DMC's 8280 is no Wyclef, er Xclef
Digital Mind made some news last year with their Xclef 500, the first 100GB MP3 player. Their newest product, the DMC 8280, isn't likely to generate nearly as much buzz. The 8280's features include the standard FM receiver, voice recorder, MP3, WMA and OGG support, along with Outlook syncing and a couple of games. At $249 for a 20GB version, the company is boasting that the player is a bargain, and we suppose it is, compared to an iPod with similar storage capacity. However, in a market where you can pick up a 20GB Entempo Spirit for just $149 and a Rio Karma for just $50 more, competing on price is a constant race to the bottom. Our advice to Digital Mind: bug Toshiba to make you a 100GB
1.8-inch drive before anyone else, and then rush it out the door. Competing on size gave you some cred before; it should work again, for about two days until everyone else gets the drives.
