Ericsson says that interactivity is the future of mobile TV
Ericsson thinks that we've missed the point when it comes to TV on cellphones. Christian Plenk, the head of mobile media at Ericsson's Global Competence Centre for Media and Brands ("Competence Centre"?), says that because users look at their cellphones as interactive devices, the future of mobile TV is going to be about interactivity, not passively watching repackaged programs on your phone. Sounds nice, but unfortunately in this instance "interactive" is simply a codeword for all the usual boring crap that's already associated with regular, non-mobile interactive TV, like being able to buy stuff or vote for things. So how is Ericsson going to make all this work on the (very) small screen? Here's their brilliant innovation: they're going to split things up and put the promotional/interactive part of the show, like where you click to buy or vote or whatever, on a different part of the screen from the actual video programming and in a format that's easier to read on a cellphone. That's all you've got?
