Hitachi, Mitsubishi develop long-life cellphone batteries
We know a few people who have perfected the art of keeping their cellphones perpetually charged; between the USB
charger in the office, the lighter port in the car, and the AC jack at home, their phones are rarely far from a source of juice. For the rest of us, Hitachi and Mitsubishi have come up with what may be the next best thing to a self-charging battery (and, no, we're not talking about that hand-crank thing Motorola tried a couple of years ago).
The two companies have announced that they've come up with technology — due out in 2007 — that should slash cellphone battery consumption by up to 90%, and allow phones to stay charged for weeks in standby mode. That should give us just enough time to figure out where we stashed the charging cradle before our phone dies on us.
