26-firm consortium to brainstorm 3G 2.0
It's going to be called "Super 3G" (oh, come on people!) and NTT DoCoMo, Vodafone, Siemens, NEC, Alcatel,
China Mobile Communications Corp., and Cingular, among some 19 other companies, are going to develop a universal standard for 3G service, which they expect will be 10 times faster than current speeds (which, reaching to upwards of 2mbps now would mean 20mpbs+ connections—what, no gigabit wireless?) and ready for elease in 2009. Well hot diggity are we down with standards, especially ones that will once and for all unify mobile voice, video, and multimedia on a user-centric basis. Just be warned, if NTT DoCoMo's estimating service launch in 2009, don't expect America to see service until, what, 2014?
