Automakers to develop WiFi on wheels

A group of automakers has won a grant from the German government to help develop a standard for car-to-car data networking. The planned standard will essentially create a mobile Internet, allowing vehicles and drivers to communicate with each other instantly. (There are already
ad hoc systems that allow sharing of data—especially music—on the road, but they don't have this level of industry backing.) While the automakers, who include big names Daimler Chrysler, BMW and Audi, envision the standard leading to a system for traffic, weather and other vital information to be distributed efficiently to drivers, we know what's really going on. This is going to be the ultimate system for inter-vehicle gaming and sending inflammatory IMs to the guy who just cut you off.
