TiVo breaks three million subscribers

We're updating the TiVo Deathwatch, but this time with a bit of positive news: TiVo just broke the three million subscriber mark. They added just under 700,000 new subscribers in their fourth fiscal quarter which ended on January 31st, but the catch is that most of those (about 447,000) were people who signed up through DirecTV. TiVo makes less money from DirecTV subscribers than they do off of customers who buy standalone TiVo boxes and either sign up for a lifetime subscription or pay a $12.95 monthly fee.
Given the current unraveling of their relationship with DirecTV
(their partnership expires in 2007 and DirecTV is rolling out their own DVR to compete with DirecTiVo), even with today's good news TiVo isn't out of the woods yet; if they want to stick around they better find a new source of subscribers right quick.
