Virgin Mobile Radio gets on your cellphone

Mobile bro Russell Beattie is buzzing over Virgin Mobile's new 3G wireless streaming radio service which lets you listen to music on your phone, anywhere in the world, for free. You do have to install Virgin's mobile radio app (which is only compatible with phones running on the Series 60 or Symbian UIQ operating systems), and it helps to have a flat rate data plan (all those KB can add up mighty quick), but you don't actually have to have a 3G-compatible cellphone,
as the service will work over a GPRS or EDGE connection. We're not quite ready to pronounce the death of satellite radio or anything dramatic like that, but Russ gets it right when he says that if the wireless carriers really want to convince people to pay scads more to upgrade to 3G, they could do a lot worse than to offer subscribers a cheap (or free), customizable streaming audio service.
