I they add Data card support in this, plus the ability to make it tether; Put me in for 2.
Any release dates for the states?
'
@Tech Dude
Its scheduled to be announced to the world at the IFA 2010 on Sept 3-8 in Germany. Most likely it should take a couple of months after that for a US launch.
The PMP should be launched in South Korea before the IFA 2010 show.
@Tech Dude
My best guess is before the holiday shopping season begins to roll around.
Before November is my best guess.
@ConceptVBS
I thought it was coming in September so it could actively compete with the iPod Touch
As the owner of a 3gs, this will be an exciting new direction for android. This will allow me the freedom of android, and all it's joys, while also letting me keep my 3gs. With a little mywi, I'll be happy, happy, happy. No market though, and it's a failure like all the tablets out now.
@accelerator
you can see in the pic it has the market and they would probably never release something like this without the market cause noone would buy it I mean really they're samsung not archos.
