Dartmouth nears completion of campus network
College students have long taken broadband access for granted, and many have serious wireless access as well. Now Dartmouth, already known as a top WiFi campus, is on the verge of completing its ambitious network. The campus-wide net will include 24,000 wired ports and 1,400 wireless access points, and merges voice, data and cable TV. Professors are already serving up video lectures, and students can also catch up on any cable program from anywhere — including in their classrooms, as The New York Times points out.
"That sounds amazing, But I don't know how great it will be for my study habits," one freshman told the paper. Study habits? We assume students will find far more creative uses for their access than mere studying.
