What good are profiles if you can’t switch between them?

Yesterday, O'Reilly released Firefox Hacks:
Tips & Tools for Next-Generation Web Browsing
. It's written for "power users who want to maximize the effectiveness of Firefox" and offers "valuable tips and tools" on how to
"customize its deployment, appearance, features, and functionality." Sounds like a good read. But... does it explain how to use the Profile Manager to switch profiles on the fly or at launch after the
"Don't ask at startup" option gets clicked? Because all the hacking in the world won't make Firefox more useful to me today without being able to accomplish this one simple task.

A Profile Manager is a great feature for a browser to have. Safari, my browser of choice (this profiles thing is business, not pleasure), lacks a Profile Manager. That's a bummer. But if it had a Profile Manager, I am guessing it would allow me to actually manage profiles.

The Firefox Help menu was no help at all, as you can see above. According to
Mozilla's Firefox support page, all you have to do to start the Profile Manager in Mac OS X, is "hold down the Option key and double click the Firefox icon."  Really?
Does that work for anyone? Doesn't work for me in Firefox 1.0.2.  I could open the Profile Manager that's buried inside the Firefox application bundle each time, but that seems a bit silly and it really shouldn't be required.

Where's Scott Granneman when I need him?
