Next generation of pen-based interfaces emerging
The first generation of Tablet PCs, despite much fanfare, haven't generated the revolution in computing that some pundits predicted. Instead, the tablets became board room distractions and oversized PDAs, so IBM and Microsoft are developing new interfaces and wireless connectivity protocols to help bring Tablet PCs into their own. IBM's SHARK (Shorthand-Aided Rapid Keyboarding)
uses regularly-used letter and word combinations and an educational interface to teach users to enter text and words more quickly, displaying popular combinations in a hexagonal on-screen interface and using a Graffiti-like shorthand called "sokgraphs." Meanwhile, Microsoft's Stitchmaster software will allow multiple Tablet PC users in the same room to share files by simply flicking the files in one another's direction. We fear for the future on-site IT
guys who have to deal with this.
