Motorola's Ojo launches as $800 luxury item

We've been hearing about Motorola's Ojo videophone for so long that we had started to think that it was one of those perennial "coming soon" products (sort of like Moto's
iTunes phone). But the company has actually launched the Ojo, positioning it as an $800 early-adopter toy (you'll be able to order it from Hammacher Schlemmer). While the VoIP-powered phone — which boasts 30fps video on its 7-inch LCD — has been a hit at trade shows for a while (it wowed cable execs at NCTA last month — and last year), Moto and partner WorldGate are still courting broadband operators (hence the NCTA appearances). So, even if you're willing to hand over $800 for one (or,
more realistically, $1,600 for two, since you're going to need someone to call), you may have to provide your own access. Analysts expect the price to drop to around $200 as part of VoIP packages, once Moto signs some deals.
