The Grand Challenge to become ever more grand

Since that first robotic road race from Barstow, California to Las Vegas known as the Grand Challenge was such a roaring success (see here), the Defense Advance Research Projects Agency (the government group which held the event)
has decided to double the prize money to $2 million.  We would love it if this results in there being an actual race next year. However entertaining the spectacle of a bunch of robotic vehicles exploding a few hundred feet after starting was, we were hoping for something more along the lines of the Cannonball Run).
