RipGuard means the DVD copying party is over
CSS, the copy protection currently used in DVDs, has pretty much been a joke for years (thankfully, right?), but the party might be over, at least if Macrovision has anything to do about it. They've just announced RipGuard, a new content protection system that can supposedly prevent a DVD from being copied, but yet won't stop the disc from playing on current DVD players. It's a bold claim—a lot of people have had problems playing copy protected CDs—and even if only 0.1% of people experience a playback problem when they try to watch some new hit DVD they've just bought or rented,
that still equals thousands of pissed off people. Predictions on how long it takes until someone cracks this?
