Ask Engadget: Best compact digital cameras?

It's Thursday evening, which means it's time for another installment of Ask Engadget. Last week Dan wanted some recommendations on good home backup solutions, this week reader Peter M. wants to know:

Any chance of an "Ask Engadget" on compact digital cameras? There's such a plethora of them available right now, I
was wondering which ones Engadget readers would recommend.

Any suggestions? We've been eyeing that new Nikon Coolpix S1 ourselves, even though we're supposed to be saving up for a digital SLR.
