Simputer 2 - the Amida
We mentioned the earlier version here, and now it looks like the PDA for the poor has received an upgrade. The Amida can connect to the internet via modem or CDMA mobile phone, has a browser, handwriting recognition, and support for Hindi, Tamil, Chinese, and presumably many other languages. It also plays MP3s and comes with the usual PIM software (calendar, address book, etc.). Interestingly, it has a motion sensor on its flip top, which allows you to turn the pages of an e-book by flicking your wrist and similar tricks. With 64MB of RAM and a 206 MHz processor, it should be reasonably competitive in terms of performance,
and with a suggested battery life of eight hours it should last long enough to be useful.
