VoIP could almost be a security risk, maybe
PCWorld today published a not-so-bone-chilling report asking if VoIP is the next big target for hackers. They highlight "potential" threats and "possible" dangers which "could" leave your Mothers Day Skype calls vulnerable to attacks. Don't know about you, but this type of Hacker Hysteria really fries our oysters (what does that mean!?) with so many milquetoastian CEOs unable to distinguish between technology threat and business risk. While security officers wrestled for years with WiFi security, employees continued to discuss mergers and aquisitions over Hotmail and leave laptops behind at the Friday afternoon happy hour.
Let's keep some perspective please, folks. Sure, denial of service is possible, but how many times have phones been taken down due to local construction cutting telco cables? And yeah, tapping over the internet is a possibility but as Vonage CTO Louis Mamakos rightly points out, anyone can walk up to a phone box with a pair of alligator clips and kindergarten education to tap a phone line. He also reminds us that "You need to balance what all the relative threats are." Louis, please consider a position with the Department of Homeland Security.
