Biohybrid limbs may aid amputees
Scientists at MIT and Brown University, funded with $7.2 million from the Department of Veterans Affairs, have begun work on "biohybrid" technology that they hope will allow amputees to control prosthetic limbs via their own central nervous system. The new limbs will rely on a combination of sensors, regenerated tissue and an implanted chip —
the aptly named BION — that will relay signals from the patient's nerves and relay them to the mechanical
"muscles."
