Nextel & Verizon play nice, end silly lawsuits
When Verizon wanted to get into the push-to-talk (PTT) market,
which Nextel currently dominates, they sued Nextel for stealing trade secrets and also tried to block a spectrum swap, while Nextel threatened to trademark the words "push-to-talk", "PTT", and "PUSH". Now each has dropped their respective lawsuits, so Nextel is moving forward with a switch to 1.9GHz band from 800MHz (which they sorely needed to get into the high-speed 3G game), while Verizon can use any of the PTT terms in their marketing (so expect to be annoyed by lots of ads for Verizon's push-to-talk feature very soon). Verizon did make Nextel pay a little something
(well, a lot something) for the spectrum, but what can you do?
