Microsoft scaling back Palladium in Longhorn
Perhaps you're familiar with Microsoft's Next Generation Secure Computing Base (NGSCB, aka Palladium)—which, some critics panned by calling it at best an unreal invasion of privacy, and at worst the end of personal computing as we know it. Well, since 2002 it's undergone some serious revisions to file down those fangs, but word on the street is that the version of Palladium Microsoft's shipping with Longhorn won't feature anything much besides Secure Startup;
the rest of its more advanced compartmentalization features are going to be held off. If none of this means anything to you, don't worry, if anything it's only something that's probably going to bite us some time around 2009.
