Time Warner Cable testing wireless service
Time Warner Cable has started testing their new cellphone service in Kansas City, MO. They're keeping everything on the downlow for now—a company spokesperson wouldn't even officially confirm that any trials are underway—but the scoop is that basically they're repackaging Sprint's wireless service. The phones and the service are exactly what you'd get from Sprint, only when the bill comes at the end of the month you cut Time Warner Cable a check instead. So why bother? The big idea here is to offer packages that bundle together cable TV, cable Internet, VoIP, and wireless services and offer them to subscribers at a price that would be less than signing up for each service individually. They see this as their way of holding on to subscribers in the face of stiffening competition from SBC and Verizon, who are already bundling together DSL, wireline, and wireless (it works the other way, too: SBC has been making a lot of noise about getting into IP TV lately). Anyone in Kansas City trying this out?
